you're doing it, man. This is a question I've had for a while but I didn't know how to describe it. I enjoyed this one.
Been having this issue lately. Just don’t know where to have my hands. Played in a tournament last weekend and the inconsistency got me. Going to give this a try. Thanks for all the help. You are appreciated!
Impeccable timing! I had this realization yesterday and my ball striking and accuracy changed for the better instantly. Thanks for the reinforcement!
Great tip! You have finally answered my question about low and high hands. Cupped as opposed to flat left wrist at the top of the backswing. I am working on a flat wrist position and shallowing the club. This tip will help me achieve it! Thanks!! Always learn something new from watching your videos!
Holy man, what timing!! I've been working on my hand level placement and this makes total sense. Thx you !
Thanks for your videos! I am 48 and just got back into golf after a 20 year drought, Used to play with my Grandfather until he passed and just never picked up clubs till this year when my 10 Year old Daughter showed an interest. Your tips have helped me strike the ball much better and more consistent. I still need work but at least starting to feel confident I will get back on a course by years end. Wish you were in Greenville SC!!! I would love lessons from you!
This video came at the perfect time for me. Tried it out at the range last night, and wow, my shot shape improved, distance was better, and my swing felt more natural. Thank you Mr. Short Game! Keep it up, love your videos and commentary.
Thanks for keeping it short and getting to the point !
The right video at the right time!!! Found myself cupping and was wondering where it came from. Set up and there it was. Thanks for the video!!!
I had never thought about this before & ive thought a lot about the golf swing. Believe it’s going to be a game changer. Matt, love how you comment on aspects of game & golf swing that no one else seems to think of let alone address. Thanks man, keep up the awesome work
Thanks for this. I'd had a lesson a couple years ago and the instructor got me with much higher hands and more upright posture. It felt weird which is probably why I forgot about it, but when I did it on the course I hit it great. It does everything you say in the video. Much easier to turn, my hands get much higher, my cupped wrist goes away and I can now flatten the plane in the transition instead of steepening. All good things.
Hey coach this is a great video a lot of my golf buddy wonders why I lift my hands up just like you show here thank you 🙏🏽 much for this 1 now they might get it YOU ARE THE MAN COACH and I get just those results I’ve been doing it for 4 years now and it definitely helped my game
Thanks! This really opened my mind, might be why I sometimes end up on my back side coming up... I might be setting up low without knowing
Great video Matt; thanks for covering this topic. I’ve been struggling lately, and like you my hands have been getting gradually lower without my even realizing it. The way I see it, with low hands at setup you’re shortening your swing radius before you even take the club back. If you start out with too much of an an angle between your arms and the club, centrifugal force will straighten that angle coming down and change the low point of the swing. I’ve been hitting shots fat lately, and now I know why. Thanks again my man; great video! 👍
Hadn’t played for 8 weeks after busting my ankle. Went to the range today for the first time and remembered this video as I watched it 2 months ago. Felt so much easier with higher hands so will def persevere with this. Great tip 👍
Matt...You are so right on here! Thanks for the FIX! It really helped.
I was trying different angles with the sole of my 9 iron the other day and seeing the different club face angles and which direction the club face was pointing. Surprisingly this also changed the position of my set up which up until now I had not taken notice of. The timing of your video helps me understand. Thank Matt, as always great content. Stay well
Great video Matt! I never focused on this before but great to know the result differences. I will focus now on not being low at address. Thanks!
Thanks Matt This video is spot on with a posture change I've made recently. This change has improved consistency and added distance (Fade or Draw) to my game. Thanks for the lesson
This was such a great tip!! Helped straighten out an inconsistency I couldn’t figure out!
Great video! I lowered my hands (and "squatted" a bit) thinking it would allow me to be more shallow at impact and more of a "picker" than leaving a deep divot (I get too steep). But I struggle with distance, especially with long irons, woods, and my driver. Going to give this a try. Appreciate the video!
You totally described my set up. And you described my problems perfectly. Will be trying the high hands at the range ASAP. Thanks so much.
Never seen it described this way …great watch thanks will try this straight away ✌🏻
I stood up and setup, while watching this a second time, and lo an behold I am doing this exact thing...hands low and shots everywhere. I was very consistent with my irons earlier this year, so....Do not know how I got so low, but over time it seems i crept there. Gonna take this to the rang tomorrow. Timely in my case, thanks much!!!
I realized i was doing this on the range today. I came straight home and found your video. Perfect!!! Thanks
How come I've never heard anyone mention this before!! I've gone through every possible swing thought in the past two and a half years, and this idea of playing a slightly raised shaft position is doing wonders. I don't know, I think it's the fact that you see some beginners trying to play with an almost straight arm-club-line (and I've done that myself too in my early days) that has caused me to think that it's something beginners do. But boy, if you raise the handle just a little bit it really does wonders for your shoulders, just like you say. I call it my McIlroy move, because it kind of frees up my shoulder turn and I feel like it reminds me of what Rory does. It also helps to visualize the swing plane in my mind. And it makes the transition into lead hand bowing *a lot* more natural. Wonderful tip. And I still don't understand why it's not taught more frequently.
