it's late to say but Love to watch it. if Satoru not end up with that teacher Gaku in the car surely Satoru end up married with Kayo, Satoru find other way to solve the case and not end up drowned and laying in bed for 15 years, for sure kayo not end up with Hiromi the Chance's is high but it's a big no-no to author haha it's good to see in the end Airi and Satoru met.

kevin if watch a video on it, basically a thing from early in the series which fades out of main focus becomes the main focus of the ending when it shouldn’t have been and it played out quite weirdly

kevin the ending undid everything the whole last season set up. In fact the whole series was building up as to one particular day, the whole last season revolves around that day, then the last episode downplays that day and how it wasn't actually important. The ending is so unsatisfying, It was my favorite show when it was on, but the ending made me never want to watch it again. It's such a slap in the face. Almost all fans of the show agreed that it was a bad ending that the show had to make a new edited ending that isn't as good either, but not as bad as what they gave you.

Erased ending is not bad, Satoru never “loved” kayo as he was a 29 year old man trying to save an 11 year old girl. He did care about her, but not in a romantic way because he just wanted to save her. She might have loved him but it would not matter as he went into a coma for 15 years. In that time you can’t expect her to wait for him as they don’t even know if he’ll wake up. She is an adult and can have her own life too. Y’all need to realize that

This!! I never read the manga or anything and the fact they didn't end up together was a really good thing for me. He was a 29 year old trying to save a child. Period. It doesn't matter if he was in a 10 year old body, he was an adult trying to save a kid's life, them ending up together would be hella weird. It genuinely made me happy to see they made her end up with someone else

I feel like there's a difference between bad ending and BAD ending. Bad endings are rushed and not the quality you expect given what came before. BAD endings recontextualize the entire story in a very negative way. Really, not just endings but twists or sections too. The retroactive component is important.

Reminds me of Usagi Drop. I really hated that ending, and tried watching the anime trying to ignore the manga,b ut once you know, it's pretty painful. Like "i can't believe the writer wrote such wholesome father daughter moments like this and still continued to make the ending where they end up together".

I suppose it depends on how important the ending is, if the whole show is all prep work for the conclusion, then yeah. But if something like Black Lagoon, if it ends, has a bad ending. Then it doesn't really mater as each arc was a self contained story, so it could be considered only one bad part.

I wanted to pretend like Airi wasn’t a love interest because it grossed me out. A 16 year old with someone who’s 28 (I think) is so gross. It makes me feel so uncomfortable

My only issue with erased was the 15 year coma. Seeing him reconnect with his friends was cool but it felt wrong. I felt like despite 15 years passing the only thing that changed was the characters appearances. People can drastically change in just one year so I find it preposterous that after going through puberty they’re personality hardly changes a bit.

This is just my opinion but i just on't see it that way: Satoru did not save Kayo (+ the other 2, that's already something that people should consider) becase he wanted to BE with her, she was NOT his love interest. He wanted to save her because originally she had seen her, one of her classmates, alone and emotionless, and then she disappeared and was foung dead, along with another two girls who were in the same institution, plus getting his close mentor, Jun "Yuuki" Shiratori, convicted of the murder of said girls. He was tormented ever since by the fact that he had seen this abandoned girl that died days later, and he believed he could have done something. When he got the chance to, he became determined go give these people their lives back, to save the abandoned girl, to get his innocent mentor out of his unjust predicament, to have no regrets about having stood by and done nothing. He cared about Kayo, because he knew she had her life taken "on his watch", he wanted her, and all people involved to actually HAVE and LIVE a life. I think if i had lost 15 years of my life to give another girl hers, only to find she had thrown 15 years in the garbage can waiting for me, i would be rather furious; i would probably feel as is my efforts had been negated by the girl i saved. I know this is quite a sloppy way to put things, i'm not particularly good at writing thesis about themes of humanity. Nevertheless, i would like to know what are your thoughts.

Instead he _gives in_ and then they talk about him getting her _pregnant,_ and viola, the rest of the series has been completely ruined forever and turned into an utterly creepy loli-grooming "raise your own wife" fetish insert story. It is NOT "cute," and the fact that you think it's "cute" truly disturbs me. I honestly hope you never foster or adopt children or become a teacher, because this is the kind of thinking that leads to you taking advantage of the kids in your care and making excuses for why it's "okay."

Am I the only one who's actually happy with the ending? It's true that I really wanted to see Satoru and Kayo together but this wasn't Satoru's plan. His plan was to save these 4 people, and he managed to do it. He also became a mangaka, and that was his dream. I don't really see a problem with the ending. Also, it's not necessary that you'll wake up from a coma so I don't think Kayo was like "Yeah, let's wait for him to wake up. I won't continue my life until he wakes up" This way, the ending is more realistic. But that's just my opinion.

Actually, I was satisfied that Kayo got to live in the future. But her role in the last 2 eps was kinda small, I mean in the manga her role was different, and the anime she had a bigger role, so all it’d take was for her to contribute in exposing the murderer since Satoru helped her the most, same thing that Kenya and Hiromi did for Satoru in the finale. I just wished Kayo get to return Satoru the favour instead of just a “thank you!”, considering how he saved her from her previous fate.

I personally really liked the ending of Erased, I mean Airi and Satoru meet again! Satoru went to the past just to fix all the things, while we all knew that Airi really liked Satoru... I mean it ends well for all of them all together! (And if you fell he wasted his life years being in a coma, don't forget that he has already lived those life years earlier before time travel thingy)

To paraphrase the Mysterious Mr. Enter: Endings don't change what came before, but they can make you see it in a different context. The context of "This show ends great," "this show had a terrible ending," and "this show was cancelled before it could end" lead to vastly different viewing experiences, even if they logically shouldn't. Anime, like all fiction, is human on a fundamental level. It's made by humans, for humans, to engage with the most human parts of them. It's not always logical.

Some endings are bad enough that you question why you ever got invested in the series in the first place, that's why the ending can ruin the entire show. If One Piece ended with Luffy choking to death on a hotdog it wouldn't make the rest of the series terrible, but it would obliterate any reason to care about the overarching story. Why invest hundreds of hours of your life to watch it all end in a meaningless anticlimax?

