That was my first thought. The theory is sound but Adam has really laboured the point that you can't clean and lube. This isn't quite the same. The deep dive is going to be interesting. I also believe there's no such thing as a free lunch so there has to be a downside to this method. It might just be the cost, it might be a slight reduction in durability, I don't know. But I'd like to know the downside as well.

If there are con artists out there it's more people like Muc Off with their wrng claims and fancy packaging/marketing but bad products based on nothing. Do you call Ferrari con artists too? It's a car that will get you from spot A to spot B like thousands of others for a much higher price. The difference is in the design, performances and targeted audience. Are you really that blind?

For the last 5-6 years I have been using a battery induction heater to heat the chain on my bike, and the whole equipment fits in a box of shoe and I can wax the chain anywhere, I even made a video and there are no comments, people are stupid

My first experience with wax chain lube was a total fail. In just year my chain was stretched beyond my measuring tool's range. Thanks to your channel, now I know why. Wax lube is useless on a factory oiled chain. A few days ago I installed your pre-waxed chain. Wow. My drivetrain has never been this quiet. I'm a true believer.

Josh never ceases to amaze me with constant improvements. I'm going to assume there was a ton of investigation, trial and error. The little waxing pot is genius. I've been looking at wax pots they sell to beauty clinics but never been convinced they would be right. This one is.

Thanks Josh, I have used the system on two new Campy chains already with great of ease. I will say thought that both times at 125c there is some "burping" going on with one time blowing off the plastic cover top of the heater. So make sure you have a large enough piece of cardboard underneath for the burping wax to splash on to. A++ thank you.

This is a fantastic product for bike shops - save 30 minutes in an ultrasonic cleaner and a fair bit of faffing with wax.

I have an ultrasonic cleaner and cleaning solutions, a Crock-Pot for your great Hot Melt Wax, your Chain Stripper (so I’m pretty well covered😊) and yet I’ve just ordered both these new items. Absolutely don’t need them, but absolutely want them!!!😊😊 Thank you and keep up the great work.

Actually, it could save some lives. Thanks to that Aussie nutjob, people are playing with gasoline in their shops & garages. Degreasing your chain with gasoline is about the dumbest thing you can do. There are so many other better alternative solvents out there that aren't as toxic or explosive. Mineral spirits and alcohol are a few. And even those still pose a fire risk. Citrus degreaser is the winner safety-wise. So completely eliminating the need for a bunch of solvents in the shop is a really good thing. That said, I'm gonna go through the degreasing procedure with my immersion wax chains for a bit. Might give this a try later to compare.

What is the reapplication? Is a new chip required each time I am treating a new chain? What if I am not treating a new chain, but doing a re-wax on an existing chain, is there a benefit to using this or a reason to not use it? Given the longevity of chains treated with Hot Melt (and I use Super Secret as an in-between treatment), if I am rotating between two chains, I can get two chains to last multiple riding seasons.

Exciting innovation in wax chains for sure. There are many questions about its practical use for us so I think a fact sheet covering many of the questions posted here would be a huge help. Dealing with rewaxing, multiple chains, how may chips to use, etc.

Another brilliant "you don't need this but want this" pairing and I did just order them. Yes, I'm replacing the $20 croc pot that's served me for years with the $99 cooker that has much more elegant hanger design. I'll try the chip cleaner too, but given how easy their cleaner solvent is to use, at half the cost, that's probably my go-to solution.

I’ll get the pot because it’s more precise than my crock pot and the hanger is cleaner than what I DIY’d. But I’ll keep with the US cleaner cause I know it comes out spotless and use my existing crockpot for first wax on dirty chains that have been cleaned with boiling water. New pot for final wax.

Just received my kit today, looking forward to waxing up my SL8 chain.

I already strip the chains and have a good setup going that will last for years. I mainly wax to not have dirty black oil on my drivetrain. Second reason is the longevity of the parts and the, third reason is environmental. Not having to use the solvents seems to be a more ecological approach. I'll certainly give it a go at some point.

