Add a length of silicone tube to the nozzle of the syringe. Safer on the FEP and you can the tip to what ever angle works best for you.

I second this as well! I cut one length at an angle to offer more of a suction surface area.

And if you cut little notches in the vat end of the tube, that helps to prevent it from suctioning itself to the film

Yep, wrote the same thing in my comment; you can also use a silicone glass pane wiper instead of a spatula.

AGREED It is amazing!
Just 3D print a small slanted ramp so that it makes all the resin go to one of the bottom corners of the vat. You'll save yourself a lot of time scraping and be able to carefully use the syringes a lot more efficiently and safely with two hands without scratching the FEP. Also get some soft rubber tubing that will fit your chosen syringe size and cut a small piece (.5") over the syringes hard plastic tip, this will help to protect the FEP as well. Doing this will all but eliminate having to scrape it if you just let it sit there for a few minutes and give it time to work itself down to the corner after you take the majority of the resin out of the vat. As far as not spilling it you can also take the vat to a machine shop and have them cut a small slant in one of the corners to act as a pouring funnel to pour it back into your resin containers. I have a few printers that have this built-in from the factory but I've also taken one of the ones before that didn't have that to a machine shop and it was very easy for them to do it for me and not very expensive at all, I think I paid $20 to have it done.

I was thinking something similar. Couldnt I just stick a wedge under the entire printer? Or would that damage something? That way we could leave it on the printer.
A silicon dough scraper makes a better alternative to the plastic spatula since it won't scratch the FEP.

Same, we bought one after our first print and never looked back! :)
Use an automotive one, those medical disposable ones tend to be sorta costly and the rubber likes to stick. Automotive ones (basically, big rebuildable ones for sucking up oil and fluids) tend be fixable, and they have a replaceable and flexible pipe on the end.

Print a ramp so you can pitch the reservoir to collect in a corner. You can even put a threaded hole to connect to the reservoir.
Snip a piece of tubing from the pump off and fix it to the end of a syringe so it won't scratch the FEP and maybe make positioning a little easier AND add resin to a vat mid print nice and easy.
The scratching problem can be avoided entirely by using soft elastic materials, like a miniature glass pane wiper instead of a spatula (the cost is pretty much the same) and fitting a small length of hose on the syringe tip.

Don't throw the pump on ebay just yet, you could set it up so that it could easily add resin to to vat of a large print in progress, either manually, or if you rigged up a float switch, automatically(use caution of course)
Feel like I'm missing a key bit of info, how is everyone having enough trouble cleaning out the vat for this to be worth it. It only takes like 30 seconds to pour the vat out into a filter/funnel, and then maybe another 30 seconds to clean the filter & funnel?

Glad to see this comment. I just assumed this video exists to make another you tube video. There is a pour spout on the vat for a reason. Invest in a silicone spatula and funnel strainer.

I have 2 of the 500ml, one had no suction like yours the other had good suction. Plus using the plastic tube that comes with it helps suction and stops scratches.

I was highly interested by the pump but clearly the syringes is my way to go. Ordering now!! Instead of using the scraper on a flat surface, I will design a tilting tray to sit the vat in, which will slide the resin to one corner! Awesome pal, subscribed.
I just printed a spout thats flush with the vat. I then epoxied on and It keeps any resin drips do form far away from the base of the vat and as long as you dont completely miss the funnel with the well defined stream you get there is no mess. Just sit it down on a paper towel and there you go.
This is a great idea! Along with the ideas others have posted like the wedge and silicon tube on the nozzle it has definite possibilities. Not sure though if I would just be moving the vat edge cleaning to syringe cleaning though. I would have to try and see. This would likely be better on vats bigger than my mars pro though.

The pump has another use, it is GREAT if you use Mica or other additives in your resin to keep it mixed in and such. Syringes are great for doping resin as well. Great video as always!
I'm a nursing student and watching you do this makes me wonder if one of my practice catheter foleys - cut to a much shorter length - could help reduce the risk of scratching the FEP. I dont have a 3D printer to try this out though
I recently looked into the prestaltic pump and found that you can easily, for not much more money, find ones with a lot more flow. Whether they have enough power to suck up thicker resins, I don't know. Also, there are few good videos here on YT about building/3D printing your own pump. That said, I just have a 6inch printer so I think I'll stick the either the funnel or syringe;)
u can use a silicone squeegee for the vat to not scratch the fep
you can add a spring to one hand suction, like in solder sucker but less aggressive
Would it not be a good idea to 3d print a pour spout that attaches to the vat then just pour slowly? Maybe a handle too if it is too difficult for you to grip with one hand. Clip them both on and put the funnel in the resin bottle then off to the races. I just feel like with 3d printing there must be a tool that you can design to aid with most of these issues.