While a horrible ending won't ruin rest of it, it will ruin your impression of it. Most people will not watch a show again or play the game again if the ending sucks, hell they don't even if its good - they will move on,but last impressions are what will be remembered. Its what you think of when someone you know asks you about your opinion if to recommend or not.

The ending showed how Satoru’s efforts helped his friends move on and live their lives. He didn’t do the things he did for himself, he did it for them. Also for all y’all saying that he loved her when they were kids weren’t paying attention. He never loved her. Sure he felt some type of way since he was in his 11/12 year old body, but he never loved her. She might of loved him but she moved on from her crush. So chill out

It kinda cements the character as a very successful hero, which is rather unexpected in a more realistic setting. He sacrificed himself to grant his friends a brighter future and it worked.

I just finished watching Erased, and honestly, the ending didn't bother me.

yeah i liked it too. it was more selfless than "im saving you so we can hook up" besides, kayo and the guy she ended up with were both murder victims that he saved who went on to create another life that wouldn't have been. Much sweeter in my opinion. I will admit they needed a little longer to really flesh out the ending but I wouldn't call it bad at all

AshesToBurn they should’ve just had a time slip with Kayo and Him because, the actual pairing of Hiromi and Kayo is so confusing it made no sense. There are so many things that could’ve made this ending better.

Am I the only one who felt like the ending to Erased was bad, not because of it not being a murder-mystery or Satoru not ending up with best girl, but because the villain wasn't fleshed out enough for it to work? It went from "oh let's take this harmless drive into a lake" to him being completely obsessed with Satoru for no real reason. If we got to see what happened after he was kidnapped, or develop Yashiro's villain side more, then I think the roof scene would have been better. Them being up there talking about how they couldn't live without each other was more weird and creepy to me than I think the show meant it to be. Then there came the "this was my plan all along" monologue, which is enough to deserve an honorary eye roll each time it's used. Especially when the show doesn't clue the audience into this, just to make it more "surprising" or "shocking". I still recommend Erased to other people, but the ending did sort of diminish it overall.

I loved the ending especially after kayo started a family. I cried so much when saturo cried of happiness, sure he didn’t know it yet at the time but all his hard work came to fruition and he saved his friends life and allowed her to have a happy life with a child of her own, and become the mother she never had. Like yeah no I don’t ship the 29 year old with the 11 year old.

It depends on the ending. If it’s just underwhelming, you can still appreciate all of the things that came before. If it blatantly undermines everything that came before, then yes, you’re well within your rights to argue it’s been ruined.

I agree. To use an example from this very season, Land of the Lustrous is an overall fantastic show that I would heartily recommend, but the last episode doesn't really... end anything. Obviously the show is concluding in the middle of an ongoing manga so a full conclusion isn't possible, but the last episode is full of things that just kind of... happen. It's moving the pieces into place for the next story rather than giving a sense of closure for the story we've been watching. I'd still very much recommend it though, despite being book-ended by the two worst episodes of the series.

Android 19 Nah, it had a satisfactory ending where it had the completion of phos development arc until that moment, it was just lacking.

I think what a "bad ending" comes down to in terms of ruining an anime, is whether or not it ruins the themes and questions that are explored throughout the series, thereby ruining the re-watch-ability and changing the tone and perceived intention of previous episodes. And, at least right now, I can't think of any that have been ruined to me because of that. Sure, the first 50 episodes of an anime can be great, but to me, that makes them just that, good episodes, but if you're going to be reviewing the overarching show as a whole, you can't leave the ending out of your final analysis. I think "ruin" is a strong word for it. All in all, if a show is great before the ending its still going to get (or at least should get) a glowing review, I don't think a show should be torn to shreds due to the ending, but in order to make the show exceed expectations and become truly great, the ending makes a huge difference between a 8/10 anime to a 10/10 anime. Great analysis, love your videos, keep up the awesome work!

Reading this reminded me of Akame ga Kiru. Faithful to the manga, until one point where it diverges. I didn't feel comfortable with the original direction the anime went with (although some stuff i liked rather than the manga. For example, the dead of someone), but it's pretty much my opinion.

I totally agree, lets take One piece as an example which is loved by many and is really good, however it hasn't ended. Right so if we compare it to lets say FMA Brotherhood, which has a great ending and rappes up the major questions. Which I would say FMA is the better anime because of it great ending and because I do not know One piece's ending and has the potential to just shit itself in the end, like some *cough cough* Evangeline *cough cough* loved it until the end. *cough* it's cursed *cough* but that doesn't make the whole show "Ruin". I never watched ERASED of its mystery it had, I love ERASED because of the philosophical ideas it brought up and I thought about how do I imply the idea of living my life with out regretting my choices and my actions that have n my own and others futures. thus this is what made ERASED a good anime in my opinion. or Berserk's ending which pissed me off how it ended to which I went and read the manga and I believe that the ending in the anime did "ruin" my experience of the anime or Manga. With it's controversial ending of the show and the manga's controversial topics allows us as audiences to reflect on our own selves and sympathies with Guts. P.S. Griffith fucked up.

The reason why it was Hiromi out of everyone is because originally Hiromi was also about to get killed by the killer along with kayo and the other girl, but satoru saved both of them and then hiromi and kayo gave birth to a new life. So inshort satoru saved that child.

sorry but i loved the ending of Erased. i mean he's whole thing was that he scarificed everything to save those girls .. and people are pissed that he didn't get one of them? reminds me of this idea that the good guy will get the girl because he saved her ... please

In my opinion what really killed the ending for me was that it was anticlimactic and rused. I can't even for the life of me recall much details of the final exchange between the teacher and the mc because it was so unmemorable other than me thinking, "what the fuck is going on?"

Well, I watched the anime for Usagi Drop, it became one of my favorite anime, but then I found out how it ends in the manga and now I can barely even look at the series as a whole without being really uncomfortable. that being said, I'm slowly beginning to appreciate the experience that the anime gave me, while just thinking of the last part of the manga as a perverted 'fan fiction' made by the original creator.

If it makes you feel any better, the show's director didn't know the manga's ending when they made the anime and when asked afterwards in an interview he (respectfully) disagreed with the manga ending.

An ending is the pay off to a show's build up. A bad ending to a good show is disappointing because all that build up was for nothing.

not all stories are structured that way. Some certainly are about building up to one final payoff, but others are more just about the journey . Or maybe the runtime of a show is divided into relatively self-contained arcs or sub-arcs that each have their own build-up and pay-off. So a bad ending to the last arc may have very little impact on the arcs before it.

