Very good procedure to know if the Neo Geo CD unit stops reading discs. So glad the laser unit part is easy to get and not expensive.

Really like how you fix those old consoles and give them a second life! Most of the people would throw it away. Keep up the good work Luke!

ID like to say luke that when i replaced my cdz lazer 2 monthes ago, it came in exactly the same packaging as yours except it was in a plastic bag inside the box. but i never desoldiered that join. but still my cdz works perfect, loads right up, no issues

It is very easy to install a region switch on the CDZ. The system by default is in Japanese region. You just drill a hole through the US labeled JN1 jumper trace and install an on/off switch wired to the jumper ends. It is that easy. Hardest part of it is just mounting the switch on the back, which is also simple to do really.

Luke is such a baller, using a PS3 box as a table.

Thank you so much for this video! Because of your explanation to remove the solder on the replacement laser I was finally able to figure out what I was doing wrong with my Sega CD. Now I finally got it working!

Nice stuff man, I'd love to have a cdz, such a cool collector's piece. I had to adjust the pot on my ngcd top loader's laser mech a few years back, but thankfully I didn't have to replace the whole laser mech. Loved having a look at this repair. You really are a life saver for consoles bro. As always, great to see another retro console saved my friend!

This is awesome Luke. I remember having to tweak Laser Pots on a PS2 which had the Disc Read Error back in the day! :)

Luke-san I hope Japanese video games players know about your amazing skills & you earn money doing repairs for them as well as the odd Gaijin, Southern Barbarian! ;) I don't know what job you do or if you would have time to do all that as well as your normal job but regardless you are a Don, a real inspiration for people who love their games and want to learn more about repairing and maintaining these great old machines! Thanks for all the videos and best wishes to you and your folks! ^_^

Just go to the Neo Geo dot com forums Tech Discussion section. Use search function or just start a post if you are already registered. If not registered, you have to make a certain number of posts and something like 2 weeks has to go by before you can start a new thread there. Best place to go though for this info.

Nope different model lens for the Front Tray Loader and regular Top Loader NGCD systems. Front Tray Loader uses a Sony KSS-240 and the Top Loader uses a Sharp H8147AF. Hope this helps.
