Intro drawing by Ashley Anderson: pressstarttobegin.net/
After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

The caveman eating you animation is drawn out so that if you have two players, the other one has a window to come save you by defeating the caveman. My sister and I played this game all the time. It's nice to see it again.

Used to play this a lot with my brother and the neighbors. All the kids were actually crazy about this game and were constantly at our door asking, begging or crying to swap it for a while. I was able to play and complete a lot of their games while they had their fun with the trogs, bless that game. Decades later, it still sits comfortably in my collection, alive and kicking. Glad we were respectful of each other's belongings.

@@BigOleWords Even then, you REALLY have to wonder why Acclaim didn't port Trog to the SNES as well as Trog would have been perfect on either the SNES or the Sega Genesis, and in the Sega Genesis' case, it could have a kickers Matt Furniss soundtrack.
I remember the arcade version of this which used claymation. It was pretty impressive looking for the time. And super addictive! Never played the NES port, but it looks like a pretty faithful adaptation!

i think the NES version is way better: just about a perfect game. watching the arcade playthrough, it just looks kind of weird...and the sound effects are loud and annoying.
We rented this numerous times when I was a kid. My mom was addicted to Ms. PacMan, so this was a fun change of pace for a game we could play together.
I absolutely loved Trog as a kid and besides playing with my brother it was one of the 3 games my mom ever would play with me (super Mario 3 and Kickle cubicle were the other 2) and even today my fiance grew up playing this game with her father as a kid and we play it together occasionally on our old NES

I have a lot of the games you've gone through in this series, almost all of them gifts from my godmother when I was a kid. She and my godfather not only supported my love of gaming, but also computing in general. This one was one of my favourite co-op games to play with friends. They've both been gone for years now, but thanks for digging up this chestnut of a memory!

People have already mentioned the arcade game. There is an interesting backstory, too. The entire control scheme changed after the game was poorly received during a play test. In the original version (which you can play on emulators), you did not control the character, but instead placed bones in its path to direct it where you wanted it to go. People found that too confusing so the game was changed to the control scheme of the final game where you control the character directly.

Play the arcade version. Look it up, the claymation graphics are great and the gameplay is awesome The NES version is (obviously) a port with weaker graphics and gameplay
One cool thing about the arcade game's hardware is the synth and sound design make it sound reminiscent of pinball machines Bally/Williams made around that time.
Fun fact: the prototype had you dot-and-boxing Rex, Bloop, Spike, and Gwen to get them to the eggs.

This is one of those really memorable games because of just how wacky it is. Everything about this game is absurd and it's still pretty fun to play too. It's a unique take on Pac-Man for sure. I own the physical copy of this game. Always found the one-eyed cavemen hilarious looking as a kid.

Super underrated gem. Parents rented this game all the time so I remember watching it all the time
That's better than I thought. I was a huge fan of the arcade game (yes it's a conversion), but I passed on this when it came out because the graphics weren't as good as the arcade. While that's usually an unrealistic expectation for NES games, it was even moreso for this game. The sprites in the original arcade game were all digitzed claymation. Thank you for this. I should have given this game a chance. Aside from graphics, this seems pretty faithful. I think I'll give it a try.

At the begining of every stage there's one shining egg on the field. It blinks very quickly and you have to notice it. If you collect this egg the last on this stage, then the portal opens up and you skip several levels exiting through that portal. That's how we played through this fun game.

To be fair, I doubt anyone has played the original arcade game because of how darn rare and difficult it is to find which is a real shame too as the entire game was done in claymation.
