Netflix's Avatar Is So Corporate Now...

Фильм және анимация

Y'know what I mean? It is liquidated down into it's tropey parts. Leaning heavy on fan service and previewing late game characters.. just to keep up retention time in a way that disregards good storytelling and condescends it's audience. Deeper themes and nuance are disregarded for female characters that become weak, follow tropes, and build to a cliche girl power that seems disingenuous. Whilst the very point of many main characters seems lost in this strange retelling of decent visuals, atop bad CGI backgrounds and a story that both disappoint and exceeds expectations. Truly, a mid of a Netflix Series. A blip for Avatar The Last Airbender.

And the more I've thought about this during the edit, the more I have to say! Like how Katara is now treated like the childish one rather than the motherly figure, all to lead to a tropey girlpower moment instead of building her into the strong and stark character she is in the original! That's such a corporate approach with zero subtlety... But what are you niche complaints?

I was also very confused by it. Sokka said in the 1ep "need to do more" or smt like that to Katara. I really hoped they were going to have a fight where Katara said "I ALREADY DO EVERYTHING" But no. Nothing. She really does nothing. We aren't shown once what she does. She only plays with water in a ship.

Funny everyone thought the show was going to be good just because everyone "looked" the part, turns out its still mediocre/bad. Maybe now they can stop blaming minorities (colorblind casting) when adaptations make changes. Watching the Netflix version of Avatar really made me notice just how subtle the cartoon often is, because in here, they really butcher moments of silence of thought by just having someone explaining everything. The biggest offender to me, was the Koizilla moment. In the cartoon: when Koizilla is on screen, there's absolutely no dialogue, no one even questions what happens, what's going on, or anything; and when the moon is back, we know what goes into Koizilla's mind. But the netflix version just completely explains things over it multiple times, and that detracts from the moment soooo much, it takes away the artistry behind it and ruins any deep meaning by having it blatantly explained by multiple characters.

"Show don't tell" is something the writers for this adaptation never heard about, apparently. And the worst part is, what they DO show, is done with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, so there's no nuance, no complexity, nothing left for the audience to figure out on their own. Having all of those things is what made the original series so great, and their absence is the exact reason why the Netflix show is just "fine" and not "amazing", they turned Avatar into another action series to watch and turn your brain off for a couple hours and move on after you are done.

This show just doesn’t work in live action imo. The humor would probably be weird when converting it to live action, the fights would have so much less luster and pizazz, exc exc. I’m getting really sick of people converting animation into live action because many good shows and movies are animated for a reason. They use that medium to its fullest and work with animation in mind to deliver something amazing.

Roku just telling Aang about his traumatic death wouldn't hit nearly as hard as SHOWING us him dying via a pyroclastic flow. Side note I really hate how people make fun of his death. It wouldn't have been quick. If he was lucky his blood would've boiled and he'd feel a flash of pain then nothing. Looking at skulls of the Herculean victims of the Vesuvius eruption, Roku most likely suffered even for just a moment as well. Meaning his brain boiled and was super heated, causing his bone to crack and fall apart. If he was unlucky then he essentially would've dry drowned. But instead of water, it would've felt like his lungs were on fire and for poor Fang it would've been so much worse since he's so much bigger.

The conflict with Aang not wanting to learn from anyone but Giatzo (idk how to spell it) is nice but they mention it once and Katara doesn't talk to him abt it. They could have had an emotional scene of them sitting by a river and Katara slowly making Aang practice with him, by showing him how terrible she is (kinda tricking him). Also the fact that Katara just suddenly was called a water bending master in the end. Like when did that happen?!? When did she learn a new move from an actual master? NEVER. Zuko saying "You must have found a master?" I was so ready to hear Katara saying "No I'm just cool like that." but alas that didn't happen. She just learned ONE new move, BOOM immediately a master. It was also hella weird how the firebenders made it so fast to the north pole. That didn't give Katara time to really learn any moves. But in the end its all just for the money, right Netflix?

