Neuroscience, Synchronicity, and the Awakened Brain - Dr Lisa Miller, PhD

Dr Miller is a New York Times bestselling author and Professor of Clinical Psychology at Columbia University.
She is the Founder and Director of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program and research institute in spirituality and psychology. Her innovative research has been published in more than one hundred peer-reviewed articles in leading journals.
Dr Miller’s 2021 book: The Awakened Brain explores the neuroscience of spirituality and offers a bold new paradigm for human flourishing.
In this lively and wide ranging conversation, we explore:
- The neuroscience of the “awakened brain”
- To what extent we can say that spirituality is innate in human nature
- The scientific evidence for what Carl Jung referred to as “synchronicity”
- How spirituality and depression may be two sides of the same coin and why depression may be viewed as a “call to awakening”.
And more.

This is the most amazing woman who has brought me back to the light. I just stumbled upon this in the midst of some darker days due to some physical and emotional ailments. After several years of losing all my 3 siblings, my father and mother as well as my only son. I worked in the field of light with those In difficult transitions but have been so set back, I did not think I could ever get back. Listening to this has brought me back and I now have the resolve to do what I need to do to stay connected and get back up to spread the love and light in the capacity that I am led to do so. My deepest gratitude to you two for this phenomenal opportunity.❤

Rereading A Christmas Carol, i see Scrooge's loveless childhood unfold, his protective choice as a young msn, the pain of working thru it all one Christmas Eve, the resulting joy. In solitude my body rebuilt itself while, I experienced an intuitive connection, that had me considering, modalities that when letting go and surrendering to the voice, simply carrying out the deep felt positive suggestions. I agree with your view of depression as a catalyst for personal growth. I think it is sad that we live in a society that seems to glorify stagnation (under the label of "stability"). I know many examples of friends who have been told to take pills for their depression, rather than clearing up the actual cause of the depression... because that would mean making major life changes, and therefore rocking the boat. I have been severely depressed two times in my life. The first time was as a child, when I was being bullied at school. The issue was resolved by moving to another school. The second time was as an adult, when I was in a toxic marriage. The issue was resolved by leaving the marriage. And this has also led to a major spiritual awakening, which is improving my life in every way. To me, it's not that complicated...

Great interview. Your bravery in sharing your vulnerability and experience of synchrinicity gives me cobfidence to share one of mine. Years ago i was on a hill in the outback of australia it was night time , i was on the phone to my now ex who was at home with our son, i was on the hill becajse it was the only way i could get any signal out the rural regions of australia. We were going through a break up , the sky was so beautiful and filled with stars , i took a moment of complete desperation and asked "is there something there? Show me there is something there because i feel it but i dont know if its real" i said this ik my head with my phone to my ear and as i began to start talking i heard a pop and rip and my shadow began to form and i looked up and this meteor hurtled throught the sky and lit up the hill like it was day time i watched it over my head and i even heard it cool down and continue speeding and spinning to the earth. ( there was one person back at camp that seen it too and was glad i coukd verify it also as nobody else believed them) Fast forward approx 6 years to recently (i never knew who my father was and found him this year but thats a whole other story but thats where things started revealing themselves ) Ive been experimenting and studying how my perceptions can effect the quantum field and instead of manifesting its more like everything alresdy exists but the intention in oerception guides us to whats already there. I reflected and spoke to my partner sbout my experience on the hill and how significant it was for me. Then i jokingly spoke the words " ok universe put your money where your mouth is and show me that you are in fact here and aware of me " had a laugh then grabbed the dog lead and took the doggo for a walk and thought nothing of it. Well i was definitely made the fool on this one because id asked for another confirmation and then didnt even bother to look up , i just got home and sat on the couch with my oartner for the night. I go to put on some youtube and i get a message from a friend saying "hey did you see the meteor shower ?" With a video attached I watched the video and it was the most amazing light show over top my city of melbourne , as i was watching it i realised what it was and i began crying because i knew what this was and i felt so loved and connected because i was inside , so the only way i could be shown the sign is by making it a huge meteor shower so then it would be on youtube for me to see instead. Thats when i took real notice and my life has been a daily occuremce of miracles and meanjng and joy but also growth and guidance from the greater source. It was the perseid meteor shower. Which was expected by cosmologists and like , i didnt manifest it , but i also didnt know about it , but to ask for a sign the same as the one i got years ago on that hill only to have that happen on the exact same night i asked? Pffft i cant calculate that as simple probability and i wont and havent ignored the signs ever since. Thsnkyou for your existence snd work and i send my love to you and your kin ❤

Wow, that must have felt amazing :) How do you translate these big experiences to the everyday life of little more or less (in)significant occurences though? Is it something that has to be learned and practiced? If so, what's the method? I tried to skew my perception towards seeing more good signs but honestly couldn't sustain it for longer periods of time. The rational/analytical/neutral part of me always comes on top somehow even though my intention was to maintain a slighlty optimistic outlook. Just curious if you have any advice.