Wax culters love to cite environmental issues but never much mention the solvents involved in getting that perfectly good (as Josh notes here, the only bad thing seems to be the dirt it attracts) grease off the chain so the waxing can begin and where that substance ends up. At least this latest offering to the god o' wax would eliminate that step and the bad by-products or did I mess something?

For those of you who don't know what "PID control" means; PID stands for Proportional Integral Derivative. It's a type of controller that allows for continuous modulated control of a system. In this case, temperature. A regular thermostat would sense a temperature, then shut the off cooling or heating system. Actual temperature will always overshoot the set value, and then fall (or rise) until the system is switched on again. This means the temperature is never constant. A PID control smooths this out and can apply minute adjustments in order to keep the temperature constant. These controllers are widely used in industrial application. For example, where a constant speed of a conveyor belt is required, regardless of load. In our testing adding ultrasonic maybe saves 5 minutes from the soak and agitation part of the process, but adds over $100 to the cost of the wax melter, and the end performance is no different or better in testing, so we chose to try and get it to a price that was attainable for the most people possible!

Just purchased the whole kit, hope it's better than the instapot. My 4 questions are - 1. will the smaller 600 ml capacity get contaminated faster than a whole bag of Secret chain wax in my instapot and require more wax changeouts? 2. the Strip chip bag I bought is only for new chains right with factory lube, what about chains that just have been previously used with bottled lubricants, and not converted via the immersion in chain stripper solvent ? 3. is the strip chip all in one? do you guys use strip chip for initial clean and lube then go to normal waxing with super secret hot melt applications? 4. can I buy an additional 600ml stainless tub for my new Silical melter to keep the wax separate ?

Strip chip chain stripping works very much like soap makers through "soaponification" with lye. I've begun using this recently but with commercial cleaner. Bravo

I’m a huge fan of the Secret Chain blend and it’s on all my gravel bike and mountain bike chains. Because of this, I seldom buy new chains. So it’s just a matter of cleaning (de-waxing) chains and re-waxing. The only time I have to strip chains with Silca chain stripper is when I convert one of my friend’s chains or I’ve got a new chain. I like the temp control crock pot with chain stand and probably get that since I was just boiling the bag in a regular pot. My Secret Chain Blend bag has lasted for many years of re-boiling.

My only thought on the topic is that perhaps go into negotiations with bike companies to have them manufacture & distribute by contract their chains with your special Silca ‘factory wax’ product which you could maybe develop instead of the greasy chain wax we all hate if that is technically possible in consideration to metal oxidation & time? I leave it you your expertise. But would love to know if that could be a possibility?..you may remember, I wrote to you recently last year about my ideas, you kindly replied explaining a patent pending is what you need before proceeding which is in the pipeline for the hot wax innovation I’ve been using for two years, and nobody else seems to have considered it as far as I know, but I will find out before too long and get back to you what ever the answer to air the concept. .?:-). These products together make the process of switching to wax so much more of a turnkey solution. In fact, a ‘chain wax toolbox’ all in one kit wouldn’t be a bad idea. A lot of cyclists I meet are interested in going to waxed chains but they’re all “Yea, nah” when I get into the chain stripping process. This is dead simple: Oiled chain? Use a chip and the high temp process. The average parent can do this for their bike and the kids park bikes.

Can one order additional pans/liners for new waxing system so we can use different waxes with the same heating element. I have the secret blend for everyday use and the silca x for race day chains. Would be great to not need 2 complete systems.

Sorry, there are no liners in this system. This was done to give the absolute most accurate temperature measurement and control as that is super important with the StripChip reaction.

Josh greatest skill is his ability to formulate ideas and bring them to reality.

Just wanted say thank you so much for pushing the innovation in this niche but relatable topic of chain lubrication. I am currently using the drip wax although not very successful because I think I did not do the stripping correctly, but with this 1-step wax it may very well push me to do "real" chain waxing! Cheers.

