Never use Oil-Based Polyurethane on your Floor! ❌ Spoiler: We were able to Save the Floors
Truman's Hardwood Floor Refinishing & Cleaning------
Today we’re having a look at work another contractor completed. As you can see in the video, the contractor left many marks all over the floor from poorly using the sander.
➡️ In addition to that, the previous contractor used an oil-based polyurethane which left an oily sheen on the floor that the customer does not like. Not to worry! This client did her research and made sure to call us to do the job properly.
For new homeowners, like the customer in this video, it's crucial to sort out the floors before you move in. This allows us to completely sand down the polyurethane layer, also known as screening. ➡️ Afterward, we’re able to apply whichever sheen top-coat of polyurethane the customer prefers. This can only be done properly when there is no furniture in the way!

Maybe it wasn't the greatest ever, but I don't think it was THAT bad.

I have glossy oil based polyurethane on my wood floors. Happy with my shiny floors! After 10+ years since last redone, the floors still look new. Easy to clean - whatever sticks to them, comes out easily. Easy maintenance! Yes, there are some chatter marks (as I sanded the floors myself) but the marks are not that noticeable. Among furniture, rugs, interior decor etc, no one notices these imperfections. If I had to redo the floor over again, I would again choose glossy oil based polyurethane.

@@brandonshaffer3940 I did. Water based isn't nearly as good. Pale in color, not water resistant. I am 100% for oil based.

Just the switch to satin from gloss would change it to more natural looking and make imperfections less noticeable. Floors look great!

Nice job. Satin will hide a lot of imperfections, that's for sure. I just finished my floors - in oil base - but also in satin. The house was built in 1955 and the floors have been hidden under carpets. They were pet stained and there were former attempts to re-finish, with disastrous results. Hence, the carpeting. It was a helluva lot of work, but they look great.

So what about all the wood trim you guys hit during the install? Does it get repainted and trimmed? Did they take off some molding first or are they adding some on afterwards? What about the poly that go lt on the baseboards?

What kind of water base do you use in a whole house? I thought that even water based poly is used that it can turn white when water drops get on them?

  • @kinaowens9235

If you apply water-based polyurethane over oil-based stain, it can form a white glaze, if the stain is not completely dry.

The homeowner should have made the previous guy refinish the floors or not pay. You can’t hide those chatter marks with a satin finish

nothing wrong with oil based poly. Its just opinions and they probably used gloss which makes it super shiny, which im not a fan of but some people do. The workers shouldve asked what the home owners wanted in terms of shine. Those chatter marks are horrible though, some beginner problems.