Agree. The ending, in storytelling in general, is one of the most important things. The pacing can be set aside if the ending is amazing. The introduction can take a secondary role if the payoff is great. The ending is imo the key to make the decision whether you wanna spend more money on a show or not, it's the last moment you remember of a series and the last final impression you get of it. The last impression in general, for whatever in life, is the most important imo.

Unless they REALLY fuck it up though, the ride to that point was good, was it not? The ending has a lot to do with the story, BUT i dont think the ending ruined it in all honesty. I think it took some of the "wow this is really good" aspect away, but overall still really enjoyed the ride to that point. Even with Bleach being the disaster it was in the ending, i still loved the ride to that point and you shouldnt take away all of the good of an anime/manga because the ending wasnt perfect.

What stories are structured in a way that they don't have a climax and real ending? Stuff like that are usually episodic, and the individual episodes have normal story structure but the story doesn't really progress much over the course of a series. These are basically slice of life shows or comedies.

I loved the ending of Erased dude. I had no problem with it.

People may not like the ending of Erased, but the ending makes sense. A lot of people were mad that Kayo and Satoru didn't date, but Satoru is a 29 year old guy who wanted to save an 11 year old girl from being kidnapped and killed. With Satoru going into a 15 year long coma, nobody knew if he'd ever wake up. So Kayo moving on instead of waiting for 15 years makes sense to me. I still really liked Erased, it's definitely one of my favorites and it's a masterpiece in my opinion

nobody blames kayo for not waiting 15 years we blame the author for putting satoru in a coma for 15 years+that’s not the only bad thing about the ending

There´s another thing that the original FMA did better than brotherhood (aside from the lighting) Hughes´death. We spend a lot more time with him in the original and so the death feels a lot more painful than in brotherhood. Ironically after the death i feel brotherhood got a lot better and was able to overcome the original.

As someone who didn't watch FMA 2003 (or anime in general, which hence made me more used to Western animation's compact storytelling), the pacing in the first part felt just fine for me (aside from original Greed's abrupt death, that did feel weirdly quick for one of the 7 main villains, though him returning later does mitigate that). Although, I will say, that quick pacing did set up expectations for the rest of the show that it then subverts, since it stops being episodic and plots take much more time to resolve. So actually, for me, my quibble with the show's pacing is the last chunk of the show is too slow, mostly because of how many plotlines are going at the same time without any resolving till the very end. Though speaking of that ending... Yeah, I didn't care as much about my quibbles after that ending. It was a pretty dang good ending.

I was a bit sad with the ending of Erased, but thats because a part of me wanted to see a fairy tail ending. If you can accept that the cute moments were just that, cute moments, then you can appreciate it as a show about a boy trying desperately to save a helpless girl from a tragic fate.

Basically. There's a few fillers you can skip from the '03 one (except the Mine episode, because without it, Yoki isn't as funny), but it's much more satisfying than just watching Brotherhood straight out.

I don't know why they rushed the pacing of the part of FMAB they already covered in FMA, or why they added that terrible first episode when the start in FMA and the manga worked perfectly fine. But from Shao Tucker (I believe that's how you spell it) onward in Brotherhood the pacing isn't as unbearably rushed. My recommendation is skip episode 1, and then watch the rest of FMAB while keeping in mind at the beginning that it gets much better later

Not in the slightest. FMA 03 doesn't adapt the Manga before going it's own way so much as rewrite the Manga material along with setting up the second half. The timeline of Manga events is completely restructured with things like Julia Douglas as well as mythos behind Ishval and the Philosopher Stone NOT meshing with Brotherhood in the slightest.

I actually really liked Erased's ending and don't understand the hate against it. I get that the killer was obvious, but I loved the execution of everything regarding the reveal, timeskip, lost memories, and the trap they set for the killer. I also loved how we get insight into the killer's psyche as well and how Satoru gets into his mind.

I think a lot of people are also mad that Satoru didint get with Kayo. But the way I see it Satoru was never interested in this 11 year old girl because he was technically 29 and just wanted to save the kids. Like his biggest regret was that he couldn’t save that girl it wasn’t that he wanted to smash the girl or devolved Romantic feelings for her. His mission was always to save the kids and find who the murderer is

@@Snpaulie Oh yeah, didn't they get together in the manga or something? I haven't read the manga, but I honestly agree, I think it's completely normal that they didn't get together in the anime. People that read the manga were likely waiting for it as a big thing, but for me who was just an anime viewer, I feel like the bias isn't there, and I can enjoy the ending without having known a different ending already. The other ending may possibly be a better one, but I still enjoy the one I'm familiar with too.

When she showed up with the baby I just couldn’t.. I WAS CRYINGGG But still I love that anime!!

The ending to FMA 2003 felt depressing, even after watching the movie it only made me feel sad that no one they knew will ever see neither Ed or Al again. After watching Brotherhood those concerns were quickly taken away, it had a satisfying conclusion, one that the characters earned and deserved, not to say the original wasn't a great show either.

2003 had that depressing and ruthless tone in it throughout. Many seem to only pay attention to the main plot but the 2003 version was diverting heavily from the manga even before then and was setting up it's own story well in advance. So it wasn't as if they didn't know what to do and made it up as they went. Some parts that might have been the case but the major bew plotlines were clearly set up while the main story was still following the manga.

srsly, DO NOT LOOK for the ending of Usagi Drop, i tought it wouldn't change it for me, that i was strong enough, i wasent.

yep... usagi Drop is forever ruined with the ending.. same with "for my daughter i might even be able to defeat the demon king" which has a similar ending to Usagi Drop(altough less "drastic" do to story setup) and activly made me stop reading the manga adaptation(and not wanting to watch the anime) after i found out despite, or rather because, it was so wholesome before and now that i know what it leads up to its all tainted, its tainted with a disgusting filth it will never get rid of ever again.... spoilers for "for my daughter i might even be able to defeat the demon king" and thus implied spoilers for usagi drop ahead(as similar ending so knowing one will spoil the other) and "for my daughter i might even be able to defeat the demon king" at least has the benefit of the doubt as A) she was older(not much) when basicly adopted, B) he was younger in general(18 and 8 at the start vs 30 and 6 (booth start of the series) C) that they are 100% NOT blood related(in usagi drop she IS the daughter of his grandfather, thus his aunt(which is weird in so many ways to begin with) Still them ending up togetehr tainted the series in my eyes.. even IF people try to justify it with "she never called him dad, but always by his name" (when i recall her also calling her Biological Dad by his name iirc) and similar things.. in this case evne if im disgusted by it.. i can see where it comes from and why it isnt as disgusting as usagi drop for many people.....