4:18 yes that's exactly what I'm doing, the hardness of the wax must be in accordance with the outside temperature. The goal is to keep the wax in the chain as long as possible. Hard-summer wax cannot be used in winter because it crumbles, and winter wax cannot be used in summer because it becomes wet and sticky.

Hi Josh, Another amazing product from Silca. Gotta LOVE chemistry. OK, questions 1. after strip and wax a chain using 1 chip, can the remaining wax be used to re-wax previously waxed chains, just like the regular Silca wax process? 2. Is the correct usage to use 1 new chip added to wax for each factory greased chain that will be stripped and hot waxed?

Our official stance is that 500gm of wax can handle 6 factory chains and 6 strip chip pieces (one whole package of StripChip). In total, one bag of wax and one StripChip pack will be good for 70-80 total waxings including the 6 strippings. We've seen no degradation in performance at any of these ratios of StripChip to base wax, but also know that there has to be a tipping point. The oleogelation converts the grease to a very long chain fatty acid that's very much like wax, but isn't wax, so we've put that limit there as at some point, performance will suffer.

@@SILCAVelolove the look of these products. If you still drop a new chain into mineral spirits before using the wax and a strip chip, will this have any negative effect on either product? Wondering if this might be a way to extend the longevity of the wax by minimising some of the pressure on the strip chip to handle to factory grease on a new chain.

@silcavelo I normally use Super Secret wax and apply using the bag sous vide style in an instant pot. This can get the wax up to 95C or thereabouts but no higher. I just tried the strip chip on a new chain using this method. Will it work? Or will it just remove the factory grease effectively but not gelify properly at a lower temperature than 125C? Or neither? Thanks. Great product!

You really need the 125C to fully get the grease to wax conversion.. it might still work somewhat at 95C, especially if you leave it in for longer, but in our testing the results were just not as good or as consistent at lower temperatures.

Can I use the Stripchip to bring back the wax that may have contaminated my crockpot full of wax from the previous chain that may not have been completely de-greased? The rationale is that using Stripchip is cheaper than getting rid of the existing wax that I'm using.

Strip chip is good for 6 chains, as I see it a tablet is added to the wax, firstly at strip chip needs 125 degrees, does this temp have a detrimental affect on the wax that needs an ideal temp of 70 degrees? Also with the 6 chain use of strip chip, is it a case of just add another block to the wax after 6 chains or does the wax then need to be replaced? Cheers in advance

The base wax doesn't begin to damage until around 150C, which is the 'High' temp on most crockpots, so be very careful. The ideal reaction temperature for StripChip is 120-130C and as long as you're in that range, you will get the reaction to convert the oil, AND won't be doing any damage. We are saying no more than 6 chain strippings per 500gm bag of wax. We've seen no degradation in performance at that level, but there has to be some tipping point where having the percentage of StripChip and oleogelated oil will have an effect. In total you should expect 70-80 waxings per bag of wax+StripChip

1. Do you still have to dip a chain in boiling water in between waxes? 2. 1 chip per bag? Or dip? 3. Does the machine beep or notify you when it is at temperature?

Seems like a great value for bike shops that will save time, eliminate process steps, errors, etc. As a home user with an ultrasonic cleaner, I only need to strip the factory grease on a new chain once a season at most. For me, the biggest hassle is constantly cleaning the chain before re-waxing it to remove the dirt that otherwise contaminates the clean wax. Boiling the chain in water still doesn't get all the dirt out and the process is a real stove top hassle . When we used to use white teflon powder as the main additive back in the day, you could easily see the black contamination building up on the bottom of the wax pot. Would Strip Chip help isolate this type of contamination and eliminate the need to boil the chain before rewaxing?