I found this out mid round. I am so glad because I was getting very discouraged. It felt so different I had to start by swinging slow and controlled. I was actually making good contact with what felt like less effort. 👍👍
Matt, a specific benefit of high hands is that it helps keep me on plane. As you mentioned, over the top is a problem stemming from low hands, and that is what led me to that conclusion. As always, thanks for all your hard work! ⛳️🏌🏽♂️❤️
I have been wondering about low or higher hands so this helps answer that question. Thanks Matt.
Great tip, I can't wait to try it out on the range!!
Wow. This definitely helped a lot. Going to practice holding it higher now
Thank you for a reminder. At times I struggle with this.
Great advice as usual. Very easy to overlook this one.
Wow! Makes sense and the your data shows merit. Unfortunately a ton of us, including myself, are doing this. Going to be the first thing I focus on at my next practice session. Thanks Matt! Btw, love all the content…whether back in Cali or now in Georgia! Big fan of your work🙏🏼👊🏼
Same here.. I suffered from this exact issue.. I played with my team a few days ago.. Iron shots was everywhere.. some ok, some awful.. this makes more sense.. thanks for the tips…. Much appreciated
Talk about synchronicity, I've been migrating to high hands for the last two weeks, I had some driver/woods issues taking it out to the course last week, but irons were actually the most solid part of my game. Much better consistency and less issues with low point control. Also much less balance issues in the backswing. I'm going to keep building this in, it's the best impact I've had. I actually went back and watched your high hands video from a couple years ago, so it's good to hear more feedback on this being an effective position vs the hands just hanging under the shoulders
Yeah. I had a little inspiration early this AM thinking about the geometry of the golf swing after watching a video of a golf pro last night and came to the conclusion standing more upright would mean better direction. A flatter wider arc is tougher to hit the ball square and straight. So I've been looking through quite a few videos relating to that. When I saw you had a video I knew I had to watch it. Haven't tried it out yet but will shortly. Thanks!!!
I’ve watching probably 30/40 of your videos since may. Shot my best round yet 40 on the front +2 through 4 on the back and got rained out I was pissed 😤 just wanted to say thanks for all the tips and help. Looking forward to seeing my handicap in my golf league finally lower than a 10👍🏻👍🏻
I needed this, thanks.
Thanks for the great lesson. Really helped me👍
Thanks! This really worked. I got more distance and consistency with both my irons and the driver. All of my shots were straighter.
Love this one I realize why this makes a difference the other day it took me half way thru a round to figure this out. Now I happen to see this video thanks and It's similar to Moe Norman and his hands
You’ve just solved my issue! I couldn’t figure it out for the past month! Thanks brother!
This tip was very helpful and rescued me from the inconsistency frustration maximus. Keep up the good work--you know what your talking about! Earned a much deserved "Subscribed"
Will try this soon. Love your tips. Hcp moving in the right direction lately.
Awesome tip . Got to give it a shot. Tomorrow.
Great tip....well explained thx.
This video helped so much I played base ball and this totally fixed my problems.
Great video, feel like I am doing same thing. Will move hands Up on Mondays game !
Great tip. Going to test it. I know I've been leaving my hands low.
Nice one Matt. Thank you.
Thank you so much For great golf lesson
Have to try this, last time I played I lost my consistency of my irons on the back nine. Maybe, you’re on to something. Definitely something to check in the setup. Thanks, love your tips!
Thanks for your posting. Actually I was confused and not feeling nice contact with low hand swing today. I am going to try to hit the ball with changed hand position not too much high you mentioned.
These are so valuable man, thank you for this
Great Tip!!!
THANK YOU!
Great lesson. Thank you very much 🙏
Thanks for posting.. I got some advice to drop my hands.. Knew if felt wrong and you just proved it! 👍😁
just excellent! thanks.
excellent, thank you very much
Great reminder tip!
Great advice
Thanks easy to understand. When my hands are too low inside out swing.
Thanks for the honesty. We need to know the good the bad and the ugly. This is a fantastic demonstration, sir. I’ve been trying to get my hands low and now I know why I’ve had some questionable results this past week. Cheers, mate. 🤜🤛⛳️
Great tip helped me alot cheers 👍
Excellent!
Thanks for the tip, i was struggeling with a cupped wrist.
Great information. I must cup my wrist because my swing thought is to square the club face. Love ya brother
Is love to have a few beers with you and talk golf swing! Videos are awesome
Another great video!! Hat recieved today as well!!
Just had this problem and could not figure out why my iron dispersion was so large. Hands too low. Followed your suggestion. Got distance back and tighter dispersion. Big help! Thanks!