Adding cheap aquarium tubing from a hardware store is a $2 fix for the syringe gouging the FEP 👍
Maybe you can use the pump to make a lil vacuum chamber for some pouring shenanigans?

I'd bought the syringes before seeing the peristaltic pump vid. These were for washing inside of resin prints though.
sure there is some silicone tube thingys what can be put on the tip of the syringe do minimize the change to damage the fep...
Not sure if this has been recommended, but there are these tiny oil pumps that people use for RC planes. I feel like those are going to work wonders.
About scratches and spatula. I think you could build (Maybe print) some kind of stand to place your vat like diagonally to surface. Resin would gather in lowest part by itself and you could drain most of without touching a fep. Also it would free your hands since you don't need a plastic spatula

I was just thinking that; I have a massive hunk of support I haven't had the heart to just throw away, it's a perfect angle/shape for this. I'm going to keep it and use it for that.
Maybe you could have the vat on a small slanted surface or on a soft wedge, that way the resin can go to towards the lower end with gravity and you can get more of it using both hands on the syringe vs trying gather it with one hand and use the syringe with the other
What about a squeeze bulb syphon pump? Like the type used to move gasoline or fuel oils between containers? Could you make one of those work? Probably cheaper than the pump you first showed off and safer for the FEP because of softer flexible hoses that are on a syphon pump. Just depends on if you could actually make the syphon work, and how easy it would be to clean the syphone pump after use.
Much easier and less chance of deforming the FEP if you raise one of the short sides of the vat on to something ( I use one of my Elegoo carbon filters for example) and allow gravity to do the hard work for you. The resin pools up and sucking up with a syringe becomes a lot quicker. For extra peace of mind add a hose to the end of the nozzle and use a silicon scraper for any remaining resin on the fep. 👍
to be even better put a little rubber tube at the end to prevent scratch the fep, and its flexible
Would the printer still work if you put something under three of the four corners so that it was tilted ever so slightly in two directions? You seem to spend a decent amount of time, energy, and free hands tilting the bed separately so that the left-over resin slides to the corner you have the syringe/pump input located. If the printer were slightly tilted in that direction by default would that eliminate the need to that (and, maybe, some/all of the scraping if the resin in the vat is low enough viscosity)?
I just have a MP2, so pouring out remnant and swabbing out vat isn't too much of a job so far.
have you tried a silicone spatula? ive been using one i got from the cooking section at walmart for a couple bucks, never scratched the fep once with it
i would slightly elevate one side of the vat so the resin pools all to one side. thought he syringe is a brilliant idea
One problem - how do you clean the resin out of the syringe afterward? Do you just buy a separate syringe for every type/colour of resin you use and leave it in there?
Hi, resin noob I am wondering do you have any info on your channel regarding complete out the box, setup up. use and clean. so basically full process please? Do all 3d resin prints have to be washed, how can this be done? Any help would be great. :)
I use a 5 gallon pail with lid. Cut a hole in the lid so I can fit the vat in at a 45 degree angle. I put the 1ltr bottle with funnel and filter inside the pail. Put the vat and lid on and walk away to do other things. Sure, I have to take the vat out of the printer. I come back 5 to 10 minutes later and it's pretty much empty.
Great set of videos. All in all, does the toxicity/mess, print quality, and greater cost of Resin outweigh the hassle of setup, slightly less quality, and cheaper cost of FDM for primarily TT minis? Thanks

I have a fdm and a resin printer, tried really hard to print tt minis with the fdm and was a real success, great quality minis can be done BUT the printing time for just 1 mini not worth it, in the time a fdm print 1 quality mini the resin one printed 7 and with far more quality and maybe in less time so... i use the fdm mainly to print terrain, dice towers or large pieces. p.d you can find some cura slicer profiles on videos of this channel, they are amazing to print minis on fdm.

@@soul_toys Thank you for the info. I saw the one on FDM profiles. Time isn't an issue for me. Its mostly to print a few mini's and terrain for GM. I'd definitely was leaning toward Resin, but the mess and potential toxicity turned me off some. Still weighing options. Stay well
Attach a short piece of the rubber tube you have on the pump to the Syringe, the rubber is less likely to damage Film than the Hard tip.
Maybe put a flexible tube on the end of the syringe so it's a lot less likely to scratch the FEP?

