The craziest part is how they set up a conflict and then immediately dropped it. Sokka having to prove his status as a warrior and protector to someone more experienced than him who doesn't respect his choice to leave his tribe is at least something, and it ties in to his earlier desire to go home back where he feels he's needed, but it's never mentioned again as soon as he's shirtless.

As a woman who has studied martial arts, I have some comments on the Suki/Sokka romance in the live action. My thoughts can be boiled down as "cringe." You're quite right that Suki in this version comes across as a stalker following Sokka around . In the original, she was the head of the Kiyoshi warriors or at least a band of them, and she was a competent and dignified professional who showed that women could do a warrior's job. The stalking thing? That's kind of worse than the original sexism plotline, as it reduces Suki from a professional to a fan girl who starts thinking with her vagina. I'd rather have Sokka SAYING that he thinks Suki can't do the job because woman are too emotional than SEEING Suki unable to do her job because she's too emotional. Her fight with Sokka was embarrassing because he WAS just stretching.. If you are going to practice fight someone, there are rules. They involve you not starting until you've agreed to start, for one. Because doing something like this is actually more dangerous and likely to cause injury. Practice fights are supposed to be fun. and challenging, but ideally you walk away from them with a few bruises or maybe you pulled a muscle. You're not actually trying to injure your opponent. It's practice, not real. What Suki did was dishonorable and embarrassing FOR HER. (I'm so glad Sokka's not sexist now, and instead Suki is just incompetent at her job and desperately wants to F*ck him. That was such an improvement to the story (sarcasm)) The we move on to Suki training him. Which isn't how you train someone at all. As I advanced in my martial arts training, I (and others of my rank) would act as teacher's aides for the master, walking up and down the lines of students and correcting people's stances when we weren't the ones going through forms and movements. So Step 1: You need to talk about your art form. If you're dealing with people from a different art form you need to talk about stances and see if they use them or not (Toph does this in the cartoon, teaching Aang horseback stance, which is apparently key to Earth bending) Suki doesn't talk to Sokka to find out what he already knows. She just starts doing stuff. 2) You need to show the other person the motions to the form you're going to be doing. Suki has her back to Sokka. He has NO idea what she wants him to do with his hands because he can't see her hands to see what the move looks like. Yet somehow he knows this martial art he's never seen before. 3) You don't grope the students. I've put hands on students. It is part of the process. I've also put feet on students. Feet are generally used to get them to shift to wider stances. New students don't generally stand as wide as they should, and it's easy to hook a leg with your foot and pull them into position. And hands are used to grab their gi to keep them from falling as you make adjustments, as well as to adjust their hands. Sometimes you also stand beside them and demonstrate (WHERE THEY CAN SEE) how your limbs flow from one position to the next. Because the actual art is in understanding the transitions, not in landing in the correct stance. It's when and how you twist and tighten your muscles that gives the moves their power. So Suki is creepy, an awful teacher, and the scene only exists to grope Sokka. The only time you could do side by side forms with someone is if they're from your same art form (or maybe one that branched off and you're doing an early form in the progression) so that they already know the steps and the timing. Otherwise it's like expecting someone who does Latin dance to be able to do a waltz with no training or discussion about how it works. They seem to have stolen the side by side in sync martial arts as "sexy and cool" without understanding why real people can and do do this. Suki and Sokka don't have the background to be able to do this with each other. So yeah. They took out the verbal sexism, but they made Suki everything the sexism says she was. Unlike actual Suki who was a competent warrior and trainer. Congratulations Netflix, you made Avatar MORE SEXIST for NO REASON.

I really should have been more specific in my criticisms of Suki's character in just how reduced she is by being so blindly horny, but you managed to frame it very well and your perspective on martial arts is unique and extremely relevant and valuable. Dialogue absolutely should have been shared between the two during training, something that could multi-task as both actual martial arts advice as well as being relevant to the characters and their growth, which is something the old Avatar was really good at, with Bitter Work being the prime example. Probably because the cartoon had an actual martial arts master doing the choreography while this show seems to just let people adlib vaguely kung fu-y looking moves.