She's not his grandfathers kid, thats a major thing in the story. His grandfather took care of her for her mom because she didn't believe she could be a mother. Other then that i do agree that the ending does give off a tales genji style vibe.

The moment when Erased lost me was when Satarou was in the car with the killer. And since they hadn’t really been developing the mystery, they just threw a shit ton of clues and hints in my face to the point where literally yelled “OH MY GOD, I CAN’T TAKE THIS ANYMORE, YOU ARE SO OBVIOUSLY THE MURDERER!”

The problem of the bad ending is that it always leaves an aftertaste, its always something bugging you when looking back, sometimes anoying, sometime downright infuriating. You cannot go back cause you have that shadow looming. I speak mainly from manga, as i have encountered some of the worse endings posible, and some that just leave you unsatisfied.

Erased's ending is actually much better if you view this show as a Columbo episode. In an episode of Columbo you know who dunnit from the start, and the show is about the protagonist catching them. And most of what people hated about Erased, is that we know who dunnit very early; but it becomes acceptable if you can accept that this show isn't about mystery. The main failure in that show is that they didn't make it obvious you were watching Columbo, while you thought it was Scoobidoo.

But thats the problem with such a big audience of anime honestly when talking about "everyone knew", because not everyone knew from the beginning who it was, but the chances that a good portion of the people knew is right. Why? Because, well when you have hundreds of thousands of people watching something, everyone combined will have a guess of pretty much every character in the anime being the murderer. Im pretty sure some people thought the mc would be the killer, or the girls mom, or the teacher, or any other character. Its like giving someone a question and you give them and 2 answers a or b, and they can choose they have 100,00 other friends playing along and they each get 1 guess. ATLEAST 1 of them is bound to be right just by the odds. Then stage 2 of this is someone says what happens as a guess, they were right, and then EVERYONE pretty much jumps on the bandwagon so they dont look dumb.

Yeah honestly if people couldn't tell that Yashiro was the killer, they weren't paying attention. The first shot of him, as he walked into the classroom and the camera uneasily followed him as he walked, made it obvious. Along with every other shot of the camera placing undue focus on him, or lingering on him for just a little too long, or showing his creepy smile obscured by shadow, or showing the killer as he stood outside Kayo's house with an identical haircut to Yashiro, or literally showing his face as he walked away from Satoru's apartment.

I was ticked off when the ending came along. Both Satoru and Kayo had a really strong bond, that the author devolved through the majority of the show. But then I realized something that slightly made things better. Satoru went in the past to save everyone. He was supposedly living the same life as if everyone had been murderd, except he saved them all. He just continued his life as if he had been erased from everyone’s mind.

I've actually always loved Eva's weird dreamy original ending. I've only ever watched End of Evangelion once, but watched my tape of the last two episodes over and over.

It ruins everything cause if you rewatch/reread after seeing the ending it you cannot ignore where it all leads and so everything is tainted. That's also a go to example of a series where the anime is better than the manga.

Contrary to your common shipping wars, this is not a matter of whose ship is better. The one that was carefully crafted with love and affection in the anime was sunk without any thought while the one that sailed was a hastily crafted mess; it literally blindsided the audience. This could have been solved either if the anime closely followed the manga or if the anime creators changed the entire ending with a proper plan. From the get-go, the anime shipped Satoru and Kayo hard. 75% of the anime is spent exploring and nurturing the bond between these two individuals, and that effectively makes them the lead male and female characters respectively. Before going to the past, Satoru had a huge regret for not saving her 18 years ago. Coupled with his mother’s murder, his initial goal was to save the three kids and find the murderer, which would also allow him to save his mother and himself as well. However, once he befriends Kayo and gets to know more of her personality, he becomes more than just a friend. Their interaction and just how much Satoru strove to save Kayo from physical abuse and impending death are the biggest attraction point of the anime. Compared to his relations with his other friends and the other victims, theirs was special. Who wouldn’t agree that the scene where the two foxes circled them on their way to the Christmas tree decorated with glittering ice filled our hearts with warmth and affection? It was so adorable! Birthdays on the same day. A mere coincidence? I think not. Despite coming back in time with an objective to save people, he made an extremely meaningful bond that transcends normal friendship. Even when they parted ways as Kayo went to live with her grandmother, Satoru ran after the car as far as he could just to see her for just a few seconds longer. Has he done the same for anyone else? No. Kayo was special for Satoru. Much of the screen time nurtured and developed their bond and the audience grew fond of it. We were able to connect with them deeply and rooted for them to be happy together, and what do we get in return for all of that emotional investment? Satoru goes into a coma and wakes up fifteen years later to find out that one of his best friends, whom he had selflessly cared about so much and whom he had saved/shielded from a ruthless serial killer as a kid, had now married his one precious somebody that was not family while he was comatose. And then we have to shove down our throats that he has a kid with her. Okay, cool. The revival will fix everything right? WRONG! Uh-uh. We only have one episode left to wrap it all up and the bond between Yashiro and Satoru (which is almost non-existent, thanks to the divergence from manga) takes precedence over the Satoru and Kayo’s bond. All the effort that went into developing a beautiful relationship over 10 episodes was thrown out of the window and no afterthought was presented from both parties (Satoru and Kayo) to give it a proper closure. Ouch! That’s when I personally felt a part of me die inside and everything started to go downhill. Realisation hit me that I had sat myself down to watch a beautiful anime only to leave my heart aching with regret for watching past episode 8. It was depressing as hell! Ugh! (I am absolutely not putting in a picture of Kayo with the child because if you are anything like me, the pang of pain isn’t worth it.) Now, it’s perfectly fine to think that Kayo should have moved on after Satoru didn’t wake up for 15 years. It’s sad, but there is no denying that even Satoru would have wished for her to move on and be happy. He is selfless after all. What doesn’t sit right, however, is that it was his friend that won her heart. Let me get this straight. Hiromi married his heroic selfless childhood friend's girlfriend without a care of how Satoru would feel when he woke up from a fifteen-year-long coma that, as Satoru said to Yashiro, went by like a flash. Kayo marrying someone Satoru didn't know wouldn't have made it as much worse as it was but marrying his friend's precious someone? Seriously? You are gonna do that to your friend? What happened to Bro Code? Yeah, of course, Satoru would be kind enough to just accept it because he is selfless and cares for you, and would be no doubt happy for you all, but did you ever even think about how he would feel inside? You seriously cool with that? Personally, I think Kenya was the one true friend Satoru had. He was sharp, was capable of empathizing others, and was the main guy who got his friends together to help Satoru recover. Since Hiromi is a minor character who didn’t even show up when I google searched the characters in Erased (no offense, just the hard truth), a lot of people have the opinion that if it wasn’t Satoru and Kayo getting together, it should have been Kenya and Kayo. That leads me to think that even if Kayo had approached him, he might have turned her down because he couldn’t stab his friend in the heart. I know I wouldn’t. He had the foresight to predict how it would look like if Satoru woke up from his coma and saw him with Kayo. If it were me, I would be riddled with guilt. Satoru is a selfless guy who can forgive people and move on, but nothing hurts me more than seeing such people being hurt by others in return for their kindness without a thought about how they would feel. (I know I said that I didn’t want to post a picture with Kayo and her child, but I am willing to post Satoru’s drawing of her and the child to emphasize a point. How does it look? While the baby is sound asleep with the mother wearing a smile, to me, the picture looks sad. Now, whether the gloominess comes from Satoru’s state of mind or how Kayo actually looked like when she met him is up to your interpretation.) Well, in the end, things turned out to be really dark, and as a consolation, Satoru still had Airi, or did he? Who knows if she already has a boyfriend in this timeline. Their bond was underdeveloped in the anime, and although it started quite strong at the start, it doesn’t hold a candle to the depth of Satoru’s bond with Kayo Hinazuki. I guess Satoru did once say that revivals only ever result in neutral or negative outcomes for himself. He got to save his precious people and overcome his life’s biggest regret: saving that one lonely mystery girl clad in red who wandered the park alone in the snow till nightfall. No matter how he changes the future after he uses a revival, he will always be a bystander who protects strangers and the people he cares about. He cherishes their happiness above all else, and that’s what makes him a great hero. Truly, a sad sad story about a man who gave everything and was left half alive by the end of it all. (note, this is my opinion from the anime, please dont hurt me)

