I've only had it about a week but I'm going to put this stuff on top of everything to help protect the lap sealant from the Sun and adding an layer of waterproofing on top of that.

    Excellent video. I’ve been working as a Rv tech since retiring from carpentry. Eternabond tape is a worthy product. If I may offer a few IMO tips; clean,clean, clean, the cleaner the better. I use Oxiclean with a soft to medium bristle scrub brush. For really stubborn dirt afterwords rapid remover on a soft towel will help remove some of the chalking of the sealant making for better adhesion. If it’s several layers we use an oscillating tool with a smooth blade to shave the layers down ( the idea is to prevent damming around the penetration). Eternaclean works well just prior to installation, but, acetone on a rag works just as well. My suggestion for all corners of tape is to round the edges like you see in the ladder penetration in the video. You do this with really sharp tight bladed scissors, pull the scissors back slightly as your cutting. Tack one end of the tape down and with slight tension align while peeling back the backing tape. You don’t want to pull too hard for the tape will be under constant tension if you do and start to recoil over time. Pay attention you get one chance to put it down! Wherever it touches it calls home.😂 Great preventive maintenance work done. Water is the enemy of these campers keeping it out is essential. I’ve seen 5 year old campers that were literally sponges and once we opened walls it took days to dry out even with dehumidifiers. My advice if your not using your camper cover it to keep the water off. Even if it’s the roof and a couple of feet down the sides it will extend the life of your camper by years.

    I applied Eternabond to all my roof and slide seams 12 years ago. It’s still sealed like the day I installed it. I had a leak on my slide from day one that the dealer would dump lap sealer on and it would start to leak again after 6 months. The prep was a lot of work and you have to pay attention to the install.

    The better alternative that everyone should know about is that all you need to seal your roof vents forever is to use a non-setting butyl sealant. Sikalastomer 710, or similar. NOT a Sikaflex adhesive no matter if it is marketed as RV product or not. Especially if you have to use it on a not-completely flush surface.

    And for those in Australia, from what I’ve seen by aged experiments, the best equivalent to eternabond, you can buy in this country is a product made by Gorilla. It’s sold by Bunnings at least. I’m going to use it and I will do all the same prep steps and application method recommended for eternabond.

    I did the roof on my last trailer 20 years ago. It's still holding up well and looks great. I ended up using Hengs on the rest of the EPDM roof, which also has worked well for over 5 years now. Prepping with acetone caused the glue under the EPDM to let go. When I do my new trailer, I will steer clear of it.

    I rejuvenated my 97 Tiffin Allegro EDPM rubber roof this spring, and this (using Eternabond) is very similar to what I did at each and every roof penetration point. That said, I went one step further and coated the entire roof with Henry Tropicool silicone. At 26 years old, my EDPM had seen better days. While it still had *some* life left and I have seen WAY worse roofs, I decided that it was time to not chase little leaks again. I removed ALL the old sealant/caulking, and all trim. While I left the AC, shower dome, and refer vents on, I did take the opportunity to replace the old ceiling fan vents with new MaxxAir versions....esp since this was (hopefully) the last time I'd be doing any real roof work. After installing the new vents, I used Eternabond on EVERY penetration point, including over the front/rear fiberglass cap trim pieces. Following that, I taped off where I didn't want silicone and rolled it on. After two coats, the roof looks new with Henry's lifetime warranty. If you have time and an extra $400, I highly recommend Henry Tropicool over that Eternabond.

    I was literally going to ask about this. I really appreciate your comment! We just purchased our first RV, and it being a 2004, it’s due for some modernization, as well as a fresh sealing on the roof (thankfully, still no leaks). The previous owners took very good care of it, but now it’s time for a bit of refurbishing. I’ve had a hard time trying to figure out exactly what to seal it with, and was thinking I had to pick only one product, but thank you again for this!

  • @jeffreymissal

    @jeffreymissal

    @@justinbond558 Just make sure you do do the butyl tape and eternabond BEFORE you Tropicool because they WILL NOT adhere correctly to silicone based coatings. And, for added measure, if you caulk like I did after the Tropicool (or similar), make sure you use a silicone-based caulk. The hardest part (for me) was getting under the AC units...everything else is accessible...I just didn't want to go through the pain of R&R. That part of the EDPM doesn't get any sun or much water anyway, so I think I'm safe.