I cannot get over how they butchered the avatars. Avatars are supposed to be composed masters (yes even kyoshi) and they give guidence when speaking to aang. Them literally yelling at him and even guilting him sometimes is crazy that it even happened. BUT I like some changes. Them changing Hakodas attitude towards Sokka was criminal though. I have heard many people say that Season 1 of Avatar TLA is weaker compared to Seasons 2 & 3 because they are a bit more darker, more serious, have filler episodes that tie to the main story or have no filler at all. However if Season 1 didn't have any of those filler episodes where all the characters have development & characterisation those subsequent seasons would have to compensate for it and they would have been more tedious because of that overcompensation. Also the creators & writers for the longest time said having those filler episodes allowed them to figure out the tone as well as letting them flesh out their fantasy world in a more natural way.

there where several things i didn't like about this the main ones though was that Ang didn't run away, the thing that cusees him major conflict and how everyone keeps calling him a coward when in this he didn't actually run away he just went out to get some fresh air after being told he was the avatar and got stuck in a storm, in the cartoon he prolly packs his things and runs away but not in this just as the storm hits he tries to go home but just didn't make it. the other thing that bugs me is that katara has bassicly no personality they turned her into the version from the play thats always crying and preaching about hope and she goes from not even being able to make a water bubble to somehow being called a master by paku with NOONE teaching her anything about water bending, im guessing they did to make her seem strong but you can be strong and still need to be taught by someone exspecaly with complicated things like bending. the ang not water bending once was really bad too.

I'm also not a huge fan of the fact that instead of Roku being his spirit guide for the first book and him meeting the other avatars later as he becomes more in tune with the avatar state, he's just able to talk to them all perfectly. They needed more episodes to really flesh out these characters and make them feel more real.

Avatar the Last Airbender was perfect as an animated series, there is no reason for it to be remade into a live-action streaming series, you would think someone would remember the M. Night Shyamalan film, and come to the conclusion that ATAB, was fine just the way it was, but studios just cannot leave well enough alone. Like the 2010 film, there is still too much exposition, nauseating CGI, flanderizing characters, wooden acting, bizarre lines, and are just retreading the original version, just this time as live-action. It's disheartening that so many of our favourite programmes, are treated as content farms by their corporate overlords, it's bad enough when they did it in the past, now execs have added new steps, checking off a list of whatever they think we want to watch, well Netflix, we humans are complex than the hard data on graphs and charts, Shyamalan found that out the hard way.

The first Agni Kai we see Zuko do in the animated show is the one against Zhao, which is CRUCIAL. It's to build a sense of almost whiplash when they later flashback to the Agni Kai against Ozai. Against Zhao, Zuko is cocky and enraged, but out of his depth. But Iroh's there to help this time, reminding him to keep his cool. Whereas against Ozai, Iroh could not interrupt the Fire Lord, and could only look away as Zuko was mutilated. But Zuko is still losing until Zhao tries to firebend point blank into Zuko's face, exactly like Ozai had done prior (which we haven't seen yet). There's a split second close up of Zuko's eyes and you can see he's reliving the moment, but this time, it's as if some part of him goes "never again", and he knocks Zhao's legs out from under him. Not only do we see some of the first hints that Zuko is willing to fight back, we see he has martial skills in nonbending techniques, not just firebending, which foreshadows the Blue Spirit. And showing the Zhao fight before the Ozai fight allows Zuko to remain in an antagonistic role at least as far as the Aang is concerned, even if we route for him against Zhao. Zuko is SUPPOSED to make you hate him early on. Because the things he is doing are horrible. It helps you feel the perspective of the people he hurts, because it quite frankly doesn't matter what his past is, it doesn't give him permission to attack innocent people and burn down villages. Creating genuine anger towards Zuko early on is what helps his redemption feel earned later. And his fight with Zhao is a huge part of it, as it allows the audience to gradually learn that there's more to Zuko than meets the eye, rather than just having it all dumped on you when you find out about the duel with Ozai.

