Never Ran, Never Will: Redevelopment and Displacement in Middletown, CT

In 1961, the City of Middletown embarked on a program of urban renewal that razed the downtown area and displaced 33 African-American families from their homes. Due to discriminatory housing practices, many were unable to find homes in Middletown and the city briefly created a tent city. Tracing this thread of discriminatory housing and the lack of affordable housing in Middletown and in the US, this documentary looks at the closing of Long River Village and the Section 8 Voucher Program.

I grew up in the Vill. I still can't believe it's gone.So many memories. It may have been slummish but it was home to hundreds of people. Everyone knew everyone. We had a store a daycare a rec center basketball and baseball court. It was the shit. They could have at least granted them the funds to redo the Vill to fix it up. Memories! Thanks for the Video

Wow! This video brings back so many memories. It's sad to see the pictures of the vill being demolished. I have some pictures that I'll cherish now that it's gone. People think because it was a housing project that it wasn't a good place to live but let me tell you. There were so many great things about LRV. Like someone mentioned we had a store that had an arcade machine and we would go there to play Pac-man. I remember on hot days going to get a ice cream for ten cents or buying a pickle in a sandwich bag and asking for pickle juice. The daycare was right in the front. I also went there as a child. My mother, Karen, worked there for a few years. We would get free lunch from the center. The winters were the best as a child going sledding and making a ramp at the end of the hill. Playing kickball on MacArthur court. I learned how to play double dutch. I could go on and on. Living in the vill molded me into the person I am today and for that I am thankful I grew up there. Always and forever LRV!!!!!!

I GREW UP IN THE VILLAGE FROM 1942 TO 1958. WE LIVED AT 3 ROOSEVELT DRIVE AND THEN 6 ROOSEVELT DRIVE. THE ONLY REASON IT WAS COMPLETELY REMOVED IS BECAUSE IT WAS DRUG INFESTED. THE PEOPLE THAT LIVED THERE IN THE END HAVE NOBODY TO BLAME BUT THEM SELVES. IT WAS A NICE PLACE TO LIVE AND GROW UP. I WAS REALLY SHOCKED WHEN I CAME BACK IN 2015 TO FIND IT GONE. WHAT A SHAME. THEY DID IT TO THEMSELVES, IT WASN'T THE CITY OF MIDDLETOWN OR HUD. JUST SAYING SAYING

So I noticed that the one man referred to having white and black friends in the village. Was this area comprised of both blacks and whites?
