Networking Week: OSPF Stub, Totally-Stub, NSSA and Totally-NSSA

A large part of understanding the operation of OSPF, and being able to troubleshoot the protocol, is being able to identify the different types of OSPF AREA’s and how they are used to optimize your network infrastructure. In this webinar you’ll learn about the OSPF Stubby Areas, OSPF Totally Stubby Areas, OSPF NSSA Areas, and OSPF Totally NSSA Areas. You will also learn what LSA’s are received within these OSPF Area types. You’ll learn about which routers create these LSAs, why they are created, and how to search for them within the OSPF Database. You will also learn how to configure these OSPF Area types. Whether you work with OSPF in your existing network, or are learning about OSPF for certification purposes, this webinar will prove to be highly valuable to you.
The best way to become an expert, is to learn from one. INE continues to advance that philosophy, applying it to the digital age, and cultivating tomorrow’s leaders. Be part of a process that has worked for centuries. Find your path today: ine.com/pages/networking

I'll admit I'm asking this question without getting all the way thru the video yet. But if you can't have an ASBR inside a Stub Area then how is an LSA Type 7 ever generated when it comes from an ASBR in a NSSA Area? Because you state that one of the rules of OSPF is that an ASBR can't be in a Stub Area.

This demonstrates the power of images and diagrams when explaining things. Very well explained in shortest way and detailed. Someone would need to really experiment with routers and then understand which would time consuming, loved it.

Until watching this webinar , i was thinking i caught the point with LSAs and how they work but after watching this video , i realized i actually didn't know well how LSAs were functional across the OSPF domain...That was the best video i've ever seen over OSPF multi-area topic which is indeed complicated . Thank you Rohit !

Just coming across searching find out this video and mind blowing knowledge you have 5x CCIE what an inspiration, I will check if you have courses on your channel, again the way you simplified the giant, you truly are an EXPERT ❤ Just a question when we talk about within an Area like Cisco says area can have atmost 50 routers so where can we assume this senario, first picture comes on a data center rack, racks where you can say same broadcast domain but even within area routers can be geographically seperated, let's says between cities? So how you say that, any comments please, thanks

Rihot if you still follow up on these comments I have a question. You stated that type 2 LSAs are not prefix information. When I drill down into the the LSAs with the " show ip ospf database {router | network} commands I see something different. For the LSA type 1s I only see prefix information for point-to-point links. For all the other links that are transit networks I see their prefix information in the type 2 lsa. Did I misunderstand what you meant by all the odd LSA types being prefix information and type 2 not being prefix information? Also anyone else that sees this if you cam clarify for me please feel free to. I'm just looking for clarification. Respectfully Anthony

Excellent teaching, does routers in broadcast segment generate LSA type 1 or only LSA type 2 or both LSAs ??

It only generates type 2 LSA, if the network is a part of larger area it will also generate LSA3.

without OSPF summarization will LSA get flooded to another area outside the local area ? anyone ?

  • @0061hrishi

Summarization: by this if you are meaning the Type 3 LSA, then it is created by the ABR and with this the other Area get to know about the routes of other area. LSA type 1 resides in only in the local area to carry that information out ABR creates a Type 3 LSA. Could I answer your question. N.B: As per my knowledge LSA 1, LSA 2, and for NSSA LSA 7 does not leave their respective areas.

It's the backbone. You don't want to block 4/5 LSA's on the backbone because it's the backbone's job to spread LSA across the ospf domain.

Because its core of OSPF network, it’s basically interconnects areas between each other, so there is no need to make it stubby

Why call LSA Type 3 a Summary LSA if it doesn't list all the Network Prefixes in one LSA? If Area 2 in his example has 10 Network Prefixes to advertise then sending 10 different LSA Type 3s into Area 0 isn't a Summary it's a waste of network traffic. Send 1 LSA Type 3 listing all 10 Prefixes and you'd generate less traffic. Just my opinion.
