Nest x Yale vs. August (Yale Assure & 4th Gen): Finding the Best Smart Lock After Testing Ten Models

Ғылым және технология

There are more than five August locks, but the Yale Assure (w/ August) is by far the best.
Yale Assure: amzn.to/3fazaSr
Yale Assure SL: amzn.to/2Z3ViHm
August 4th Gen: amzn.to/2D9kinV
Nest x Yale: amzn.to/2ZOQzZ6
Blog Post: powermoves.xyz/smart-home/aug...
Summary:
August is still the best smart lock platform because it’s compatible with all smart home platforms and has an amazing Auto Unlock feature that can’t be matched.
The August locks made by August don’t have a keypad, but the Yale Assure has a keypad and works with the August app, which makes it the most well-rounded lock on the market.
Nest x Yale does everything that it promises, but it’s locked into Google’s ecosystem and is missing a couple of key software features (Auto Unlock and DoorSense).
Yale Assure (w/ August)
There are ten different ways to lock and unlock it. It works with three different smart assistants, the August phone app, and the August Apple Watch app. A traditional key and keypad are options too.
Auto-Unlock puts your home in Away Mode once you leave your home’s perimeter. Then, when you arrive back home and come within Bluetooth range, the lock automatically unlocks itself. It works 19 times out of every 20, and it’s pure magic when it works correctly. Once you come home, with your hands full of groceries, and the door unlocks itself, you won’t be able to go back to a normal lock.
With most smart locks, the app thinks your home is secure as long as the lock is locked. But what if someone didn't shut the door fully? August’s DoorSense alerts you when your door isn’t fully shut.
Nest x Yale
Nest works well and does everything that it claims to do, but the lack of Auto-Unlock is disappointing.
Nest x Yale provides four ways to lock and unlock the door.
Nest doesn't play nice with smart home platforms because it only works with Google Assistant.
It doesn't have a keyhole, which makes the lock look sleek and minimalistic, but if you only have one entry door, it may be risky.
August 4th Gen
It’s shaped like a hockey puck and replaces your current deadbolt lever. You keep all the other components from your current lock system and your original key will still work too.
It’s a great option for renters because some landlords won’t allow you to replace your entire deadbolt. But if you’re not a renter, there’s no reason to buy the August 4th Gen because the Yale Assure models do everything that the August 4th Gen does, plus has a keypad.

In my neighborhood having ANY KEY HOLE anyone can unlock your door. I’ve literally been at the laundromat drying my clothes, while a neighbor used my washing machine, overflowing the water, then apparently turned on the furnace to attempt to dry up the water in mid summer.

I love your videos man!!!! You put a lot of thought into them. I didn't know you had this more recent video. Most people don't go into as much detail as you. I do think the words/the distinctions can get confusing sometimes. Part of that is because we don't know them. :D Here is my question and I know this may change. I contacted Yale about MATTER. They said all their wireless locks will be compatible with MATTER. Since I don't know enough about the differences between Nest x Yale and Yale August locks, I don't know what questions to ask. But it would appear that with MATTER, the distinctions should disappear. It is also hard to believe that Yale will move forward with both flavors. So... I assume one of these will be sunset if not both at some future point. This scares me a little because I'm not buying just 1 lock. I'm buying 10. But I know based on your video to go with August for the most flexibility. I don't know if you can ask a few questions and give me some thoughts. I'm sure more will be forthcoming in a few months. I'm hoping these locks go on sale for prime day.

I'm sold on the Yale lock. Many reviews have rated it as the best, but you really hit the features that matter. I'm currently using the budget 3rd gen August lock and the auto unlock feature is something that I just couldn't live without after having it for almost 2 years already. At the time, the lock only cost around 120 USD and it REALLY surprises me that no other lock brand implements this feature when they cost twice as much money. I would just add an August Connect bridge, but I really just want everything in one, self contained, unit with everything attached to the door. I bookmarked this video in case your links are affiliate links for when I actually purchase the lock.

My issues with Yale are that it doesn't have a variety of color-matched lower pull-type handsets for a front doors. Schlage comes in full front-door sets. Yales August module also requires a separate Wifi module. Yuck! And if you have two deadbolts (front door and garage), you'll have to use two of these pucks. I'm only still considering this option because I'm trying to move everything to Homekit. Now iOS 15 beta shows support for something they are calling "HomeKey", but no one is talking about existing hardware compatibility yet. I'm still very confused, but great video nonetheless.

@@power_moves Thank you. What is the advantage of the electronic keypad vs traditional push lock? My concern is if the internet goes out, people will not be able to get in inside. I'm thinking about August lock that has a key option and a combo push lock installed near by with the key for August inside

Hey Cam.. I'm looking for a Smart Lock that I can open from my cellphone from far away. This is what I mean.... if someone needs to enter my office and I am not around, I'd like to be able to open the lock from my phone from far away. Is there a lock that exists like that?

do you know of any dead bolt lock with keypad, WIFI & key function outside but ONLY key inside?? It's for a steel door made of 1x1 tubes for Central America. The inside part, anyone can reach in and unlock so that's why I need ONLY KEY INSIDE. PS, would love it here in the US also because I have 2 french doors with glass in them and if someone breaks the glass and reaches in, they unlock the door. NEED KEY ONLY INSIDE.

Really appreciate your insights but there is more to consider that is a bit beyond your scope. Consumer reports covers a couple of security features that will help separate the locks regardless of "smart" features. Lets not forget the basics of any quality lock. Do your homework on the "Dumb" features and you might not be pleasantly surprised that your favorite smart lock fails to hold up under that scrutiny..

The august support is worthless, 40 minutes on the phone, no luck.

@@power_moves, Dude I Have A Nest X Yale Lock. I am not trying to debate you on the product. You're talking like you invented the lock and have an investment in it. i was just saying that if you lost or had your phone stolen, that it has a lot of info like addresses, owner info, etc...., which makes it more likely to be used to gain entry. Not saying that someone would even know to use it that way. If you lose a key, it's just a piece of metal with no lock to be used on. I would not use that feature that's all. I guess with me being Retired Military and working in A Security Field After My retirement. It just enhances my awareness when it concerns security issues. Thanks For Your Input and I did Enjoy You Video. Great Job.....