I loved the erased ending. It's definitely one of my top three endings next to FMA brotherhood, and code Geass. I think people just don't understand symbolism and need everything spelled out to them.

Ruin? No. Leave a horrid taste in your mouth (so to speak)? Yes.

man FMA:B ending was one of the best endings in anime I've seen. From the final battle between 'father' and the rest,to the moment Ed realises what Al was about to do, to when Ed recovered Al's body from truth (man what a scene, and the soundtrack)...And that ending was built up very well as well and even after that when we see ed's proposal to Winry and what everyone did in the future, I think that was a good conclusion. In most anime I feel depressed when they end but with FMA:B...I just felt content. Obv I'd like to have seen more of it but I wouldn't change a thing about the way it ended tbh

I loved the final season of FMAB but I don't care much for Father especially in his God form. Wrath, Pride and Envy were imo the best villains and by episode 61 they're all dead. I was only watching the last 3 episodes to see what would happen to Greed, Roy, Hohenheim and how Ed/Al would get their bodies back. Episode 63 was great, Hohenheim's death, Greed's death, Father at the gate, and Ed giving up his alchemy. When I saw the last episode... I felt nothing. I liked how Ling volunteered to help May's clan and Roy getting back his vision, everything else I didn't care about. I prefer episode 51 of FMA2003 compare to episode 64FMA BROTHERHOOD.

NANO Ff okay I know I’m late but come on, people shit on the original Fullmetal Alchemist way too much and don’t give it enough credit. In my opinion it’s honestly the real Fullmetal Alchemist, as the characters for the most part we’re still themselves and didn’t break out of character too much. But the real reason of course I’m here is for the ending. It makes me wonder if people even bother to pay attention to what was going on in the end of the series and the message it was trying to tell. The ending isn’t really a bad ending and in my opinion it’s very masterfully crafted especially when it had to go and make its own story after it adapted what it could from the manga. It’s ending while tragic is meant to get across that even though you equal effort may not be equal gain, you shouldn’t runaway or make excuses for the unfairness in life, it’s knowing that truth and finding a way to move forward and find meaning in your life despite a cruel reality. That in my opinion is sure one empowering message, and has far more thematic depth than Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood’s ending. It’s not also one sided, as we both know that there’s a chance that the two of them might meet each other again, it’s left ambiguous but still it’s not a bad ending so it confuses why people just go and say it’s a bad ending when it has this kind of thematic depth within it and an empowering message that really applies to real life.

@@TheVeganStudent_ ok yes it is a empowering message, but it comes out of fucking NO WHERE and doesn't relate back to the original plot like at all. Our suspension of disbelief with FMA and FMAB is supposed to be that the alchemy is completely scientific and therefore not fantasy orientated. And yet, instead of portraying Truth as he's supposed to be portrayed (i.e, the alchemist's inner conscience condemning them for their actions, hence why each person individually has their own gate of truth), he's instead portrayed as a sadistic god who resides near a fucking PORTAL to the REAL WORLD which undercuts the suspension of disbelief because you're supposed to be able to feel like FMA takes place in the real world, hence the obvious clues that Amestris is inner-war Germany. Also, on that note of the fascist government allegory, the fact that FMA shoves the allegory down your throat is what ruined it for me. Like, they legit meet and defeat Hitler. Just, let that sink in for a minute. Does that sound fucking ridiculous? Yeah, that's because it is.

The Erased ending was only bad because kayo ended up with the femboy. Like come on, I would've been happy with Kenya.

Erased I didn't hate but also can see the criticism but I will never understand how people have a hate and criticism of Fullmetal Alchemist 2003's ending when the end of Brotherhood is literally f*** the world rules set up to this point. Equivalent what now?