One thing to mention: You said here that "There was limited time", but in reality, if you add the runtime of both, this live action series totals about 7.1 hours of runtime, while the animated show totals 7.2 hours of runtime, that's like 12 extra minutes in the animated show, which probably end up getting used in intro and outro segments, so they probably ended up having the exact same runtime between the two, which means that they could have recreated the whole show frame by frame in this live action series and they would have had enough time for it all.

I absolutely HATED everything about the Bumi episode. Acting was terrible, cgi was terrible, and literally before Katara and Sokka enter the cave they find out about them bc someone tells them political leaders use the caves to have meeting... but then once they get to the cave no one ever comes out alive? Thats my main issue with the series. They tried taking too many liberties while also trying to stay true to the original series without actually trying to make the plots make sense. And I want to make it clear I was never expecting an exact copy but I still expect better from a million/billion dollar cooperation. Tbh I would have been fine if they got rid of Jet completely. He makes an appearance in only a few episodes in the OG series and really isnt that important. Sure he helps lead them to Lake Laogai, but you could have Joo Dee do that if you really wanted to. And there are other things they could have done but thats the main one I could think of.

@shawerful5209 eh I disagree. If a character doesn't serve a purpose to the overall narrative then I see no issues getting rid of them. Like for example, you could probably erase Suki, but it would be difficult bc she does a lot to move the plot forward in the show... primarily in season 2 and more so in season 3. Then you have the inventor who helps build weapons for the war, including the sub Sokka came up with in order to invade the fire nation, he serves a pretty important purpose to the overall narrative. Jet doesn't really affect the plot once he dies, besides getting a few mentions here and there. So sacrificing his plot would have been a good idea so the episodes that included him didnt seem so messy.

Okay, here's some niche thoughts I had while watching: First of all Avatar Kuruk saying "The Avatar has to 'bear' the burden alone" while wearing a bear on his head was hysterical and I had to pause for a good minute because I was laughing so hard, I don't think it was in any way intended to be funny but it got me good lol When Jet and Katara followed that fire nation guy Jet tells him he's outnumbered to which the guy calls out exactly two more people to outnumber them back which I thought was pretty funny and I half expected Jet to also just call one more guy so they would be outnumbered again When they were in the secret tunnel Katara said "Love is brightest in the dark" and she looked at her and Sokka's joined hands and for a second I thought "oh god netflix what are you implying right now", especially since they were in the Cave of Two Lovers but thankfully that's not where it was going For some reason I sensed some romantic chemistry between Sokka and Hahn? Especially the scene when he asked about his combat experience and stuff. Maybe it's because I feel like the characters don't have much chemistry in general but it just seemed very natural in that scene. I even rewinded to see if I imagined it but it was still there Apart from the unintentionally funny moments they did get one or two laughs out of me from the character banter though that still wasn't a lot. Like some of Sokka's lines here and there worked for me and there was that one scene where Iroh asks Zuko what his plan is and Zuko rambles on about how the plan is capturing the Avatar and proving himself etc etc and Iroh just goes "so no plan?" to which Zuko replies "I'm working on it uncle", that actually made me laugh because the delivery was good My biggest issue honestly wasn't any of the story or character changes, it was the acting, writing, script, delivery and most importantly the fact that most characters barely had any chemistry. Those kinds of things really take me out and make it hard for me to connect to the characters and by extension the story. The best parts for me were any additional Zuko and/or Iroh backstory since I thought those were done pretty well and I really warmed up to Zuko's actor by the end. Overall it was alright, not something I needed but not terrible and if they ever make season 2 I'll probably watch it

One part where the show either contradicts itself or is just badly written, is when the iceberg cracks. Does it crack because Katara tried to waterbend the boat to them, and they are showing her raw potential, or does it crack because the story has to go on? If it cracks because of Katara it contradicts the set up of her character as not even being able to bend a ball of water out a pool. If it cracks to further the story, it is bad writing.

