I’ve been riding snowboard since I was 14 years old and I am now 55. I Purchased my first never summer I believe in1997 or 1998 and I’ve never purchased anything but never summer . Just bought another harpoon 2024.

You have some of the best reviews on the internet. I’ve been riding for two decades and appreciate hearing from people who know what they are talking about. I’ve been riding Neversummer boards for the last 10 years or so and love them. Thanks for the review. Keep ‘em coming. Watching from Colorado and dreaming of pow.

Awesome review man! I love neversummer boards and rode the proto, proto type two, shaper twin, proto synthesis and funslinger. Want go get to ride the Harpoon, Proto Ultra and Proto Fr this year. For now, the most fun board of the lineup (for me) is the shaper twin which has nearly the same profile as the harpoon - fusion rocker/camber whoich I really love ! The Harpoon - with a litte tighter sidecut could be a hell of a ride !!

Thanks! Yeah the Harpoon does just seem like a more extreme/exaggerated Shaper Twin, though that definitely isn't a bad thing. I have a review of the Proto Ultra that I should have done soon, but it felt so close to the Proto Synthesis that I would try and get on the Harpoon first.

I just picked up this board based on your review and a few others. Really excited!

Good review brotha. Agree with everything you said. I have this board and it turns easily on a dime. Very fun, but I prefer camber and decided to buy a dancehaul.

Man, I’m similar spec to you but 5 10”, and I was debating between a 152 and a 156. Glad I watched this. I’ll most definitely go 156.

This video helped convince me to buy a Harpoon, I absolutely love the board!

Nice review, makes me want to try it! Had a NS Revolver ages ago, and although I had too much weight so it could not handle my carves... their version of rocker made for a very fun and forgiving ride. Construction was great as well, nicely fluid and damp but not poppy enough for my personal taste. I think NS gets too much flak.

Thanks! I haven't edited it yet, but the Swift is a solid notch up from the Harpoon, a bit more serious but still with that NS feel you would be used to.

Got in my first day for the season, just yesterday at Keystone. Brought with me my new K2 Manifest Team. Although a great board, it was too serious and aggressive for me. This board is meant for serious hard charging and carving at all times. Seems the faster I rode it, the better it got. Which I like to hard charge sometimes but not 100% of the time. So………I just ordered the Harpoon in a 159 length for my everyday all mountain driver. Can’t wait for my next day up.

@@SnowboardRobot just picked up my Harpoon tonight! My guy at the local shop is so awesome. He put the bindings on, made sure the boots fit to the bindings perfect, made adjustments and threw a new wax on the board. Taking it up to Breckenridge this Tuesday!

Hi! Nice review👍Looking for a new board. I am 93-95 kg, us size 10. Currently own a 165 furberg freeride and a Rome Pow division 154 Mt. I used to love my Furberg for open bowls of powder and freeriding stuff. With a 18m sidecut its super stable at high speeds and eats up everything thats coming. These days with kids there are more slow days at the resort just cruising around. The furberg is really boring riding like that. Pretty dead board that dont like to turn. Been using the Rome board lately and its pretty fun, but feel like i need some more tail when playing around. Trying to improve my jumping. Also has some nose chatter when going fast. But really good when its a powder day or good groomers. I think the fusion rocker would suit me and have been looking at the harpoon and westbound. Think they will be a good option and what size do you recommend? Currently can get a deal on harpoon 56 or 59. Ps. If I am getting a new board maybe the Furberg freeride will have to go. So a plus if my new board could work ok for some open powder bowls aswell.

Last season I kept them on the Mercury most of the time, as they were way more convenient for riding in the park and hiking features, it is just when I rode new boards to test out I tried to always keep the same Highlander bindings and my regular boots. I still have the Step Ons, I might leave them on my Korua board this season.

Appreciate your reviews. As an intermediate rider looking to upgrade his board I’m torn between the Harpoon and the Jones Frontier. I’m mainly looking to cruise the groomers and want the most stable, easy to maneuver board that will grip the best in harder, icy snow. Which would you suggest?

The Harpoon will do all that you need - good grip with minimal effort, very comfy and easy to cruise. With reverse camber between your feet it will take some getting used to get make it feel stable. The Frontier with camber between the feet is more stable straight away, and doesn't need a lot of work if you are just cruising around (because of the spooned nose and tail), but if you do want to push it faster or for more agressive riding it would be the better long term choice.

Great video! Have you tried the Shaper? I love the poppy playfulness of my NS Proto HD X. I'm looking to add a powder board to the quiver. Got it narrowed down to the Harpoon and Shaper. Thoughts?

Hmm I haven't ridden the Shaper yet, but from the specs I imagine that the Harpoon would be better in powder, with more taper and a more directional shape.

The Shaper has the blower stance on it. An extra set of inserts allowing you to shift your bindings all the way back for those deep days. What did you end up getting?

Overall did you prefer this to the Salomon Dancehaul? Of the two, which is softer flexing?

That's hard, I don't think I could pick easily. The flex is roughly the same, though the feeling and effort needed to flex them is quite different with the opposite profiles. The Dancehaul flexes easily but snaps back nicely, while the Harpoon takes a bit more effort to flex, and doesn't push back as hard, even though they are "rated" roughly the same. Even though I don't own the Harpoon, I think I would choose it if I needed one board that would ride everything fine if I wasn't sure on what sort of terrain or conditions I would be riding on.

I have been looking into a lot of boards recently and like a lot of what I hear about NS. I’m an intermediate rider in my late 40s, 6’2”, 220lbs, size 12 boots. Mostly like to carve and do small side hits. I live in the midwest so mostly ride shorter groomed trails but take an annual trip out west in the US. Which of the NS boards would you recommend for my scenario? Thanks, love your reviews.