I think the reason anime fans put so much emphasis on endings is because at lot of the time we don’t really get them. In this medium it’s very common for a series to not be adapted fully or in the case of Shonen they tend to go on forever with tons of filler and no end in sight. As such it’s a breath of fresh air when you have a series that makes it all the way through to the end and that end turns out to be satisfying. Just due to how rare it is I usually give a show with a good ending a bump of one or two points just due to that alone.

Giotis Filopanos I completely agree. I love reading modernist books like Kafka and pre-modernist like Ivan Ivanovich, and because I've read and enjoyed endings that are poetic but not satisfying, I can really enjoy and understand a lot of those kinds of endings in anime. I don't understand how people can think Death Note has a bad ending, as with Erased.

My dude that's spot on! Most of these anime that come out have so much cliffhangers in which logical thing is to get another season or last episode but unfortunately a lot don't get them. Most of the anime need the "end" or they aren't getting relief of closure.

everyone keeps getting so mad at the ending for erased. and while i do admit it wasn't the 100% satisfying conclusion that i was looking for... It was not a dissapointment. I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and was very happy with the ending of it, (If not very sad that Saturo and Kyo never got together :( which was a disapointment) But the show was very well put together, and the ending didn't dissapoint me.

I really dislike the people who rage about how Satoru not ending up with Kayo ruined the ending for them. I was really sad too, but that didn't ruin the ending. I also think the main argument as to why Satoru and Airi potentially - potentially, not canonically - ending up together instead is wrong is also very petty. Yes, there's an age gap. But, it's a smaller age gap than what was mentally between Satoru and Kayo. Airi didn't get the best treatment in the anime, but she was still important and doesn't deserve hate because she had the audacity to be a female character who was single at the same time Satoru lost his "love interest" and was also single. Concluding Yashiro's story was rushed in the anime, but it didn't feel so rushed to me (probably because I wanted it to happen asap after he came out with the truth). It's like, if you don't know what you're missing out on, Erased's anime's ending is completely satisfying.

I feel bad that you subjected yourself to reading Usagi Drop past chapter 4. I'm glad the anime adapted the manga appropriately.

Leaving a comment many years later, but I'm glad you mentioned your feelings on the first episodes of FMAB, because I felt the same way. I understood that were probably rushing because they knew we had seen this before, but I was still upset about it, and upset for future fans who would skip FMA and just watch FMAB because they wouldn't get to experience the impact of the first episodes.

Same. Though I watched 2009 first and loved it so much that I watched 2003 afterwards. To me, all the moments hit in FMAB, but yeah, there are some moments where 2003 helps fill in the gaps. I came away enjoying 2003 more especially the fitting brothers ending.

Overall, i'd probably put Erased as one of my favourite anime's of all time, i loved the build up, wished we saw a slight bit more of the younger versions of the characters, See a bit more Airi too, and change the ending to make it not just end with Satoru and Airi meeting. Aside from that, i wish there was a season 2 of it, so we could see more of it, but i doubt that's gonna happen because season 1 already feels like a whole story which doesn't really need any second season or movie (doesn't mean i don't want them, I DEFINITELY WANT THEM).

Yeah, I really liked the younger versions of the characters (especially Kenya, for some reason) and Airi was amazing. Wish we saw more of them.

The ending for Soul Eater left me very unsatisfied. The anticlimactic battle between Make and Asura that ended with her *SPOILERS* punching him really hard in the face really killed the anime for me. I can watch the beginning episodes just fine, but when the diverge from the manga happens, it becomes difficult.

The place where the anime ends is like, 1/4 of the mangas total content. I would really suggest reading it, it is a much more fulfilling story

its not as though an ending that doesnt satisfy personally isnt canon, but it doesnt seem real in the context of the show itself. Also, life not working how we want has nothing to do with this topic and is pathetic, in life people die all the time but you would be sad if a loved one died right? Even considering that point, it is animation, a story, art that can be controlled to produce whatever outcome they decide to create. If you are loving an anime for all the artwork(story,theme,etc) preseneted in the begining, but suddenly the ending has nothing to do with any of its former selling points it wont feel like a real conclusion, somewhere along the lines the show lost itself or the show lost you.

The problem wasn't that it was "real", as those same elements happen in the manga (Kayo marrying the trap, Satoru losing his power and reuniting with Airi, etc.). The problem was that it changed a large section of the plot progression in-between when Satoru wakes up from his coma and when the teacher is caught, causing it to feel like far more of a cop-out than the manga.

Endings are treated as so important because they are. Though you can't throw a show cause the ending is the culmination of everything we have been through so when it is a huge letdown or a waste you feel it because without a proper finish nothing is the same. Imagine a paper with a terrible conclusion, Sex with no finish or a youtube comm

I think the Tucker story in Brotherhood is effective in its own right because it's a HUGE gut punch. Part of you can see where it's going but you don't want to believe that they'd actually go there. Having read some of the Manga first before the 2003 Anime, I found myself almost dropping the book itself in shock and hooked by the series itself. The 2003 Anime indeed did it real justice as you described but in its own effective way, choosing to have Ed dig deeper himself and figure it out early rather than having that one single second where it all clicks into place. Really, if it were up to me, I'd have a director's cut of Brotherhood Episode 4 where additional scenes of Nina with the Elrics are added.

The manga ending or erased sucked too. Too be honest I can't really imagine any better ways to write it in a way that would be conclusive. The anime cut out a bunch of unnecessary junk so I think they did a fair good job improving it.

I only just watched the erased anime today, and I have a question. By going back, and saving the few kids that would have been murdered, did he end up costing more people their lives? Let me explain. First episode, they show off the revival skip, I won't call it a power, because he has no control over it, and he saves a kid that woulda been hit by a truck. Its mentioned he's done that quite a few times, as in, he's saved multiple people. But then he goes back to when he's a boy, saves a few kids, stops the murderer from murdering, sure, but then goes into a coma for 15 years. That's 15 years he wasn't around to save various people. And when he wakes up, he no longer has his tick, supposedly, so that kid at the beginning is as good as dead. Who knows how many he saved originally that are now gone.