I think the biggest issue with the acting is that because they stayed true to the cultural backgrounds of the series they had to 1. Find child actors 2. Find child actors that could do martial arts and 3. Find child actors that can act. It may be unfair to say but it isn’t easy to find east Asian, Inuit, Indian etc. child actors that have great acting chops and martial arts background. I hope the actors get trained while production is on hiatus and hopefully book 2 will have better acting from the kids as they get more experience. The kid I had the biggest issue with the acting was Zuko. I think he was a phenomenal actor but the liberties he took with the character felt like a sin. Zuko is a stern, serious character that is almost void of all emotions except anger. This is a huge part of his development that he is supposed to become someone that people feel comfortable being around from someone no one even knew how to hold a conversation with. The actor imo made him weak and gave him to many emotions from episode 1. If there is anyone that could get away with wooden acting it’s Zuko! Because that’s a big part of his character. He’s supposed to be wooden until he has his breakthrough in ba sing se with only tinges of his compassion being shown here and there earlier.

I really want to like it and I can't call it terrible. Some things I liked were the actors, environments, clothing, and armor. The bending looked passable the majority of the time. I liked that we got to see more pre-banishment Zuko and Iroh. There was even a parallel between Gyatso and Aang and Iroh and Zuko. I like what they did with Zuko's ship crew, giving them some connection to him. But you could definitely feel the time constraints. Events move very quickly. They are also wrestling with new content and source material content. The exposition in dialogue was inexcusable. Aang doing no waterbending is a bad look. The task of telling the story in 8 episodes was going to be an uphill battle. I could feel that there was effort. But I feel that it doesn't escape the shadow that is the source material. Honestly, it needs more episodes in a season, or else it will always feel rushed. In my opinion, 6.5/10. I'd recommend this to an older viewer as a gateway for the original series.

Honestly I’m not even sure it works as a primer. I still think it’s better to recommend the original because it literally takes the same amount of time to go through the entirety of book one compared to this 8 episode season. There’s honestly nothing here that just… grabs you… the same way a lot of the writing in the original managed to pull off. There’s a reason this show managed to get an audience with the parents as much as it did with their kids. It never needed retooling for an older audience.

Aang doesn't waterbend, Roku doesn't warn Aang about the comet but Kioshi warns him about the attack on the North, the library seems non-existent since everything related to it either comes from the spirit world or Roku's temple, the show knows how to play pauses for the sad moments (there are a couple of good ones) but none of the joy-filled ones when they even exist, very little music and uncomfortably quiet, dialogue tells but doesn't show & the episodes spend way too long on Azula. Im not convinced Azula is this "born right to rule" child when all we see is how bothered by Zuko she is like she was during season 3 post-boiling rock. They also did Bumi's character dirty making him THAT bitter. If season 2 & 3 are going to be about anything it needs to focus on Aang (NOT the avatars before him) and the bond he has with his new family.

I'd like to add that "gritty and realistic" must not always mean "not funny" as a lot of movies make it seem these days. "Saving Private Ryan" is a very gritty and realistic movie with some very heavy scenes and it manages to include a genuenly funny scene, where the characters get mistaken for each other. It' s only one example, but I'm sure you could find more.

It feels like someone from the outside who didn't personally experience what happen is retelling the story. The Netflix Avatar Feels like a legend of the original, it gets a bunch of the big flashy stuff correct, the small personal side of things are just not there

i have the same issue with the new avatar series as i do with the new percy jackson series. the potential for them to be great is there, the casting is lovely, the costuming is great, and the foundations for them both are plentiful. but they both fail spectacularly in the writing department. i don't know what it is with recent remakes where the writers and producers think their audiences have the same amount of brain power as a fleck of dirt, but there is a massive issue of talking down to the audiences. it kills all suspense and mystery. writing in this exposition-heavy manner removes all tension from all the scenes. and it just really bums me out.