@@TheSpaceBrosShow I start with Mineral Spirits in a glass bottle in the ultrasonic filled with 160 degree water. When the grease is out, I switch to water soluble degreaser, and then an acetone bath in another glass bottle to finish.

Got few questions: 1. After some time of usage chain will accumulate some dirt anyway. How you advise to clean it? 2. Some dirt anyway will drop in wax during rewaxing. So any advice how to maintain wax inside waxing system to be clean?

For general maintenance, Silca recommends wiping the chain with a microfiber until debris is removed, then rewax. If you want to completely strip it again, their recommendation is to boil water in a kettle and pour it on the chain as you pedal. Let it cool, dry until damp, and then rewax as usual.

I’m an MTBer but a total cycling and science dork, and that new wax additive is hella cool!

There's a ton of good question and answers here. I had already heard of oleogelation in relation to food science. When I heard oleogelation on a video related to chain waxing I had to hit rewind to make sure I heard correctly. Great job coming out with two promising new products. I had decided to start waxing my chain, but was leery about using a crock pot. Looking forward to purchasing these products.

Sorry to be against the flow, but I have just calculated initial investments of ~€250 and it’s like 6 Dura-Ace chains, so I believe ROI of this project may be 10 years or so. Plus it takes way longer to maintain compared to any dry lube which can be cleaned in about 5 min or so without taking the chain off the bike. So it’s rather for enthusiasts, not a deal breaker.

If you take the following into the equation: also chain rings and rear cassette suffer far less, a regular Ultegra cassette is at about 60-70 EUR and it'll last twice as long with a chain that does practically not wear (I've seen waxed chains with 14000 km that were less than 1 mm longer than a new one...). Then depending on how you clean your chain using dry-lube (and how often) you also save costs on de-greaser or chain cleaner and drive train cleaner. And the entire bike stays cleaner. I would also not have a problem waxing other people's chains if they spend me a beer (so I can save costs for beer ;-) ... you see the ROI can be much faster. And saving the environment two additional worn down chains and one additional worn down cassette for half a pot pot of wax is a good deal as well.

Ultrasonic was mentioned as a important part of process in the past. Any color on why with this silca heating machine is no longer needed? Thank you

Awesome! Cleaning the factory chain was so annoying. So do i just put the strip chip in the wax bath and can clean as many new chains until the wax runs out?

A solvent does not break molecules down to be shorter molecules. that is called cracking and is typically done at 600+ Celsius and with a catalyst. A solvent dissolves the molecules, it won't change them.

A few questions for me. First, does it apply to those chains which has just been commonly used in daily riding and has not yet cleaned? Or it only applys to those brand new chains with only factory grease in them? Secondly, when I re-wax these chains, should I add a new bar or just use the former melted wax, or should I melt a new pot of wax? Thank you.

Phenomenal products. Just ordered the Chain Waxing System due to OCD on temp measurement and impatience with current crock pot heat up time. Question 1: How long should chain sit in the pot at 75*C for standard waxing? Previously, you suggested "cooling" the wax before taking out. Has anything changed in the recommended process? Question 2: Is it okay to heat and transfer wax from crock pot to Silca pot or would you recommend starting with new pot of Secret Chain Blend? Previous wax has been used on 10 - 15 chains and refreshed with SCB when needed. Thx!

That is probably fine.. additional strip chip in the wax is non-harmful, but there are hardeners in there to harden the oleogelated oil that may make the wax a bit stiffer than you want if there isn't sufficient oil in the solution to bind it up.

Hello Josh, I am using your wax, stripper and melting system. I use it at 75 degrees Celsius. When I take out the chain it is not as stiff as you show it. Before I used a slowcooker and waited for a starting film over the wax. Back then the chain became as stiff as you showed. Is it a problem that the chain doesn t get as stiff as you showed? Regards

I have recently decided to set my summer and turbo trainer bikes up with wax when I replace the chains. Only yesterday did my very first order of the chain stripper and super secret wax get delivered! And now it changes.