Oh shit you're right I was gonna say "well he came back a few years earlier than the beginning so he still couldve done it" but he says revival hasnt activated since so theres no way he couldve. However we could be in some "everything is fixed" golden timeline where those people are still somehow saved but that seems like a total copout also the timeline cant be too great since hes getting cucked

Well it's not his job to save everyone, a person alone can only do so much. Everytime he does something it changes the future so you don't really know whether those people are dead or not but if we're being realistic people die everyday so it wasn't changing much.

Its kinda like the trolley analogy, by saving his friends, and his mother, and ending up in a coma he saved maybe 10 people, but by switching which way the trolley goes, the trolley ended up killing like 50 people.

Sure I'd feel guilty about it but he was meant to save those people dear to him, which was why he was given the power to do so and like I mentioned previously if we're being realistic people die all the time maybe those people were just meant to die but he saved them and now had to let them die to save the ones closest to him.

In regards to brotherhood, as much as the original may have had a more impactful Nina episode, I, who watched brotherhood first, was so shocked and appalled by the reveal, that I felt physically sick and briefly decided to stop watching (though later changed my mind). So I think in part, it’s somewhat down to perspective.

One thing about Brotherhood's Shao Tucker/Nina episodes was that at the time, I really appreciated how they didn't linger on something many of us already experienced. Yes, I know that it's not as comprehensive as FMA 2003's arc, but at the time, all I could think was damn I do not want to go through all that (in excruciating detail) once again. It's like how MCU Spider-Man skipped the entire uncle Ben story, sure newcomers miss out on the finer points, but most of us already know how it plays out. It felt like Brotherhood respected our time in that regard, and didn't want to spend so much of its runtime rehashing familiar material. Unlike say Dragon Ball Super, which spent a ton of episodes just giving us "Battle of the Gods" again, we Brotherhood decided it would move quickly through what was already covered so that more time could be dedicated to new stuff. So yes, in a vacuum, comparing 2003's & Brotherhood's Tucker/Nina story 1:1 makes 2003's the more fulfilling story, but I still am glad Brotherhood didn't spend many episodes covering that story again. Point is I'm glad with their choice to do that, even if it makes for a weaker opening overall.

I just finished erased the anime and I thought it was really good but the ending just made me feel empty, it felt like it was missing something and it just left me craving something more I guess I'll read the manga later

I'd just like to point out, Brotherhood's version of the Nina Tucker story is nearly a shot for shot remake of the original, except with a few extra scenes added to pad the runtime. That said, I completely agree about you having more time to care about the characters in the 2003 version, and the chimera twist being so completely shocking there. I can't really say how shocking FMAB's version would be in comparison though, since I knew it was coming. I will say, however, that I preferred the way the actual chimera scene in FMAB played out. In FMA, you're given some not-so-subtle clues that all is not as it seems with Tucker's wife, and thus, Tucker himself, so when Ed and Al make their way to his lab, you can tell something bad is going on. In FMAB, you get the clues about the chimera from two years ago, then later, you get the clues about Tucker's wife "leaving" two years ago, so unless you're rather astute individual, you'll most likely realize what's going on at the same time as Ed, making the revelation more shocking. Ideally, they could have given more time for their relationship to build up in FMAB, but the scene itself is my preferred version (The voice acting and music might have had something to do with that too).

In retrospect, your comment hits the nail on the head. I recall having watched FMA forever ago and partway into the second episode I thought "He killed his wife. He killed his wife and did something with the body." Granted I still got the surprise twist of her being his first talking Chimera, but I still was able to catch on. By comparison, when I shared FMA with my sister, I showed her Brotherhood from the get-go. And she didn't go "Oh shit!" Until Ed finished asking his two part question. When talking to her about it she completely didn't see it coming and super invested in that one revelation. I think brotherhood tended to do that over all. A large amount of the re-tread scenes were done with more polish to have a much more amazing emotional impact by removing excess fluff and having more focused scene direction. But when it came to character investment they did rush things, as the video said.

Phant0mC0bra I think the one thing I can say I preferred in brotherhood's version was motivation. In irritation 2003 Shou did it because he could. He didn't seem to have anything to prove, he just wanted to make another Chimera. In brotherhood the deadline was pressuring on him and he did it out of a mixture of fear for his old life, and curiosity on what the new result would be. I can't really explain it, in both they were twisted and unrepentant, but in one he did it just because and in the other he felt he had no choice but too. And I, surprisingly enough, had more feelings towards the latter.

Emma Henry I'll give you that one. I've known a couple of people that couldn't get into Brotherhood because of its lack of Slice of Life and breather episodes. That and one person felt that too much time was spent on supporting characters personal drama, as opposed to the story of the Elrics they were so engrossed in.

Yeah, the manga's story is very abrupt and cold, and for me, that was an important part of it. The girl is adorable and the events are a tragedy, but the real horror is that this is just one of many terrible stories playing out in this awful country. I think it would have worked even better as a flashback to justify its extreme brevity, but that tale in the manga told me more about Amestris than Scar ever could. The way FMA played it isn't wrong, but Brotherhood hits me the way the original manga did: it's disturbing because it feels wrong, like we needed more time or information to work through it.

Watching Kayo cried over breakfast was the first time i cried over someone crying over breakfast, even Yuuji's bread scene didn't made me cry like this one

Nobody knew if Satoru was going to wake up so of course his crush would probably get married before-hand.

Would love to see a part 2 updated 😂😂 DARLING!

Not an anime, but I am a Hero's ending was the laziest and most insulting thing I've ever seen, and put a sour demeanor towards my feelings on the series even though it was so good until then. So, yes, endings do mean a lot, mostly because an ending is usually a viewer's last impression of a series, and if it leaves them with bitter emotions then that's how they will view the series looking back.

I saw a lot of recommendation for I am a Hero a long time ago, and I did act on them. Once the spoilers... aliens and bullshit started happening, I clocked out. I knew it wouldn't be the same story.