I enjoyed it as a huge fan of the original cartoon. I’d definitely tune in for the other seasons. Though, it was far from perfect. I think relationships and dialogue between some characters felt way too stunted in the live action. The writing didn’t shine through. Some of the characters didn’t grab my attention and steal my heart the way their animated counterparts did. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how much I would enjoy this show (if at all), if I wasn’t such a major fan of the original.. in another universe where the Netflix version is the only Avatar we know, the show never would have survived 20 years past its air date as a culturally relevant piece of media. This vid says it well; it’s kinda surface level

Doing away with the Aang and Katara love plot is probably the only change I'm okay with... Mostly because now that its live action actors, who are minors, having a love story between them is a lot more awkward than it was in the show (even though there's only a 2 year age gap canonically).

I know you said this wasn't an issue for you in the video, but it actually was really grating on me how much Netflix was stuffing into each episode. They threw Jet, Omashu, and the Northern Air Temple plotlines into episode 3 when, in spite of the similarities in themes, they had darn good reasons for being separate stories in the original series. The entire reason they went to Omashu was to explore Aang's relationship with Bumi and the old world, but now the king just seems bitter and really bad at his job. Jet's story was about how the Fire Nation civilians weren't at fault and targeting them was pointless in the scheme of the whole war, so it's only *more* confusing that he's bombing Earth Kingdom cities and putting the lives of his own nation's people at risk. One of the reasons Teo and the mechanist were at the Northern Air Temple was so Aang could see the wanton destruction and lack of respect for his culture from the fugitives hiding there and reconciling that with the fact that these people are still persecuted and need a home, but that's all lost when they changed locations. I'm not trying to be one of those "all change is bad" types, but it's hard not to be when the changes seem more to be about production cost than anything else.

It's important to note that the show runner for one piece is one of the biggest fans of the source material, not like the way every show runner is like "yeah I'm such a huge fan" no, he is genuinely a nerd about One Piece. That's why the show succeeded so well, I think. Whereas with ATLA apparently the original creators of the show left due to creative differences (or something like that)

I'm probably the only one here who thinks this, but the only saving grace for me in this show was whenever Zuko and Iroh was on screen. Only thing that kinda bothered me was Iroh was less of his fun, laid back self and leaned more into the wise old mentor figure but that was only one thing they changed and didn't deter my enjoyment of him. Zuko was pretty much kept the same. He was still the angtsy, short-tempered teenager he was from the original S1, and honestly, I kinda liked how they introduced Azula, along with Ty Lee and Mai, but I'm probably the only one who thinks that.

Zuko looks way too cute. Back in the day I remember falling in love whit the "bad-boy" type of character who doesn't really give a fk and that is what made the character so attractive. The show later on had the whole story line with Zuko and Katara but clearly now he is just not as attractive and that crosses out one of the greatest romantic developments of the series.

Gyatso, the greatest airbender in the world, didn't even put up a fight that lasted more than ten seconds... In the original show, Gyatso was surrounded by the bodies of almost a platoon of firebenders... Bumi is portrayed as a salty, dumb old man who blames his 12-year-old friend (a literal child) for running away instead of a nutty yet very wise and understanding old friend who gives guidance to Aang to be a better Avatar... Katara is supposed to be the most mature of the group, very headstrong, brave, and sturdy like a rock. Yet she's also caring and maternalistic, like a mother. She's a very remarkable female character who has faith in everyone and never refuses to turn her back on people who need her. I say everybody should have a sister or even a mother like Katara. That is how brilliant Katara's character is. Not a submissive little sister who needs to be looked after by her big brother, like how they portrayed her in the Netflix Live Action. Airbending seemed okay, but a lot more improvement is needed to show the full potential of airbending (not good enough). Earthbending doesn't have any solid martial art choreography and stance that makes it look like Earthbending. It just looks like people using telekinesis to chuck rocks at each other, like Magneto in X-men. Appa should have more character, as he's a very important member of the team that carries the whole gang on his back throughout the entire show. By the way, I didn't know Momo died because I didn't care to watch more episodes of Netflix's Live Action bullcrap... I am actually fuming at the showrunners right now 😠👿.