@@FishStickOnAStick I thought you generally put it quite well. I don't hold it against you for not zeroing in more on the sexism. I think there's a particular irritation that comes from being told "we eliminated the 'ism/-phobia plotline that pertains to you" and then seeing that, yes, while they did eliminate that plotline, which they decided was inappropriate they actually made the -ism/-phobia issue worse in the work as a whole. It's even worse when you don't think the original plotline had any problems at all. It was directly opposed to sexism, but they way they did it benefited Sokka's character. And by doing it that way, they actually allow for other people who connect with Sokka to see that you can be wrong, but you can also correct yourself and be accepted back into society. You're not going to be hated forever for one F up because you grew up in an unequal society or were raised a certain way. Basically, Sokka being sexist and working to improve himself was an incredibly positive message when Suki and Katara accept that he can change and that he's not wholy evil for that one flaw. Kind of makes me wonder if the creators of the live action totally missed that aspect of the sexism plotline, as with them erasing everyone's flaws, it's as if they're saying society will reject you if you're not perfect.

No one on the island is a bender. If anything Sokka knows about this concept much more than her seeing as he actually fought a bender.

Captains are the director of operations and sometimes literal pilots of naval boats and ships, depending on size. Their only responsibility is to their ship and their crew. A Commander is also the director of ops but will oversee larger vessels and be assigned missions or duties above and beyond their own floating city. They answer directly to admirals (the highest series of rank at-sea) and can direct action among smaller vessels. I believe there is a permanent respect entitled to the true captain of whichever ship you are standing on, but a Commander is a higher rank with all the powers included.

I like to imagine that the old general that Zuko offended is Zhao's father. (They even have the same sideburns.. XD) By doing that Zuko basically "disrespected" both his father and Zhao's, sparking Zhao's animosity toward him. Notice how in the original show, Zhao doesn't waste any opportunity to insult and humiliate Zuko, almost as if it's personal to him. Over the course the season, that animosity grew to straight up hatred after the agni kai duel, discovering that Zuko released Aang as the blue spirit, etc. even Zhao's ego feels as if he's subconsciously trying to please his father by getting as much glory as possible. just like Zuko was trying to please Ozai. But that's just my fanfiction lol.. Still a great rivalry!

In the first episode, when Zuko captured Aang, he doesnt tie his hands? In the world of avatar u had to tie the hands of your captives cuz bending works with martial arts movements. In the OG it was very quick so u have to tie their hands. If you are making a gritty game of thrones-esque show than u must tie the hands as well as the legs, so that your caprive cant bend. The OG played this perfectly, water tribe captives given water just enough to survive and earth benders put in metal ships so that those guys cant bend their surroundings. For air benders, u cant take away the air cuz they will die and for fire benders, the fire comes from their energy so what can u do for them? Just tie hands and legs like Bumi was in the OG, completely immobilie them. In the first part when Zuko failed, Zhao has to break Aang's hands and legs or even cut them off. In a gritty dark series that is the fate of the captives in that universe. U remove the source of their bending and now u won. Aang can blow all the air from his nose or mouth, the purpose is he cant ever escape. So how is that GOT-esque vision work here? In this one Kyoshi just killed Chin the Conquerer? If she did that then the island has to be seperate from the beginning cuz after killing him, she wont just cut the island from mainland. Now I am curious about the lore of the island. Did they also ruined that? Is not avatars has reached kind of enlightment while living as well as after their death. I know they have their own seperate personality but also they should have their own enlightment. I am saying this cuz Kyoshi's attitude towards Aang is stupid cuz when she looks at him, she has to see that the child you are talking to is a 12 year old. Arent u know about these things. Did Kyoshi became the most responsible avatar as soon as she learned about it? Didnt she also make a mistake by creating Dai Lee and now those guys are corrupt and very powerfull? Didnt she learn that avatars also human and all humans make mistakes small or big doesnt matter. Why isnt she give kind of tough love advice or talk to Aang since THE KID IS 12 YO and a human. For the love of god, why didnt kyoshi didnt kill Zuko and all the fire nation soldiers in her village? Why did Kyoshi looks at Zuko and fcks off? Did she saw Zuko's future? If so, she must have seen Zhao's future as well as his plans for moon spirit. Killing in this show is very complicated. One part of it is being a children's show and another is being kind of like high fantasy. In this universe people will be behind the actions of avatar right. Cuz Iroh doesnt want to take the throne and kill his brother cu it will result of another war civil in the fire nation and it has to be avatar to decide whether kill him or just simply replace him and people will agree to it. This is the high fantasy aspect cuz in real world people will never accept it. But if u change it to dark fantasy like Game of Thrones, then the concept of avatar will be under very serious threat from all over the world. Some people can make propaganda for fire nation supremacy will say that Aang is air nomad and he killed Ozai to avange his people cuz he is air nomads. Or U can also say the same things for Kyoshi, she killed Chin the conquerer cuz she wanted to rule the earth kingdom. U can also prove it that showing Dai Lee. U know after like 5 avatar cyle passed, all the world will plan to end the avatar cycle before the current avatar even learn any bending. Because of these reasons, u shouldnt make avatar gritty dark fantasy. It doesnt work. Can u make Lord of the Rings like Game of Thrones? NO. Cuz Elrond will kill Isildur and destroy the one ring and the story becomes elves vs humans war. Just like this, If u want to make Avatar like GOT, then after Zuko captures Aang, he will cut his hands and legs off and they are won. The story becomes fire nation vs all the nations. If something like this happens in real world then that is the most logical decision to make.