    Have a RPod which has one piece fiberglass roof that runs all the way from front to back. The point of weakness as far as water intrusions is the seams between the sidewalls and the roof. After replacing the crappy vinyl trim and the gazillion non galvanized screws that comes from the factory many in our community, including myself, cover those seams with Eternabond. Many have 5+ years on theirs with no signs of degradation.

    I have yet to see anyone including techs remove all the old lap sealant when replacing let’s say a vent. They cut through the old sealant around the perimeter of the vent and install the new one and then apply lap sealant over the new flange and old sealant If there is tape it can be removed similar but new installation will be much flatter , smoother and more professional. imo.

    I first used the 2 inch EternaBond tape to address a leak in our bunkroom slide. When I finally figured out the problem was on the roof of the slide, I cleaned up all the nasty looking glue that was up there. Cleaned the roof with dish soap so it was so clean I could eat off it. Then I put the EternaBond on. Stuck really nice. No leaks in that slide since. I've since used it on the edge of the roof where I discovered a tear in the roof membrane about 3 inches long. I've already decided I wanted to do this project. I bought the 3 inch EternaBond, but I also haven't started yet. Can you imagine an RV roof that's 100% EternaBond Tape? LOL

If getting another 15 years out of the entire roof happens, then this less maintenance way seems like a better choice as I'll be in my 60s not wanting to be up there resealing anymore.

    Wow, thank you for this excellent video. Eternabond is what I'll be using when the lap sealant on my RV is ready for replacement. My only issue is that the manufacturer gooped on so much lap sealant (I'm talking like almost an inch thick!) and left it very uneven on the top that I'm probably going to have to try to shave it down with a knife or remove most of it before I put on the Eternabond tape.

    I don't understand the negative comments here. The people that love lap sealant are upset with this for some weird reason lol I guess they are the lucky few that haven't had to deal with water issues...... But for me I did on my last motorhome and it was a nightmare and I got up on the roof of my brand new camper trailer and saw the lap sealant was perfect without cracks and I thought to myself I'm going to put the internal bond over the lab sealant to protect the lapsulin from UV rays. If for some crazy reason the eternal bond fails then I have a second barrier underneath it that is basically brand new with no UV damage. And yes I know how to spell this stuff but I'm using my voice text and being lazy. On a side note this 2024 trailer that is brand new claims to have a 2-year warranty on everything and a 3-year structure warranty but when I talk to the warranty department the roof sealant aka joints and penetrations only have a 3-month warranty, that tells you how confident they are in their sealing products. They said if I put that tape on the roof it would void the warranty and I laughed at them and I said what warranty

    @@WhyWait I had a bad leak, I didn't have time to do anything with my rv roof this last summer, and once I got the chance we were experiencing 25-40 degree weather and heavy rain was on the forecast for the following week...I removed my old gutters and realized I've been getting somewhere damage through the screws attaching the gutter to the trailer....well the eternabond covers all that plus the edges so that problem is fixed, and then I needed something to seal my roof that could be applied in cold temperatures, which brought me to pick Henry's Tropicool, it can be applied down to 35 degrees and supposedly it only needs 15 minutes and it's rain ready haha. I applied it 3 days before it started raining in 38 degree weather, and it's now been raining heavy for a few days....not even a hint of a leak. I previously would use decor lapseal and it lasted a couple years before it started leaking...I'm confident the eternabond will last longer then my ownership of this rv.

    Eternabond is the way to go. I cleaned seams and added eternabond years ago right over seams on fiberglass roof not only does it look way better it has not been effected in 10 years. My roof seams and around my vents This stuff holds to roof really tightly it is hard to remove but with a heat gun you can pull it off. But why would you. You need to go slow laying it down keeping it straight and being neat. One other use I use it for is extra hold on wires on roof for cameras and solar panel brackets. I used a good industrial adhesive to add to my solar brackets verse making holes in roof which has held fine. But going over the brackets is just extra precaution and it looks good as well. Those brackets have held fine. I never used lap seal it’s a messy ugly look and I don’t trust it eternabond is proven method.

