    never raise your fifth wheel before backing under a trailer. get about 2/3 if the way under, then raise until the trailer begins lifting off the ground, back until the fifth wheel locking jaws “click”, tug test, then raise.

    If you happen to miss though raise the trailer all the way up, bring your landing gear all the way down drop your 5th wheel and pull out. Of course only works for yard tractors.

    Awesome, I usually lift and tug test at the same time, since engine is reved up. But yes a great way not to miss king pin. If you do miss it and end up behind it, lift trailer up enough so 5th wheel clears pin, get off and raise landing gear (makes it way easier without the weight) then set trailer on the floor, pull out and try again.

    Sometimes with a low sitting trailer we lower the nose by cranking landing gear ¾ the way up, then pull out very slowly, holding brakes hard. This rocks the back of the trailer up, closer to level of the dock to make it safer for forklifts. Our management won't provide the correct size ramps. 🙄 To hook back up, we have to lower 5th wheel all the way and slam into the trailer to get back under it. I call it "smacking the taint!"

  • @backwoodhound3426
    @backwoodhound34262 жыл бұрын

    That’s great advice but also tug the trailer 2 or 3 times before even engaging the breaks or getting off to connect the airlines. I’ve seen a guy drop a fully loaded scrap load and he never came back to work. Keep up the good work. Stay alert stay alive stay safe. ✌️

    Firstly not all trailers are going to be at the same clerance height for you to slide your fifth wheel smoothly underneath the apron for the locking jaws to catch the shank around the kingpin. some are lower due to how the trailers are set by the landing gear. Cause some drivers like to dump their tractors airbags before lowering the landing. So by rasing the hostler fifth wheel up slightly can actually cause the fifth wheel to smack the front of the trailer. Damaging the apron underneath the trailer. Not mention the header board as well. If you want to have it done simple. Have the fifth wheel set at its lowered position. Backup to the trailer making sure your hostler is lined up with the trailer. Then back the hostler up till you see the fifth wheel is more than 3/4 of the underneath the trailer. Then apply the spring brake put in neutral. Then raise the fifth wheel up till you see trailer rising up bit. Make sure you don't raise it to high cause If by accident you put it in drive an go forward the trailer doesn't slam into the ground and possible break the landing gears. Once the trailer is lifted. Put the hostler in reverse an release the spring brake. An back slowly till you hear the fifth wheels locking jaws clink. Followed by a sutain jolt. Put it in drive an preform a tug test. An your set. Yeah sure her method is faster an shaves off a few to 10 seconds but is it worth the risk of high hooking the trailer or damaging the trailer. Or not preforming a tug test to insure that the locking jaws are secured around the shank of the kingpin an not the just the kingpin. Cause one good bounce or turn will knock the kingpin off the fifth wheel an then you have a bigger problem. Always preform a tug test case you better off having trailer fall in either at the dock door or at a parking slip then in transit in the yard.
