The TERRIBLE Problem with Live Action Remakes | Netflix's Avatar Comparison

my personal view of the current thought process towards adaptations mainly focusing on the new avatar: the last airbender reboot.
i don't own both the music and the scenes, Live Action Avatar: The Last Airbender is made by Netflix & Nickelodeon, and The Last of Us is made by HBO Entertainment Television. this is a review and an opinion piece with no intent to pirate or steal these shows & music.

The whole spiel about The Avatar needing to walk alone is so forced and pointless, the expanded material for the universe makes it clear that EVERY avatar had their own close knit friend group, by virtue of their job requiring them to travel the world and connect with its people.

Right? Netflix needs to stop pulling themes from later in the show without doing any of the work to set them up. In the original Aang does get to a point of feeling he needed to do it alone, but that's not until season 3 and there was a significant reason for him feeling that way (I won't spoil it for anyone else). The way netflix slapped that theme on was terrible. And now what are they going to do when they get to that point in season 3? Is Aang just going to reset and go back to wanting to do it alone? Or will they just ignore it entirely? 🤷‍♂

The past avatars saying that the avatar needs to be alone is so weird, considering every single one of them were in relationships and had friend groups, like kyoshi had a wife, kuruk had a wife, roku had a wife and grandkids, pretty sure yangchen also had a wife, like all of them had people they were close to???

And it's the exact opposite message that Yangchen gave to Aang in the original series... Yangchen: "Avatar Aang, I know that you are a gentle spirit, and the monks have taught you well, but this isn't about you; this is about the world." Aang: "But the monks taught me that I had to detach myself from the world so my spirit could be free." Yangchen: "Many great and wise Air Nomads have detached themselves and achieved spiritual enlightenment, but the Avatar can never do it, because your sole duty is _to_ the world." But yes, considering that all the past Avatars had friends, got married and raised families, etc. (the Fire Nation Avatar before Roku was even an administrator in the Fire Nation government), it makes no sense why they all suddenly would deprive Aang of the same and put new rules and strictures on him that they themselves did not abide.

Yeah, watching The Dragon Prince: The Mystery of Aaravos, I'm reminded how Erik Todd Dellums does so much better as Koh than George Takei. George's Koh just sounds like a predator playing with his "food". Erik's Koh sounds like an actual mysteriously sadistic demonic spirit who actually has wisdom to give, kind of like the Sphynx where you have to play his game; he will give you the wisdom you seek, but should you fail his game (via show any bit of emotion) and he steals your face, trapping you forever between life and death . . .

The live action is what initially got me interested in watching Avatar. I watched season one of the original just before the netflix version and then I went back, started over with the original and watched it from start to finish. As I went through the next two seasons, I got progressively more frustrated with the netflix version. Out of everyone, I think netflix butchered Katara the most. I won't spoil anything, but she has some very intense arcs in the last season and I do not see how netflix can get Katara to the point she needs to be for them to make any sense. Netflix didn't even let Katara get jealous of Aang, and that pales in comparison to what comes later.

Having Katara stealing a bending scroll goes against the current message for women in modern media. They can't have character flaws, display weakness or possess any moral ambiguity.

i'm noticing this more and more where they pigeonhole female characters into black and white morality . rather than creating an 'empowered' character with agency like they intend to , people write another version of the 'fairer sex' stereotype

I genuinely wanted the opinion of someone who hasn't watched the original because I needed to know whether I hated this live action so much because I'm a fan of the original but now I'm sure it's not the only reason like most of the defenders of the live action argue. It just makes what is already pretty bad 10 times worse. xD

You've seen the episode where Aang gets caught, and his friends got sick, right? So you know that Aang is SUPER fast. That and with the now added fact in this version that he can fly without his glider. Who would have gotten to the earth king faster to stop the bomb? The two people that would HAVE to take the long way around by running through the city or the kid that could carry not just himself but his friends to the top of the city by flying? I, too, was half watching the show, yet I could still think of that while texting.

Fallout , Last of Us , and One Piece are 3 of the better adaptations I've seen. And all these 3 things have their creators monitoring the stories. Other shows need to do this.

for the most part i think the acting wouldn't have been a problem if the scenes were written better. is it the writer's fault? was it some higher up decision making gone wrong (as usual). maybe the actors did succ BUT they were literally not given a chanse with this directing and writing, and now everybody will remember them like this and not cast them anywhere... that's kinda depressing