Christ, I've been looking for Erased. It's my go to on how not to write a story. A perfect example of a series having a perfect ending, and running it by keeping going. A pyrrhic victory caused by the main flaw of the character. Where the main character achieves his goals, saving those who died in the original timeline, but fails to stop the one who killed them, leading to others dying in their place. Switching the victims, saving those he cared about at the cost of not only the lives of others, but his own as well. All because he thought he was infallible because of his knowledge of the future. Then he wakes up from a long coma having forgotten the reveal of the identity of the bad guy, almost all of the arcs that were running ending off screen and being told to us matter of factly, and the series going on to limp to an ending I'm not surprised to hear wasn't very good. I say that last bit because the series lost me as soon as he woke up, and most everything had resolved when we weren't allowed to look. I didn't finish it. It seemed to say, "Hey, were you invested in the growing relationships? These friendships that were only made in an attempt to save the life of the friends that slowly grew into true, two sided friendships? The hints of a romantic relationship? Well FUCK you, because we're kicking that to the curb! Remember the girl from the opening? She's back! Who cares that we haven't had any time with her in a dog's lifetime, SHE'S going to be the focus of this chapter, just as soon as we can get these pesky characters you're actually invested in out of the way. Closure? Pacing? Following through on the promises made in the series? We don't need that." It felt like a betrayal. All that time, all that investment, all that growth, finished in a chapter with a palpable handwave. Maybe it gets better after that, and it gives you the impression that it actually cares about its own story and characters in following chapters, but the pure disrespect of that chapter was a kick in the dick, so I don't think that would fix it for me.

yeah i agree, the problem was on how much time and how you develop the relationship between Kayo and MC, like him blushing like a baby when he was 29, all the effort of Kayo to open up to him, etc and then guess what: it doesn't matter, they are friends. And I kinda understand Airi had no screen time, even if in the manga is more present but she kicks out with NO ACTUAL REASON: she loved him bc she respected him not because she likes his face, we dont know how she get under the bridge when she never been there before, and she pops off like this. On Kayo, an extreme fragile girl knowing his savior was in coma for a danger he saved her from, and she's ok I guess. I get it 15 years of coma and all, but at least give us some hint on how the HimoriXKayo relationship born. No all the cute moments out of the window. And the cherry on top is that Airi is actually underage and 12 years younger than Satoru, making him a pedophile.

Erased was one of my first anime and for a new weeb everything you watch is great so I had no problems with it. But now looking back I don’t think I would like the ending. I can’t bring myself to rewatch it because I know I’ll ruin it for myself.

I feel like a bad ending absolutely can ruin a story, simply by making you think it perhaps wasn't all that great to begin with and taking away your desire to ever engage with it again. I watch my favorite anime over and over and over. But think of how many people said they can't rewatch Game of Thrones after the ending because they know where it's going and it feels frustrating and pointless.

I remember liking Soul Eater back in my early years of high school up until the ending.

@LPASpark The anime kept building up a potential relationship between Satoru and Kayo, only to throw it away and have Satoru end up with an underage girl. Also, it was way too rushed, Satoru just woke up from a coma and got all his memories back, there was nothing to resolve. He just woke up, went a day without memories, got them back, then caught the killer. It wasn't that interesting to watch for an ending.

@@kittykibibble8563 I liked the ending. If he ended up with Kayo + got the killer, It would have been way too happy in my opinion. The anime has a pretty noticable "win some lose some" theme throughout and I while its possible for some to wait so long, I never believed Kayo would end up with Satoru after his 15 year nap. The 15 year Coma itself is so far fetched that when grouped with my prior points it would have made for a very unrealistic ending.

Erased really resonated with me it stayed in my mind for several weeks after I’d watched it I generally started daydreaming about it in class and the next thing I know I’m tearing up a it made me feel so emotional and tense so the ending just didn’t matter to me the show has already proven itself to be an amazing beautiful peice of storytelling and I was always think of it as my top 3 anime of all time

Your bit about Kado got me wondering about something that might make for an interesting video. A list of anime you've watched that started out promising; good story, build up writing etc but at some point went downhill. Not like good anime that suffer from a bad ending but an anime where after a certain point every single episode was bad enough to undermine everything that came before. Y'know like good shows that couldn't even wait for the ending to shit the bed.

@@LaineMann I heavily disagree with you on Yuki Yuna. Mind explaining why you thought it went off the rails? (And don't say "because it became a Madoka clone" or "because it became dark" because those are invalid arguments

Honestly I was okay with the ending for Erased. I hate when every series has to have everything neatly tied up with a bow at the end. And I was more in it for the relationships than the murder mystery as you said.

that's been my problem with some of the newer Studio Ghibli stuff. When Marnie Was There had the worst of it, but Arriety kinda tripped itself in the last few seconds too. both those movies tried to wrap everything up in the last few seconds, and it kinda ruined my emotional investment. hated EOE, though. watching shinji get over his issues actually made the series worth it to me (the whole "I don't have to hate myself" thing), and the movie RUINED that.

I really liked Erased, but I had read the manga first and it combines the best parts of the anime and the drama. The ending of the anime didn't bother me because I had already read the longer and better ending before hand. Although I do understand why people would be unhappy with the anime's ending if they hadn't read the manga first.

The problem with FMA '03 and FMAB is that you can't exactly watch the first half of the former "instead" of the first 13 episodes of the latter, since some plot details and setup elements are different, if I remember correctly. =[

Every endings leave the last impression that'll keep you remembering that moment. This applies far beyond media, which is why endings are important.

I actually really enjoyed FMA despite the ending, ESPECIALLY the episodes with Nina.

I loved it too.

My journey from EP1 to EP10 of Erased was absolutely beautiful. I loved every part of it. But EP11 hit me like a truck like never before. I can totally understand everything. Satoru's true mission was to save his mom, he was always meant to be with Airi and not Satoru, Kayo and Hiromi got together because they were the ones erased from the original timeline, blah blah blah. But in the anime, everyone is missing a very important point. If the story was meant to go that way, then I gotta say, the anime went a very wrong way of development. It would have been fine if the relation between Satoru and Airi was developed more, at least more than Satoru and Kayo. Heck I shipped them first but the development of Satoru and Kayo was so cute that I couldn't help it and waited for him to save her and end up with her. But the writers of the anime decided to make Kayo marry Hiromi, which would have been fine if they had developed the relationship between Satoru and Hiromi. Oh sorry I meant to say that they should have developed a relationship because there wasn't one. That's it. I was depressed for a week after that ending and the dumbness of the writers (of the anime, not the mangaka, the manga was far more understandable).

Yeah by the end of the second season of SAO I checked myself out of the whole series and still pretty satisfied that I did as I got back into the Monogatari series at the time.
