Nepal's mercenaries fight for Russia | DW Documentary

The war in Ukraine is thousands of kilometers away, yet Nepalese combatants are risking their lives fighting alongside Russian troops.
Recruitment agencies smuggle young Nepalese men into the Ukraine war - they are supposed to fight for Putin's army. They are promised a good income and Russian citizenship.
But reality often looks different. Those who return complain about lack of payment and the terrible war routine. It's a life-threatening mission, many Nepalese are killed in the process. Yet, this doesn't deter some young Nepalese men, like 25-year-old Sonish, who is determined to go to Russia.
A report by Adil Bhat.

Why? All I see in Tiktok are videos where Nepalese are being proud of joining Russian army, where in fact they were joining the mercenaries, not army. I rarely see any Nepalese showing same pride about joining Ukraine army. Its like Nepalese mercenaries advertising their lifestyle being chill joining the russian mercenaries group. This video is for awareness and telling us Nepalese not to go to any frontline, especially Russia. Either love it or hate it, Russian mercenary (NOt Army) don’t provide same compensation and facilities like US or British army do. and in other hand, DW is a German channel and is ally to Ukraine. Do you expect any Nepali channel to show any negative coverage over Nepal while showing good things about India? Remember bhai, all news channels are biased. Truth is western media controls everything and whoever is in power, rules over everything. So stop crying kid. Mujhi patar patar naboo ke bhai. @@ivandemko3360 I dont think you know the ground reality of Nepal. There are no proper jobs in Nepal. The men usually go to foreign nations to earn money. Most Nepali men usually go to the Arab nations to earn money but it also requires large sum of money which they have to pay their respective agencies. Even they dont get paid enough for their hard work. You can watch other documentaries where they have shown the working and living condition of such labourers. Just because they are fighting for Russia doesn't change the fact that this man was just trying to make money so that his family could survive. If you want to condemn this man and Russia then condemn those western countries who invaded Iraq and Afghanistan as they have also used them as mercenaries to fight your wars under your flag.

Nepali men fighting for Russia is not the same as joining the British Army's Gurkha Brigade. Russia will use the men as fodder and exploit Nepali poverty. These men should train and try the Gurkha selection process and not throw their lives away needlessly. If Russia isn't paying it's own troops regularly. As a foreign mercenary they'll likely see no money and have any pay stripped from them on the preface of the equipment and provisions they are given. They won't be registered a Russian soldiers. So if they get caught, they will be looking at the four walls of a Ukrainian cell for life for murder as the Geneva convention will not apply to them.

surprised they're actually returning the remains of some of the "volunteers" ... prolly in order to not incense the people/government too much i would wager. :/ not to mention that AFAIK (and i don't know if this applies to foreign soldiers fighting for Russia) if you want to get the promised bonus in case of death as a surviving widow or such, you actually need to have the body which makes it all the more sad. :( esp. when you listen to these guys and hear out that they're not going in to fight for glory or a just cause, or even with any intentions to kill quite possibly, but just to escape the throes of poverty / bad economy in Nepal. :(