In the specs it says us plug, but does not say if it takes 110/220… any chance we can know?? Don’t mind the plug, just want the 220v!

You only need it to bind up and convert the factory lube. Chains that have been used, particularly with other oils should be stripped traditionally and then waxed normally.

@@susannawbary5540 no, but you should strip it or use the chip. Otherwise the wax will not coat the metal properly and the remaining lube will attract dirt, making the wax moot. @Scanlonc3, it depends on the chain and its condition. 100 miles is nothing, so if the chain shows no wear, it's absolutely worth stripping and going with immersion wax. Any $50+ chain would be worth it. Heck, even a cheaper chain because it's going to last longer, thereby delaying the purchase of that $50+ chain, right?

Can i wash off this "wax like" converted grease with boiling water just like regular wax?

How often do you need to add a square? 1, 2, 10 chains. How does it affect the longevity of the wax, knowing that not all waxes are created equal, would this not change the compound with added solvent based wax?

Watching this video after hearing the news from the GCN Tech show.

I read a reply from you further down the comment section that this product is *_ONLY_* for chains straight out of the wrapper with factory grease. Then this product makes no sense at all because that is 1 of all the times you will be doing something with your chain until it is time to scrap it. That's why it only makes sense to just strip it like normal, as well as not having to buy another product that is complete waste of money because it does only have a one time use.

No, read what we're saying, you add this to the normal wax if you want to strip the chain.. it converts the factory grease into wax, and then you just keep using the wax as normal for the rest of it's life.

@@SILCAVelo You're saying the same I'm saying just with other words, so read what I'm saying right back at you. You will have to strip the chain when it get contaminated which will be lots of times during the lifespan of a chain, so this product will *_ONLY_* free you from stripping it one of all those times. That's why I see no sense in getting this product because you need to have something to strip chains with anyhow, and what's one extra chain strip going to cost you of agony during an entire lifespan of a chain.

A very minor nitpick, and I only raise it because I've seen at least 2 influencer videos where this has happened in the last 2 days: When you've got the chain on the coupler, and you lower it into the wax, the coupler often falls into the wax, meaning you have to find another tool to fish it out, and it's covered in wax, etc, etc. A hook lower down to hang the couple on, whilst still allowing the chain to be submerged, would literally tick all the boxes.

now if we can just get waxed chains to work in extended rainy conditions - I'm already using waxed chains but seasonally dependent in the UK - once its raining everyday i'm back on Smoove.

Very interesting! I have been using your Super Secret on multiple fat, adventure, and MTB ‘s (TT bike too). I have been thrilled with the performance and the cleanliness in the dirt. These new products (especially the dedicated melting pot) might finally get me to go all in on immersion wax.

Never tried chain waxing, but this looks very promising! Is it possible to sous-vide in the bag with the StripChip as well? Sounds like it's hitting the right temperature that's the tricky part, without the "tower pot".

Hi Josh, great video and love the chip strip. The whole system looks pretty much the same as the one that Cyclowax released a year or so ago. Can you tell me more about the difference of the two heaters? Or did Silca just want their own Cyclowax heater? ;-)

Cyclowax heater is made by same vendor as ours, but they have 400ml capacity and standard thermostatic temp control. We designed a custom, larger capacity liner (600ml) with thicker walls for more even heating and a custom 360 degree heater (also for even heating) and finally we upgrade to a PID control for +/-1 degree temp control to eliminate the risk of overtemp heating as with StripChip we are pushing heats much higher than normal. Theirs works well, ours is just tuned more for our temperature needs, and the added 1cm of diameter and depth makes getting the chain in and out much easier.

@@SILCAVelo I use the cyclowax setup and there is some faffing every waxing just to get the full chain submerged since the diameter of their pot is on the smallish side. Good call Silca!

Big difference is that the Cyclowax pot only goes to 95C, but the StripChips require 125C temperature.