When I was watching Sokka and suki part I’d skip past the cringe scenes. I just couldn’t 😭

Hey Netflix and youtube, I get what you’re trying to do, but removing criticisms of social issues doesn’t make them go away. Sokka being sexist was a character flaw not meant to be cool like in a Phonk sigma male edit, him growing out of his misogyny and finding love was actually showed a young audience why it’s bad. Just like how demonizing every video that mentions early 20th century Germany even if critical didn’t make the neo nosies go away, they’re still here but just use coded language.

9:18 I'm sure they're fine... I mean it's not like they're "Airbenders" or anything!!!!! Yeah... Even their outfits would help save them- oh wait they're not wearing them.... That's like jumping out of a plane without a parachute!!! Side note how did Aang get his MASTER AIRBENDER tattoo after almost "killing" people? 11:22 SHE WAS A STRAIGHT UP BULLY! Mind you she is talking down to a child that had LOST his entire culture and family so... NO SYMPATHY FOR HIM!!!!

Uhhhhh Luke wasn't scared of Rei's power. He was scared of how immediately she moved toward the dark side in their training. Rewatch the movie.

Wont be surprised if Aang and katara doesn't end up together. Who knows, maybe Katara might end up with another lady.

Based on what they've done so far, I'm pretty sure they're going to ship her with Zuko. They had a whole scene where Zuko tried to grab them and Katara's scarf/cloak slipped through his fingers and he had this weird look on his face. Pretty sure that's what they're trying to hint at.

I think creators mixed up Navy and army ranks. Or maybe its like in this show and the fire nation doenst have a navy.

Sorry, but the idea that teens are hot for each other because they like the look of one another is _realistic_ - the idea that every relationship is some kind of deep romantic disney type romance is the unrealistic one. Because finding each other hot is a good _start_ but not necessarily the end. So I disagree on this part. Too many shows pretend phyiscality does not matter, so I actually LIKED the fact Suki does a very _human_ thing and look at someone. If you wanna say my opinion is wrong just count how many times Aang ogles Katara in the cartoon.

As someone who hasn't seen or read the originals (its on my list for eventually, when I have time just like Dragon Ball. Work sucks for not leaving me with much time sometimes!) Even I could see the writing was terrible just based on the awkward and clunky choreography on display. Its nice to have the comparisons there to know its so much worse then at first glance. Even Bollywood could make a better live action then this these days, what the hell...

So I know Legend of Korra wasn't the best show. I personally liked it, but I do understand and even agree on certain parts that were bad. However, would it be alright if I asked what was wrong with the Avatar Wan backstory? I personally thought it was pretty interesting.

I mean, it's also the power itself. The line he says is literally, "I've seen this raw power only once before. It didn't scare me enough then, it does now." Or maybe literally, I might be paraphrasing.
