As someone who used to skate on the shittiest terrains possible, I could probably make it across this quite easily. It's all about how you brace yourself and position the board (or skis). Gotta put slightly more weight on the back with a half lean. That's how I would avoid being thrown off my board when running into a pile of rocks and pebbles

Winter Park - Colorado USA. Something known as "The Spring Splash" is what started the whole "water ski on your snow skies" competition. Been going on for probably 50 years at this point.

This should be an Olympic Event & You have to make your own Costume 😂

It kind of seems like this would be EASIER than it seems to be, given that people on waterskis or wakeboards (or surfboards) seem to be able to easily ride on water... BUT: snowboards and snow skis have camber and sidecut that are designed to have their edges in contact with the surface and to turn with their edges, rather than turning by deflection with the surface of the board, whereas those designed for water have rocker and are wider at the middle than at the ends. So, snow skis and boards naturally want to dive into the water- they've been designed to dig into the surface rather than to ride on top. Although... Some skis DO have (full length) rocker and positive sidecut- Shane McConkey pioneered and designed snow skis built like trad water skis, not for water, but for riding deep powder. The tradeoff was that they are very hard to ride on packed snow, and even on pow use a very different style/skill for turning (deflection turning)... I tried a pair once, and, TBH, they kinda sucked. (Or I did. Prob a little of both.) (And I am a decent wakeboard/ waterski rider and surfer, and a very experienced snow skier and snowboarder. I also am a competent telemark and cross-country skier- I can't even imagine how impossible trying to ride the latter two ski styles/techniques on water would be! ...And, I've tried riding a surfboard, a 6'8" widebody fishtail by BYBs, on/in deep powder and it actually worked pretty well and was a ton of fun... but on anything remotely packed, it may as well have been a cheap kid's sled😅. A pal tried a longboard/funshape with similar results) Love watching this, as usual. That's some good schadenfreude😂!

I think the problem is that, most of them started leaning forward as they go. The key is to lean back at the right angle and simply let the acceleration push you through the surface. That's exactly what the girl who succeeded did.

Finally, that person at the end was the only one who knew how to lean back

A long since closed Irish family owned ski area used to do this for st. Patrick’s day every year. Green snow, green beer, green slush jump! Sadly I wasn’t old enough to participate in the festivities when I was younger and my bones didn’t break on a fly landing on them😂

I could see the difficulty. Youre transferring from something relatively soft, smooth to glide on, onto something with lots more resistance and non solid. Still pretty cool thinking about that guy learned his lesson and shifted his center of balance perfectly

It is a fine weight balance that allows you to skip the water, and the dropping transition does not make it any easier!

The key is slowly leaning back as the speed slows because of increased resistance

To my knowledge, the trick is to lean the ski/snowboard back. Why? Once you are going at a speed that fast, the water will create a wave in front. If the skis/board dips below or at the same level of it, they will follow the water causing it to dip down (hence why they all fell forward). All of this is an ASSUMPTION no science or facts to back me up

The last guy knows how to control his board to float. You can see he raised the front just before hitting to water just enough to surf his way over. Clearly played attention to physics class and didn't try to brute force his way to the finish like the first few 😂

One thing everybody keeps falling to the cold water is they keep push themselves in the cold water rather than lift the ski a little bit higher like throwing a rock that can skip to the water.

At the A basin pond skim last year, there was actually a jump about 2/3 of the way through, which was way cooler. Saw one guy do a flip off of it!