@@andreasolsson2336 Exactly this! Also using the Cyclowax setup and it's super nice and handy but the pot is just a wee bit too narrow, would love to have it a bit wider/deeper.

Can StripChip be used to restore contaminated wax? You mention that putting a new chain into wax without stripping the oil, robs the wax of 15% of it's efficiency. Will putting a square restore that efficiency? Or is wax that has been exposed to oil permanently ruined? Thanks for your innovations!

My first question: what does the StripChip taste like?

Maybe just me but not a fan of the red backboard on the new wax pot. Would prefer a match to the pot. Why go red? Too funky for 'old school' me.

Probably the least important question, but does the Strip Chip work with any wax in general (like Molten Speed Wax for example), or is it dependable on the formula of the Silca Secret Chain Blend or Hot Wax X?

It should. It's simply converting the existing oil & grease molecules to a more "wax-like" molecule so it will work in concert with the wax you're using.

So could we just strip the chain and dip it in the wax pot and skip the strip chip? The answer is yes, I am sure. Just wondering the pros and cons of the strip chip vs separate strip.

Hi guys, I've tried reaching out to your sales team and haven't heard back from them in a week. My wax melter arrived and the box says it's a 110v system, whereas the manual inside says it's a variable 110-240v system. We're on a 220v 50hz grid here. Which of those should I trust? Do I need a step down transformer, or can I just convert the plug and I'm good to go? Don't want to destroy it on first use!

What plug does it have? The 110V units all have American plug types, and all other plug types are 220-240V 50hz

I ride a recumbent, so I would like to know if the new pot can hold 3 chains in one go?

I don't think its big enough for that. You might want to look at an InstantPot with SousVide feature, those are also PID controlled and will give you very good temp control in a much larger capacity. amzn.to/3cbxKVJ

Hello Josh! I've been using Silca hot melt wax and i am very happy with the performance of the product. I wanted to get your wax based lube to go with the hot melt wax but where i live it's difficult to import one. However UFO drip lube is distributed here so just wanted to check is it safe that i use ufo drip lube to put on top of silca hot melt wax?

Does this work with a chain that was used with oil based lubricants ? So for example dirty used chain - in ultrasonic bath with some Degreaser an after drying use the strip chip ?

Something I have been wondering is how to tell if your wax has become too hot and what it would look like afterwards and what are the indicators? These looks like brilliant products, I love the thought that has gone into it to keep improving the process.

Will this process work if I’ve been using a petroleum based lube on my chain?

Since the 70's I have always cleaned the factory grease from my chains. Doesn't everyone?

Hi Josh, great product, i got it already😀 QUESTION: Could you please explain WHY the quick link can’t be used multiple times? Because in order to wax my chains i have to remove the chains of my bikes and put them back. Do i have to use a new quick link every 2-3 wax cycles???😮

Quick question: If I want to wax 3 new chains in a row (for example): 1. I add the wax. 2. I add one Stripchip. 3. I wax the first new chain. 4. To wax another 'new' chain immediately after, do I need to add another Stripchip immediately, or is the initial Stripchip enough to wax numerous new chains before adding another Stripchip? I get that you can re-wax the same chain numerous times and only add a new Stripchip later on when you have a new chain to wax. But, what if the new chains are all waxed at around the same time? Thanks!

1 StripChip per factory chain, so each time you are placing a factory greased chain in wax, you will need to add a StripChip. Think of StripChip like pacman and factory grease like a board of white dots.. each stripchip can clear one level of the game before being used up.

How often can this wax be reused after waxing a new chain .

How critical is the upper temperature? Not sure what temp my slow cooker reaches, so i think ill have to get the thermocouples out to check.

The wax can become damaged beyond hope at 140C so it's pretty important, this is why we went with the much more expensive PID control in the pot.. If using a crock pot you definitely need a candy thermometer or similar to ensure you get to 125 but not beyond 130C.

I'm definitely gonna give this a go.