    Easy fix. Make minimal use of Eternabond tape. Forget Dicor products. Use a isocyanate free, 100% solids self leveling product like Premier Pro sealant. It only takes one properly applied application to last the lifetime of a typical RV. It does not collect dirt like Dicor. It can be applied to wet surfaces for emergency repairs. It maintains an elastic seal that will not break or release from the surfaces. I only have one problem with Premier Pro sealant. It is light grey in color. However, that's a small price for a guaranteed one and done application.

  • @theboondockbungalow1816
    @theboondockbungalow18166 ай бұрын

    Neither Dicor self-leveling lap sealant or eternabond tape is a good idea on an RV rubber roof membrane. Both will cause a chemical reaction with the membrane contact cement that holds it in place, causing the membrane to disbond from the plywood or OSB board to which it is adhered and will cause wrinkles and bubbles in the membrane. Eternabond tape may last a long time and it may look good when you first put it down, but a couple of months later it will be full of bubbles and your roof membrane will no longer be adhered to the substrate. My roof is a total mess because I listen to KZreadrs two years ago and put Eternabond around my vent fans and other areas after installations and the same thing with Dicor self-leveling sealant, it causes the membrane to wrinkle and bubble like crazy.

    Talked to my rv mechanic friend about this. He says it works great in most cases. Downside he says is it can be hard to see if it fails. Lap sealant you can see cracks. Eternabond you will notice failing once you have water damage inside walls with it still looking fine outside. Just a couple small spots of lost adhesion can create a lot of damage. But it all comes down to proper application. That being said he thinks more people screw up redoing their lap sealant so more damage is being caused by that.

The seal is installed before either product can be installed. So, if you have a leak, putting a bandaid on top is just that. You have not fixed the real issue, you just covered it up.

    I'm 8 months into full-time camper life. 2007 Crossroads Cruiser 32BL. A hail storm got me in April & I need to coat & seal my roof asap. My question is... Why would you cover the screws on slide out with that tape if it's so difficult to remove? What if slide-out needs work?

  • @WhyWait

    Those screws I’m covering are nothing more than holding that trim piece in place. Not exactly something that needs to be replaced often and if I do need to remove that trim it basically means I need to remove my whole slide wall and I have bigger problems to worry about than a little tape. Plus the tape is difficult to remove, not impossible, it just takes a little work and patience. 👍🏼

    @@WhyWait 2 of my 3 slide outs are delaminating already. That's why I was curious! I'm still in the newborn stages of this lifestyle but love it so far! So, do I do tape or lap sealant 1st... then coating last?

    If you wash your roof once a year with rubber conditioner it stays soft so no cracking, but im gonna do the edges ,they git that ahitty plastic strip

    I’m sure it will 👍🏼 EternaBond bonds to virtually any surface except silicone. This includes all roofing materials, brick, wood, metal, stucco, rubber, vinyl, canvas, etc.

    @@WhyWait I’m not concerned about it bonding, but there is some concern about the chemical reaction to certain products that could bring about a problem down the road

    Definitely Steve! I put it off for too long. Glad I did it. Now it’s a project for sure and the tape is not forgiving. Go slow, prep correctly, take your time and just do it right the first time and it should be the last time you need to go up there. Thanks for watching as always 👍🏼

    In the beginning of the video you mention that there are perceived negatives to using Eternabond, namely the difficulty of removal and mention that the issue will be addressed later in the video, but you never do. I've applied the product on my roof a few years ago and it's been a godsend! But your thoughts on possible removal would be helpful.

    First time rv owner and I thoroughly enjoy your informative vids. Should I put this on my brand new rig? I'm in residential construction by trade, I've been on the roof and thoroughly looked it over and as of right now everything is good and no leaks but I'm thinking having the eternabond as a redundancy

    Thanks you, appreciate that. I can’t tell you what to do but all I can say is that I will always have this on any RV I own. Eventually that sealant will crack, flake and require maintenance year after year. Putting the tape down over it is an extra layer of protection like you said and will outlast the life of the RV. Just do it right, clean the surface good and take your time. 👍🏼Appreciate you watching.

    Questions: I have repaired, sanded and cleaned a vintage metal roof camper. Should I paint the entire roof first and then apply the Eternabond tape? Or should I apply the tape and then paint. Thank you!

    I do t know anything about that sort of roof so I really can’t tell you. All I can tell you is that EternaBond bonds to virtually any surface except silicone. This includes all roofing materials, brick, wood, metal, stucco, rubber, vinyl, canvas, etc.
