People tend to look back at history and think everybody was just these creatures with vague sense of conscious. When in reality they were no real different to us emotionally and intelligence wise

Murex purple and wine red were only available to royalty but there were other lighter purples and mauves that were generally available.

Poor people of course colored their cloth, but only with some natural dyes (like flowers or grass or tree bark) but those was giving a little range of colors. Combining color is only for rich...

You can achieve a surprising amount of color variation with just common natural dyes.
