Netflix is back at it once again with their politically motivated race swapping of historical characters.
Link to my video on the Carthaginians
• Who Were The Carthagin...
So where do the people who present this “truth” of hannibal Barca being black get this idea, what do they base it on? Archaeologically.
All of this stems from one specific finding, This coin. So let's talk about this coin.
What you'll notice is that the people who push this coin as a true representation of Hannibal Barca never tell you where the coin comes from, who made it, what period is from, what the historical context was when it was made. What proof they have that it indeed represents Hannibal's true features, as opposed to what we usually imagine.
Check it. They tell you nothing of this coin's origins, material, constituents, weight. I'll tell you everything there is to know about it, including the weigh, which you'll see is an actually very important aspect to consider, when we try to uncover the real history and truth about this coin.
This coin dates to the Roman era. On the surface of this coin we see the image of an elephant with a golden bell on one side, and the face of what clearly is a black African man on the other.
The coin is usually presented as a Punic coiniage, which would allegedly show the real face of Hannibal. This is pure baseless speculation. The coin is NOT of punic origin at all, as we'll see.
The reality is that this specific coin, of which we have several samples by the way, is not Punic, and most likely does not represent Hannibal Barca. So who does it represent then?
One thing at a time.
This is an Etruscan mint. Also it might not have anything to do with the second punic war either. That's still under debate. I have a lot of interesting information to share today, so make sure to watch until the end, we'll explore several theories and discuss the pros and cons of such theories, you won't regret it I promise.
Let me show you then how I support the claim that the coin is Etruscan. If you disagree with me I'll respect it, it's your right, but at least hear me out and let me present the evidence first.
3 - An Etruscan Coiniage
As we always do the way to validate any historical statement is to cross reference it with other media. Let's start at the literary mentions of the coin. The first reference to this specific coin with the head of a black gentleman with an elephant is in a letter written by the erudite Reginaldo Sellari, dated to the second half of the 8th century. In this letter the place of the original finding is indicated, Here in Italy, in la Val di Chiana, specifically in the fraction between the regions of Umbria and Toscana including the towns of Arezzo, Chiusi, Cortona and lake Trasimeno.
If by the end of the 1700 the numismatist (that's someone who studies coins) Joseph Eckel in his Doctrina numerorum veterum, had generally mentioned, without being fully convinced, that according to some the coiniage were of Punic origin, already “Sellari” had correctly attributed the origin of these coins to the Etruscans. That's thanks to the following letters, written on the coin, in the Etruscan alphabet v,c,m and ś, which appear sometimes under the elephant's stomach. These were initially interpreted as the initials of several hypothetical urban centres, although they are probably just the initials of the makers or their workshop.
The coins, of which today about 40 specimens are known, are made of bronze, and weigh about 5 and a half grams each. The style is homogenous, and even though usually differences in printing may be an indication of different mints, the issuing centre was one.
4 - What did Hannibal Look like?
As we try to frame this coin culturally and contextually to the best of our abilities, we need to see where the image of Hannibal as a light skinned individual comes from instead.
Let's first look at the famous bust of Hannibal, found in Capua. The attribution of this remains still strongly debated. Was it really Hannibal or not? Difficult to say.
There are no extant autobiographies of Hannibal or Carthaginian works on Hannibal, which has resulted in a historiographical bias
However, we can find a strong inkling as we look at the other members of the Barca family, which we do find represented on the Spanish Carthaginian coin issues. At first glance we can see how these representation strongly negates the interpretation of a black or subsaharan Hannibal, as we see faces and heads which are clearly of a different phenotypic variant. Differently from this coin, these are Carthaginian mints. This is Hannibal. This is his brother Hasdrubal. This is Hamilcar, the father. Why should we believe that he looked like this, if the rest of his family looked like that?

This was a good one! I always wondered how the phonecians of carthage looked in reality. They were so widespread for such a long time that i speculated they may haven interbred on their travels and settlement periods. The berbers as they were then were thought to be blonde and blue eyed. As some to this day still have but its rare. I met a modern ‘berber’ as he claimed as a moroccan who was clearly arabic. Thats an immigration of muslims into north africa after rome collapsed. And as we know rome cruelly slaughtered carthages inhabitants and destroyed its civilization. You did a fantastic job collecting hints and context on this. Much appreciated

All good Metatron, love your work, I'm with you, support you and also won't be silenced towards the truth. But don't give them ideas on Hellenic Mythology. They already think that Zeus, Heracles, Achilles, Memnon, Odysseus, Andromeda, Busiris, Agenor, Aegytus even throwing out ideas that Alexander the Great might also came from African decent etc... were Nubian African characters in Hellenic Culture. They already think that Africans built Athens, Thebes, Argos etc... Don't encourage them. The nymph is "Μελάνθεια"="Melantho" in Hellenic Mythology not "Melina" and does NOT mean "black" as in African. The definition of the name is: "μέλας"="μαύρος"="black", It also means "μελαμψός"="dusky", as in a tan. And "άνθος"="flower" = meaning "she Who is rare as a black flower " (for example a black tolip) = meaning hard to find in the myth. Nothing to do about her being African or having Nubian Sub Saharan features and characteristics.