Out of curiosity, what is the blue mat you are working on? I've seen many tips on how to clean and empty a resin vat but not much on which surface to work on to avoid scratching.

Slap matt, or more likely given the colour, a pet silicone mat. Both have a raised lip on edge
You don't mention cleaning the syringe vs cleaning the hose and pump. I am guessing the syringe easier to clean?
how do you clean the syringe after the use? just flushing some IPA?
Could you use the same tubing on the end of the syringe that would reduce the scratches like that pump
0:13 - This is as close to KZread famous as I'll ever get. LOL BTW, adding a short piece of the rubber tubing to the end of the syringe will help keep from scratching the FEP.
Larger diameter nozzle size on the syringe.
What about using an automotive brake pump kit?
Why does the pool not have a drain port on the side with a sort of an angle?
I wish I can send you a photo of a good funnel they sell it Amazon for four dollars and you don’t need all that other garbage you using pick it up pour it back in the bottle that’s how simple it is
If you need to take the tray out to easily use the syringe, why not just tip the stuff back into the bottle - and save cleanup on the syringe? In fact, you could design and print a stand to hold the tray vertically above your bottle and filter paper so you could leave it to drain in its own time.

Because as discussed in his previous video, simply pouring from the vat is a messy process, you get resin all down the outside of the corner, not to mention the increased likelihood of drips.
These videos are kind of weird to me. I only have one of the smaller "standard sized" resin printers, but I never had any problems just pouring the vat into a funnel, without spilling it everywhere. And I'm already not the most steady-handed or, franky, -headed individual. But maybe that's just one of my hidden semi-useless strengths :P Still, if pumps or syringes work better for other people, more power to you :)
thicker resins? How well does it work with thicker resins like siraya tech blue?

why notprint something to keep the vat slightly tilted and then use the syringe?
You should make a hole in the side of the vat and have another hole flat to the lcd so you can just use that hole

Sometimes I don't wanna remove the vat (like if a small failure that I don't wanna use vat clean feature for), and when I do - the pour can be messy, even if I'm careful. This especially addresses the risk of mess and spills.

Couldnt you just 3D print a stand that leaves the vat at an angle? So that you dont have to tilt the vat manually? MAybe even make something that you can adjust to different degrees so that you can tilt it slightly at the start, then more the less resin is in the vat?
I've been using syringers for a while now. Too bad I wasted around 10-15of those because of slacky cleaning and leaving them on the sunlight ._.
Cut the 500ML nosel on a 40-45°
every time the 300ml syringe was shown, and there was whining and complaining about how it didn't work well i wanted to yell at the screen. #1 put a block under the left side of the PRINTER to TIP the WHOLE printer to the side enough to flow the resin all the way to one end. #2 CUT the end of the syringe at the perfect angle to so the END HOLE can lay planar to the fep -- use a lighter flame or light sand paper to smooth the edges of the cut. Or superglue tubing onto the end of the syringe and use that instead. if you're so worried about scratching the FEP, why on earth are you using a HARD PLASTIC SCRAPER to DRAG resin across the FEP?!?! Get a soft silicone squeegee blade used for doing car window tinting. something 3 or 4" wide. Something with a hardness level that is softer than FEP. Use your infinitely powerful thinker brain blob.

Except you don't even acknowledge the reality of accidental spills when pouring like that, the 'paper towel' step you so quickly conclude, can be a lot more involved and frustrating than you suggest
You missed to explain how you clean the syringe…
Why don't you just put a book or something under the tank so all the resin goes into one corner? . No need for the spatula at all.
Angle the vat so the lowest point is in one of the corners, just prop it up with some stuff underneath, this way all the resin will flow down to one spot, making it easier to suck up
whats wrong with just tipping the vat into the filter/funnel... just be careful... hardly rocket science
Danny, Thank you for sharing this - along with the previous video you've sparked an interest in actually using my resin printer that I bought but got discouraged from using after only the test print. A great video - it's good to hear you didn't use any swear words this time - back to the old ways :) I find all the swearing (albeit bleeped-out) very non-family friendly and quite unlike the way you created content before the first Lost Adventures kickstarter. I can't see it as anything other than a cheap attention-grab. It is very low if you ask me. If it is not too much to ask: could you please think about not using expletives in the future videos? I mean it's hard for me to not use them when I'm furious, but I still wish I could not ever spout that kind of language again. I like to follow a quote from Jeff Cannata: "Think about what you put out into the world. Make it a better place." I have only printed (on FDM) and painted the Green dragon from the first Lost Adventures, but I support all your kickstarters. Thank you for your work and good luck in the future :)
