Netflix's FMA Movie is a Dumpster Fire. Here's Why.

Фильм және анимация

Live action Fullmetal Alchemist is an abomination that could give Shou Tucker's best work a run for its money. And it's so bad precisely because it tries too hard to give fans what they think they want.

i think the biggest problem is the movie itself. Anime series aren't made to be adapted into movies. Especially such a long series. Its not possible to fit these events into a 2hr movie. If they created a movie that maybe wasn't canon to the story, or maybe was a spin off version, it would be new and would give the writers ability to create a in depth story that is made for a movie

Not trying to get into racial stuff, I know that anime is an eastern thing. However, Ed and most of the characters are from a European equivalent background. Scar should be from a middle-eastern background, and those from Shing should be Asian. If we call out eastern movies for white-washing roles, then we should probably do so for filling every role with Asian people in anime films.

  • @Catamount1412

Like with AoT, this is especially indefensible precisely because these people are very strongly implied to be not-Asian. In FMA it's never explicitly stated where they are in comparison to the "real world"; it's just stated that the two worlds are the same place historically diverged at the point when Alchemy became a dominant force in one of them, but given that both Ed and Al live in Europe when Ed goes through the portal, it's reasonably to assume that that's also where they reside, give or take, in their own world. In FMAB, it's made very clear that they're not Asian because they're an Asian country involved and that's a major plotpoint. In fact the differences in people and culture get highlighted when Ling literally puts on a stereotypical Asian routine at one point to get out of getting in trouble.

NO, we CANNOT. The most accurate was Alexander. ps Hughes takes 2nd place. pps I actually thought the casting was really good in this (NOT the acting, just the casting). Nothing straight out of the manga/anime, but the appearances did somehow have the feel of the character they were supposed to depict. Except Envy. I have no idea how they could take an absolute extract of adorable androgyny that is Kanata and make him uglier, bulkier and more masculine. just WHY, that goes against everything that is Envy...

11:08 Honestly, I was never quite sure what to think of Shou Tucker even in the original. Yes, the way the story unfolds, you're supposed to see that he's getting increasingly desperate and worried about his job security. However, as I understood it, he only qualified as a State Alchemist in the first place because he turned his wife into a chimera. That suggests to me that he was always a monster who'd simply learned to hide it well. I kind of thought his big speech to Ed was more about thinking (because he's crazy) that as a fellow alchemist Ed might understand his warped sense of morality in a way that the rest of the world didn't.

Its too big and deep of a story to summarize in a quick 2 hour movie. It was made as an anime for a reason. It had the length that it did for a reason. So rather than fit iconic moments from an iconic series into a movie so fans could see those moments through a new medium and a wider audiance could get introduced to those moments and the series as a whole through that new medium, you'd rather try and fit in a movie that's devisive amongst even the fans of the original series and is quite possibly the thing that strayed the farthest from the author's work out of everything in the franchise? Seems legit.

ApavTech in the context that your family would watch a foreign film based on Anime, which is even more niche than actual Anime, I think it would still be best to explain how the animated show is of much higher quality than the movie, and then sprinkle in some of the usual selling points about Anime for adults, studio ghibli, media not being age specific etc. Basically: if your family wants to watch a low budget live action adaptation of an Anime, but don't want to watch the Anime itself, then they are beyond reason.

I've been actively avoiding watching this video for two years now due to the fact that the very thought of this movie existing sends me into a blind rage, but for some reason Gluttony's waddling set to a trombone made me laugh so hard I cried. Thanks Geoff, looks like I'll be able to get through this video after all!

Tbh I liked how Alfonse looked in the movie, just looked like an actual suit of armor, but that’s basically the only thing I liked about it lmao

How dare the writers cut out some of the most memorable characters in the series like Ed and Al's teacher, Scar, Fuhrer Bradley, Kimblee and Greed!

Greed.... I was really looking forward to Greed..... /pout/ Now, I'm scared that they'll do a sequel, toss him in, and ruin it.

Conrad Kujur Well to be honest its basically impossible to adapt 60+ ep or 20+ Vol of manga into like a 150 min movie. Not saying they couldn't have done a much better job. But still you can't have all the characters from the series in this movie and expect them to get any sort of major time on screen or character development. Plus I'm sure budget prevented them from doing such things as Envy's true form and things like that. Even with all its faults it still did some things well such as the Tucker storyline pretty much being exactly what it was in the manga. Other then the fact of him coming back in the end. Due to their being no Scar to kill him.

Can we talk about how much of a sociopath Roy seemed like in this movie? He looked so utterly dead inside in almost every scene. It’s like they said “we’re going to take the way Roy acts when he “kills” Maria Ross and just make that his personality for the whole movie” and then they still had the audacity to give him the big heroic fight at the end after giving us little to no reason to actually care about him. In fact, Roy is so soulless in this movie that I would have had no trouble believing that he actually DID kill Hughes, never mind that we don’t get to see him grieve his friend at ALL in favor of a stupid plot twist.