Miller everything including you two that brought this video to the Forefront looking up many of the comments I'm not the only one who is thrilled with this video and dr. Miller I just want to put in my two cents the most thrilling for me of this video is that where science has finally arrived is where logistic has lived me the 65 years now and whatever space and time other than now the amount of objective truth in realities in this video is out standing for me dr. Miller you are an encouragement especially for example the truth of depression and non depression or happiness and sadness how they are impertinently a part of each other and both as important like wet and dry and dark and light these are the kinds of perception that have frustrated and choked me these 65 years also your objective criticism of the upcoming generation it's really good to hear somebody as educated as you say the truth of that reality also I'm tired of the older Generations not recognizing the flowers that have bloomed out of so much of the mess that was made regardless after all it is the Scout and all the rest of the bacteria in the ground that germinate the seeds because logically to me I don't need any proof or any science if I follow the logic I got most places that the science has now arrived I didn't need proof especially logic made it clear to me that there was no such thing as absolute proof so to search it out was like following my own tail anyway thank you thank you thank you especially dr. Miller for all your hard work every step you make this is a wonderful piece of work and so are you thank you for your service to Sacred Space affectionately Leah, Gem and Ailistarr❤

This was amazing! I have always marvelled at synchronicity, but have never considered it from this perspective. I always thought it was more ESP or manifestation, this angle makes it even more exciting. In a way we manifest through synchronicity, as in when we put something we desire out there, a serious or synchronous events generally would need to happen in order for the manifestation to come into existence. There is so much food for thought here

  • @pipwhitefeather5768

Fantastic conversation. I feel validated in my - what some would call - imaginative experiences but they are real. I had a profoundly supportive synchronicity recently, after the event, I knew they occurred to assure me that it would be fine, and that I shouldn't despair. It really did help enormously, and now after a brief dip, I'm fully reconnecting with my Soul Self, which was helped no end by the reassurance from this synchronicity. I use Tarot cards to help me communicate with my soul, one can have deep conversations that help to understand what's behind our behaviour and experiences, where we are stuck and how to shift it etc. Thank you so much, I've listened before but it had a deeper impact second time round, perhaps due to my 'need to shift depression' that was threatening. Namaste 🙏

Their senses are better than ours but we also have advantages for them. If you want to get closer to animals choose to communicate and learn from them. I love birds (my little dinosaurs I call them). I feed a wild crested dove from my hands, he totally trusts me now. Tried to save a magpie's chick out of the nest. I call to the bird around. This is for years. I go for a walk , so many see me and greet me. It is rare for humans not to have birds around them. They all know I am a freind. There is a biofield of species, esp birds. The Great Mind of the Cosmos... and we are it too. 🙏❤

I think so long as we don't dismiss belief as "irrational", sooner or later it comes to us. And compassion isn't merely sentimental, it helps us to understand the hardness of life - greed, poverty, war, crime, injustice - and to see what we might do to remedy it. 🤔 NB: Seeing this Idealism overtaking the Young in the Sixties, our Rulers eventually concocted NeroLiberalism - "Greed is Good", "Consume Or Die" etc. - to put a stop to it. 👺(Green Fire, UK) 🌈🦉

I entirely agree with you. Neoliberalism, with it's "There Is No Alternative" (TINA) is the very antithesis of the vital concept of human progress. Human progress means, as Professor Miller suggests, the widening and deepening of our personal and collective humanity. From that base, real, true, responsible progress in every other field of human activity and endeavour will arise.

Though quantum entanglements are nonlocal and simultaneous, it seems incomplete. In contrast, this non-local and simultaneous power has intention and requires benevolence to work. Perhaps quantum influence is the wiring, but alignment and an awakened mind are the generators. I agree, Dan, it is fascinating research ready for a breakthrough.

The question for me is how do we reconnect kids to nature? It’s disheartening that there is such a disconnect and it’s growing. Eckhardt states that the most important thing to achieve in life is to transcend the conditioned dimension of consciousness. As do the great ancient sages and saints. Finding and serving “god” is the number one goal. God being this consciousness that you are aspiring to here. ❤

"Finding Meaning" is not a solo endeavor. It occurred to me that the search for meaning is all inclusive. Take into consideration all life, all living beings. What is your place & function amongst all? Maybe that is why focusing on breath is so key.

It's hard to take someone seriously when they claim that animals are always looking out for each other. Not that it doesn't happen - there are plenty of examples of reciprocal altruism between individuals of the same species as well as other species. I did an independent project as an undergrad for an ethology class on interspecific cooperation in urban birds. But -- it is also true that nature can sometimes be 'red in tooth and claw', even within family groups. Sibling cannibalism is a thing. Also, shoebills (don't look up their parenting habits unless you want to get bummed out).

When doing the exercise where you invite someone to sit at your table I really don't know who to invite. The way she naturally assumes that it would be an easy choice makes me think that most people don't have any problem thinking of someone to sit down with them. I wish there was some guidance on this part. Who did you invite to sit down with you?

Connectivity , synchronicity and awareness. The awakened brain , two states, dormancy and activity. Docile or excited. Synchronicity is the awakened brain in it's docile status. Meanwhile connectivity is the awakened brain in it's excited status.

I watch this at 5555 views after sseing 77 and 777 for weeks now. The universe ist talking to me through numbers for years now. I love Jung's teachings on synchronicity and the collective unconscious. His works are definitely worth studying. There is more than what we think we know. When you are alone and ask questions in "nothingness", there is suddenly an answer in a very special and subtle way that not everyone recognizes. It's a language you have to learn first. As Jung in his later years I am getting more and more into occult teachings. But that's also because the material world just gets too boring at a certain point...🤠

❤ Greetings from India 🥰 🙏 A fascinating deeply insightful conversation which teaches us how spirituality is the most important for real evolution not only for humanity but for the whole planet and the entire Universe. It is the materialistic science and consumerism world that destroyed the human consciousness. Everything comes from God Source Spiritual Cosmic Intelligence and all creations are transmitted and sublimed into the Source. I resonate totally with this lecture as I myself am very integrated into both Spirituality and Science in a holistic manner and always strive to live in a balanced way with both material and spiritual aspects of Life! All humans should take lessons from this video and awake to their innate consciousness to develop into complete healthy holistic soul individuals connected to Nature and Universe as whole! This is real wisdom than that is taught in mechanical clinical psychology and superficial psychotherapy which don't really help in soul evolution!Love Blessings To All 🌼🧘‍♀️
