It's not THAT expensive though. It's 8 grand basically. Have you looked at the price of vintage 47s lately? They're around 30 grand. Clone companies like Telefunken USA charge 11 grand for their copy of the 251 so 8 grand for the original article is not that bad. Nord charge $5700 for their new Stage 4 digital piano for example. Or if you're a guitarist you'll pay 5 grand for a Les Paul. Again, comparatively it's not bad. It's affordable ultimately. Not cheap but within reach. I bought a U67 reissue and couldn't be happier though. If 8 grand is too much then you can grab a U67, which is amazing, for about 6. Great times for microphone lovers.
@revevague6256
Жыл бұрын
@@Screaming-Trees it's a beautiful mic but 8.5 grand goes a long way for most folks towards a down payment on a house or paying off 25% of your student loans, if you have an average amount of student loan debt (35k-40k)...

@Screaming-Trees

@@revevague6256 Sure. If you're a student or are saddled with student debt or other kind of debt this microphone is a bridge too far probably. But if you're a professional cutting records this new Neumann line is really a life saver. Being able to pick up a U67 for around 6 grand is incredible. Rewind back just a few years and basically the situation was a complete disaster. If you wanted a Neumann tube mic there was nothing. You had to go vintage which even at the time was hovering around 30 grand (about half that for U67). I would say the situation has not just improved it has been addressed completely. Had Neumann not done this you'd be faced with a grim reality we've all been faced with for the last however many years since they stopped production of these. Basically you would have paid off your debt and then you'd have to buy a vintage Neumann for 30 or 40 or even 50 grand. Not a persuasive argument if you're in debt already (having to spend 8 grand I mean) but rewind just a couple of years and you'll see it was much, much worse. Completely untenable. But yeah if you're a student or have student debt this is not the microphone for you mate. If you're a pro cutting records though that's another matter.
Alec again, I came here for your music. I have now come to a conclusion you will sound great also in a 20€ microphone. Cause your not just a great musician but a brilliant sound engineer. Keep it going. PS: the Neumann mic sounds brilliant too.

Steve perry used this style of mic... It has so much taste to it. Luxury vocal with flavour. What a cool video ive never sang into a mic of this value before in my career. Id love to hear this on my song rain i sold to funimation studio's. I did final record on a sony mic which felt lifeless until mix occured. Which could have been a plus. But i like flavored mics best. You will or may hear my track in an upcomming animated film im not legallly able yet until released speak on. 🎉

Alec, I’ve got an idea. Why don’t you get a pair of them and live in a tent? Quick question. Do you feel that the microphone colours the sound or would you say it’s “honest”? From what I can tell it sounds warm and not overhyped in the top end. Thanks for the vid!
@alecbrits
Жыл бұрын
Hey Tim! :D I would agree with the tent statement if I was living somewhere a little warmer. It’s coloured, but not hyped I would say. It’s not as clean as something like a TLM107, but at the same time it did not feel as coloured as the U67 does. A flattering version of honest perhaps is the best way I can describe it.
Recently purchased a matched pair of these. They are absolutely stunning and live up to every bit of the hype, and more. The amazing thing is that every source you record with them comes back sounding like a more euphoric version of itself. Instruments that sound good in a room somehow sound better than they do in real life when played back through the monitors, while still maintaining incredible accuracy. Have you had the opportunity to switch the S4 switch inside? I’m contemplating doing that to mine and it would be interesting to hear the sonic differences.
@alecbrits
Жыл бұрын
Congratulations on the purchase! :) I did not know about the switch inside. Let me know if you find a difference. :)
@OwensDrumming
Жыл бұрын
@@alecbrits will do! The S4 switch inside removes the high pass filter from the circuit (disables the negative feedback) and slightly changes the impedance the tube sees. According to Klaus Heyne, it sweetens the midrange a bit and makes the new tube respond nearly identical to an AC701. There’s also another switch called S2, which sets the mic in cardioid only and disables the remote polar pattern selector. It gives a small boost in output and increases the signal to noise ratio by 4db
Not my favourite on all sources but the spoken voice and vocal - wow it sounds wonderful.

FYI: Neumann did not "ditch" the original Tuchel connector for a "modern-style" connector, but uses the exact same form factor and connector type used on all M(2)49 delivered to the German broadcast system in the 1960s. I.e. the mic can be operated with any original 1960s seven-conductor M2xx cable and vice versa.

Bro great content! What are your thoughts on the sonic differences between the M49V & U67? Are you going to make a comparison video?
@alecbrits
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Alexander! :) I won’t be making that comparison any time soon, as the M49 is already sent back. They are quite different to each other. The 67 feels like it’s a touch darker to my ears, but in no way muted on the top. The M49 feels more linear and open, but not hyped at all.
Lovely review! Like the vibe of your demo songs. I own a Bock 507, and was wondering how the m49 compares to that one?
@alecbrits

Oh wow! The 507 is an incredible piece of kit. I tried it once a long time ago, so I cannot give you a solid opinion about that.
Fantastic review, as usual! I've a suggestion - not sure how practicable it might be, but I think it'll be super helpful: would it be possible for you to run some gear like mics through a few preamps just to see how they pair? Maybe by singing one line or even just speaking into the mic with a few preamps. As an example I'd have been absolutely delighted to hear what this sounds like with the Neve 1073 DPX (which I understand you have) or the API Preamp. :) Totally understand that this may not be possible though!
@alecbrits
Жыл бұрын
Hey Axay! :) I would have to figure out an elegant way to do that without taking too much time really. Most people seem to react best with as little gear options as possible in a video from my experience so far. But I think that kind of specific content could work well as a separate video on a live stream/or Patreon style content in the future.

This is the only microphone I have no trouble putting it in my list for a entire studio setup that's over £2000... I have has a good feeling about it and that has always proven right in this review also. the mission with it is learning the preamp selection for different sources and different vocals... that being that each vocal is it's own completely new instrument, and why the vocals are always my favourite thing to record. I might now just resign myself to keeping this in the list as my key investment. Two of them? that's a bit out of imagination for now 😂

Alec your music is so awesome brother and so is your humor !!! For this price point Neumann should have made a better thicker cable for sure, also the Neumann case is flimsy which is a slap in the face for this price. I did a cable test for my vintage u67 and there was a big difference between the UC5 cable (thin and congested) versus the original Belden cable with the tuchel connectors which sounded wide open and clear. Nothing new that Neumann offers can beat the vintage classic microphones in my opinion