None of my family is the same shade of brown. Look at Obama, Osama, & Nipsey Hustle, Arabs are "Black" they originate from Africa. Look at the Host of (Fresh and Fit) on KZread he's "Black" his parents are from Arabia somewhere moved to Sudan & he was raised in the US as a Muslim. If they don't project to the world a sense of equality by being equal to Europeans then they are automatically regarded as an inferior civilization. Which, regrettably, they were. 21:31 also, the aspect about being tactically oversmarted by Scipio, is a myth as well. Hannibal lost a major section of his experienced force, when the Numidian cavalry switched sides to Rome. There were other major changes which played a massive role. You can say he was administrarively beaten, but he was not tactically outsmarted. Scipio used almost the same tactics as Hannibal's own in Cannae. Fyi, Hannibal survived and fought against Rome for a long time after that, even till fighting with Antiochus the Third against Rome during the vestiges of the Seleucid Empire. You need to portray correct information mate. Very poor portrayal on Hannibal himself, who for me was the foremost of all generals, ever.

Another example of cultural colonisation. As you can see with Hannibal or Cleopatra: This colonisation is not pan-African. No, the replacements must always be representatives of those sub-saharan African cultures from which the American slaves came from. Hey Metatron! This is a really good and well-made video. I agree with the conclusion of the video that to claim historical figures were in reality a different race to push a political agenda is dishonest. However, I suppose my question is if it really matters if the writers of the show decide to cast a black man as Hannibal Barca? After all, when making a piece of media based on historical events, artistic liberty often must be made for numerous reasons, such as lack of sufficient knowledge or for dramatic effect. Is it really a big deal if the director of a show wants to cast an actor they want to, even if it doesn't quite fit our understanding of the time period?

Carthaginians weren't berbers. Berbero-centrics are not much better than sub-saharan centrics in this regard. There are no any serius studies on Punic DNA, all we have are studies with very, and I mean very small number of samples, problematic thing is that Punics used cremation for longer than historians initially thought. Kerkouane study shows 30% north african genetics (out of which only one was pure north african, all others admixed), 10% subsaharan african, 5% middle eastern and the rest 55% European (mostly Italian, Iberian and Sardinian, but also Greek and Gaelic/Celtic). Again, this study was done on very low number of samples. The idea that Phoenicians didn't colonize Western Mediteranean contradicts literally every historical source on the matter, yes they did, they colonized it in both peace time and in war time when they sent refugees during the Assyrian and Babylonian wars who went west, also during Alexanders siege of Tyre, this is very well documented. Population explosion and limited lifespace in their homeland on Levant (they lived in city states cramped between mountains of Lebanon and the sea) was one of the major reasons for phoenician colonization of the western mediterranean. Certainly there is no base for modern day North Africans to claim this civilization. Even if they were predominately of north african genetic origin (which is very dubious) ethnicity is defined by language and culture, and in the case of Punics it was semitic Phoenician, not North African. They spoke Phoenician language (no it was not "a mix of phoenican and local languages" like berbero-centrics would like to claim, it was semitic language), had phoenician culture and religion, and self-identified as Cananites and Phoenicians. We have first hand sources of Punics themselves and they called themselves Cananites and Phoenicians, so it was not some name Greeks or Romans invented for them, quite the contrary. Ultimately, modern day North Africans are not genetically same people as people that lived there during the antiquity, they have Arab penisula genrtics (non-existant in ancient North Africa) and they have higher Sub Saharan genetics than in the antiquity, and lack European admixture which was present in Norhtern Africa during the entire antiquity and ceased to exist only after the Arab conquest

@@luckylarry88At the time of the Punic Wars, there were the Numidians, who, led by King Massinissa, an ally of Rome, went on to control a territory spanning from Western Algeria/Morocco to Libya. Fun fact, his descendent, Juba II, married the daughter of Cleopatra. You may add some other states after the brief Arab control as well as individuals who contributed to both Western and Muslim civilizations like Saint-Augustine and Ibn Firnas. If you're asking about sub-Saharan Africa, Axum, Dm't, Kush, Mali. You might add Zimbabwe, Swahili and Yoruba as interesting subjects to study as well.

It's actually sad that there are so many, actual, important people who were continental Africans yet don't get any acknowledgement. People focus on this Macedonian named Cleopatra (who did what?) but what about the Catholic Churches official and number one philosopher: the Berber, Saint Augustine of Hippo? He was a heavy hitter and quite scary in his own right. Speaking of Berbers (an indigenous ethnic population in the northern part of the African Continent) we have the real life Zena Princess warrior: Queen Kahena. She was Berber Queen (also known as Dhiya) who was killed in battle, leading her armies and princess against foreign Arab invaders. I found out about her by accident while reading a quote from the famous Berber sociologist, Albert Lemme, in his book: Colonialism and The Colonized. Berbers are fairly light skinned and are often mistaken for Arabs. Or, as best put by Lemme: "in France they hate me because I'm an Arab, back home, they hate me because I am a Jew". The guy can't win.

Loved the presentation BTW - So, Tunisians / Carthaginians then and now are very diverse in skin tone. Also, facial features do not always indicate skin tone. There are many dark skin people in the world with very different facial features than what is represented on the coin... The issue I have with the Tunisians and Egyptians is that they are denying their darker skinned citizens & ancestors. Carthage was in Africa, African people like other people did travel, share cultures and started families with different groups of people. Many Ethiopians for example have loose hair, straight noses and a vary of shades from light brown to dark skinned. Again, features are strong indicators, however, they are not absolutes. Hannibal very well could have looked like a brown skinned Arab. It's not impossible. Denzel BTW is a wonderful actor, and I am looking forward to his representation of Hannibal.

Scipio carefully prepared his army, incorporating new tactics based on those used by Hannibal himself, such as the use of Numidian cavalry. During the battle, the Roman troops managed to break through the Carthaginian infantry lines and encircle Hannibal's forces. The Numidian cavalry, which was a key element of the Carthaginian army, turned against Hannibal and joined Scipio's ranks.
