Nepal's mercenaries fight for Russia | DW Documentary
The war in Ukraine is thousands of kilometers away, yet Nepalese combatants are risking their lives fighting alongside Russian troops.
Recruitment agencies smuggle young Nepalese men into the Ukraine war - they are supposed to fight for Putin's army. They are promised a good income and Russian citizenship.
But reality often looks different. Those who return complain about lack of payment and the terrible war routine. It's a life-threatening mission, many Nepalese are killed in the process. Yet, this doesn't deter some young Nepalese men, like 25-year-old Sonish, who is determined to go to Russia.
A report by Adil Bhat.

Why? All I see in Tiktok are videos where Nepalese are being proud of joining Russian army, where in fact they were joining the mercenaries, not army. I rarely see any Nepalese showing same pride about joining Ukraine army. Its like Nepalese mercenaries advertising their lifestyle being chill joining the russian mercenaries group. This video is for awareness and telling us Nepalese not to go to any frontline, especially Russia. Either love it or hate it, Russian mercenary (NOt Army) don’t provide same compensation and facilities like US or British army do. and in other hand, DW is a German channel and is ally to Ukraine. Do you expect any Nepali channel to show any negative coverage over Nepal while showing good things about India? Remember bhai, all news channels are biased. They are with the other POws for now in Ukraine but it’s true they don’t really know what to do with them. Think they might be sent in for trial like you said .. but I’m sure they’ll keep them around in case an exchange is possible. The ones captured said they don’t want to go back to Russia bc they’re scared Russia will send them back to the front (but I’m sorry I doubt Ukraine will honor that wish if an exchange for Ukrainian soldiers is/would be possible. They are also saying that they were promised Russian citizenship in exchange.. sounds ridiculous but maybe one will survive and we’ll find out if it happened or not
Very sad indeed.

This clearly shows how important it is that everyone in this world is giving a fair chance to have a good life, no matter where they are from. Otherwise they will be tempted like these young men, who only joined a foreign army, because they were hoping to make money for their families back at home.

Nepalis have been always in foreign wars since the First World War…. Hundreds of thousands of Nepalese have laid their lives for foreigners since time immemorial. They have fought the Burmese for Manipuris, fought the Mughals for ranjit singh, fought the Germans and the Japanese for the British. Fought the Indonesians for bruneians. Fought the afghans, Iraqis, Syrians for the British…fought the Pakistanis for Indians and still fight for foreigners

I saw Zolkin do an interview with 2 captured ones a month or 2 ago. I had no idea the situation was this insane. And I can’t believe they pay to actually go there. From the interview w the 2 captured, one said he was in Russia for university but was going broke and needed money for fathers surgery and the other one, if to beleive him said he came to work in Russia as “security” .. anyway both said they are scared to go back to Russia bc they know they’ll be returned back to the battlefield. Anyway thanks for the report DW, informative and solid as always.

@@HShango absolutely. but seeing the economic situation over there and the relative proximity to Russia ... it makes it (and other nearby countries) prime targets for Russian recruitment efforts. 6000 dollars though to get there through brokers/agencies... wow. you have to be really hopeful/faithful in what you're about to do for it to be worth it. and seeing how Russia just throws things (and people) into meatgrinders all the time so far, especially non-Russian troops i would guess (former inmates? people from the outer regions of the country? non-Russian troops? not sure they're worth much in the Russian Command's view ...) :|. welp, there's not much we can do to reach or convince them/anyone anyway really i suppose. it's just extremely sad. imagine going there hoping to make some money to provide for your family or relatives, and realistically probably not having a very good chance of surviving more than a few months, IF you even get paid..... the whole madness of the situation is like whoa. :\

Russia not only recruits men from Nepal, but also recruits from Africa and some of the ex-USSR republics. After a marginal 2 - 3 weeks "training" they will be sent into the first 1, 2 waves of attacks, where 80% are being killed. They are cannon fodder, truly. It is seldom Russia has to really pay the salaries. Nepal protested, they asked their people not to go for this, and also they published the information to not pick up such recruitment on the government websites.
These clowns dont realize they are not recognized as russian soldiers when captured. They are put through the civilian court system, facing 20 yrs to life for weapons violations, murder, attempted murder, among other serious chatges