Thank you for this video, i struggle with hands too low. And I struggle with watching setup videos on youtube because those instructors don't look like me (i am short).
Good stuff. I like to start tall, go down, then back up pushing off the lead leg.
Great video. Definitely have been getting frustrated with my swing and hope this will help. Subscribed 👍🏽
Top tip, will try this next time at the range.
Thank you for this video!!!! 🙏🙏 This advice just saved me... Had 2x 3hr range sessions this week and 2x 18 hole rounds and was missing left and right by a large margin each time; fighting myself and not trusting which direction my shots were gonna go! 🏌️♂️🤷♂️ Watched this vid then took to the range and had one of my best sessions this year... WOW, THANK YOU MR. SG !!!!!!!!!!!

... I watch and like all your vids but this one slipped thru - just clicked the notification bell for all the vids. You're the man!!!!!!!!!
Dude...I was having the same problem and I couldn't figure out what it was. Super inconsistent with distance and direction and could feel myself getting "stuck" in the downswing and started shanking it. Watched this video and realized that I had done the same thing in trying to get a more "athletic" position in my stance and had my hands real low. Went to the range, raised my hands and BOOM...right back on track. Took me a minute to work it out as I was obviously overworking my hands with the prior set-up to try and square the club face but once I was comfortable distance was back plus better dispersion of my golf shots. Thank you for this video as it helped me out tremendously.
Really helpful vid thanks a lot 👍🏻
Great video. I needed this. Greetings from Roswell, GA.
Good point. Wonder if that has been my recent problem. Hmmm????
Man I love your vids helped me out a tone
Really compelling data!
Great video!
I had to come back here to tell you all that I did this with my driver today (on the course, which I know is not a good place to tinker), but I smashed my driver the entire round. Hit every fairway with a natural baby fade. The last few rounds I was sprayin em. But this simple fix was total money. Thanks! Can’t wait to get back out tomorrow!
great tip...I did just watch a video yesterday that you had on driver tips, and one was to have the hands about one clubhead width away from your body. This would not be possible when you have the hands a bit higher, as in this video. Does it just come down to what works for the individual since those are contradictory? thanks!
great video as always
Very interesting!!🤔
Great video Matt. I cannot shallow the club for the life of me and I'm hoping this "proud posture" will give me more room to shallow in the downswing. On just about every shot, I feel like I'm expending a ton of energy akin to deadlifting 400 pounds and yet the ball goes an average distance at best. Sometimes I feel like you good golfers know a secret and don't want to tell us so that you can keep making videos. I kid of course. =)
Great video! As always
Mr SG, that is the best set up trick ever.
My handicapp has been steadily rising (7 to 12) for the past two years, as I fight a horrible shank. I started implementing higher hands at address based on my own observations. For the first time in two years, I am consistently hitting the clubface on the sweet spot or toward the toe, if I choose. This has been a game changer for me and the adjustment is minor, at least in my case. You owe it to yourself to examine your setup and see if a higher hand set at address might help
I never even thought about this before! I applied this lesson to my practice today and I was hitting some of my most solid iron shots ever. Great tip! What's great is that this move is all before the swing happens so you don't have to have any extra swing thoughts in your head. Just set up and then do your normal swing.
Great video Keep up the good work
funny thing matt is my hands were too high and the ball would just spin left 100+ yards. This was after I fixed my wrist hinge and takeaway to not turn over, but on longer irons and drives I was choking up a ton and being too high hands I think. Especially since Im doing wrist hinge first on the takeaway for the sequence it exaggerated my inside out swing. I will try to keep this in mind still and not get too low
I tend to pay real close attention to my lie angle every time I set up to the ball. I'm still learning and I've noticed I need to do this to to get my distance to the ball right. Upside is that it also forces you to get your hands in the same position, so I'm guessing good lie angle = good hand height :)
I didn't even know I had this problem until watching your video. I'm 5'8 and of course, hands hanging, athletic position, feeling like it's all good but then end up being inconsistent. I have a cup in my left wrist that I've always noticed but figured it was normal. Also, being a bigger guy I figured the feeling of the chest being tucked in was normal as well. Another note is the "coming out of the ball" which is what I've noticed myself naturally doing which now I'm assuming is because I was already too low to begin with and my body is adjusting to not smash the ground. So hopefully this will allow me to feel like my chest isn't tucked in as well as allowing more rotation without fear of smashing the ground.
Dude. you just made my day! I have been fighting a cup right hand forever. Cannot wait to start practicing. You earned a sub and I need to find where the hell are you? :) All the best!
Excellent video, thanks. Looks like a simple swing tip to try out without overdoing the mechanics. As for your "who swings their driver 100mph and carries 225", that'd be me....
This is good info. The question I have is, what if you have your clubs fit in a flat position? My irons are all 2 degrees flat.