Thanks so much! The Harpoon would be a good option, the 159 will work well with your boots, and is a good mix for carving and float in deeper snow, but will have a more playful flex for your weight. The other option would be the Proto Synthesis, which is a bit stiffer. It would be great for local riding, though it is a twin so if you do get some softer conditions out west you would want to set it right back. For that one you would want to look at one of the X wide boards, or if you really want to get into crazy deep carving there is also the super wide DF, but that will make regular turns take a lot more effort.

Cool! Thanks for the reply. One more follow up. I was definitely looking at the PS also, but have been leaning toward a more directional board. Do you have any feedback on the PROTO FR? I know it’s more stiff, but thought with riding mostly harder pack and with my weight it may be a good option vs the PS.

@@oldmansnowboardleague5627 It looks good, each time they add more camber I like the boards more, but I haven't been able to actually ride it yet. Being a bit stiffer would be good, though the PS is far from soft.

Looking at this and the dancehaul. Can you recommend the one with better edge hold/carving? Thanks for your time

The edge hold on the Harpoon does feel stronger to me than the Dancehaul, and does want to carve as well. The thing that makes them hard to compare is that they have opposite profiles (harpoon with rocker between the feet and Dancehaul with camber). It's a really different ride, which is all personal preference. Both are fun just to carve on, but the Dancehaul will feel more lively and poppy with the camber.

Thanks for the review. I just picked up a 2023 in 156. They say to size down a bit but your video convinced me to keep mine as is (I normally ride a Proto in a 155) as I've been feeling I need a longer board for my weight. Do you think it'll be an issue?

Nah you will be fine, this one I almost sized up, so there won't be any issues if you kept it at your regular length.

I imagine quite well. Long rockered nose, setback stance and a short tail should be really good, especially if you are riding in almost bottomless powder. If I owned both though, I would think that the Swift would be better - same overall features, but a shorter stiffer swallowtail.

Really trying to decide between the NS Ripper, Proto or Harpoon. Just wish I had money for everything

I haven't ridden the Ripper, but from riding other boards with that profile it would narrow it down to the Proto or Harpoon. Harpoon is really fun, but the Proto if you want something stiffer/more serious.

Man, I'm so torn on the length for the Harpoon. I have a Westbound in 153 and I'm realizing (after 15 years of serious 30+ days a season riding here in CO) that my boards are too long for me at 5'5". I asked NS what the predecessor to the Westbound is and they said Harpoon. I got all set to buy the 148 and then I saw the comment about volume shifted and size down 3-6cm, so I can't tell if that just means it'll be the same as the 153 I have now! I got a sweet 148 swallow tail Weston for powder, and it confirmed the shorter length really is better for me, especially in the trees. Tough being a short dude.

I think you would be pretty safe on the 148, I did it the wrong way by riding a big one and it was still fun, so that should be a good change from what you are used to.

I'm 5'4" 165lbs Sz 8 boot and have the same problems sizing boards. I ride anywhere 148-156 depending on the board. I think we could both ride 148-153 in the Harpoon depending on if you wanted an all Mtn board (148) vs a powder board (153).

Dear Robot, many thanks for the great review. I want to take full advantage of the volume shift concept and consider a 152. I’m 180cm/81kg/43EU. Would the 152 be too small?

Thanks! No you can still ride the 152, it is just going to feel easy to move around and quite playful. If you go bigger, it will have a slightly more stable overall feeling.

Thanks! The Harpoon turns way nicer, has better edge hold and does float better in deep snow. The Mercury is a much more regular board, but with camber between your feet has much much more pop, and a different kind of stability. It is hard to compare the two, because I think that a lot of the good things of the Harpoon are helped with the taper, setback and directional shape, while the Mercury is pretty much a twin.

Do you like the Harpoon better than the Swift? I recently rode the swift 157 and loved it. It was easy to get edge to edge in tight spots and ride super fast and stable. I am looking to purchase my first board at an intermediate level. I like to go fast and carve while getting into powder where I can. I live on the east coast and only get one to two weeks in a year. I don’t do much terrain park. Interested in your opinion. Thanks for your reviews.

Thanks! I didn't mind the Swift, but I found it to be a bit more serious of a board compared to the Harpoon. Seeing that you have already ridden and liked the Swift I would stick to that. If you did try the Harpoon it has a similar overall feel, but with a bit of a softer flex, though more playful and forgiving overall. It does sound like the Swift is the better fit for your riding.

@@1DesertPirate I got the swift. Bought the 21/22 model on Never Summer website and got a deal as it was end of year. Haven't ridden mine yet but I know what it rides like. Stoked to be on it soon. Can keep you posted, but I demo'd one enough to know it rips... just looking to get into more pow this season.

It's a really fun board, the board and bindings together would be about $950 or so, not a cheap first setup though.

Nah the only Yes board i have yet to edit is the Jackpot - I'll see if I can ride a Hybrid this season

Since last season I have been pretty much riding all directional boards with positive positive angles. Everything seems better, much easier to hold a good edge on both toe and heel, quicker and smoother edge to edge, and it just feels better on my knees. I started at fairly low angles something like +18 +3, and slowly went higher as I got used to them. Definitely worth a try, I like it especially in deep snow and firm groomers.

I’m between intermediate/expert, 5’8, 145lbs, and wear size 8 boot (Ride Insano) and I purchased the 152cm. Based on the details provided, do you recommend I stick with 152cm or go with 148 for this board? Thanks!

Hmm, it is a lot more fun, so yeah I think I do. I still like the TF for more serious steeper alpine riding, but overall the Harpoon is way more fun.
