He is one Top10 of all time, easily.

The biggest prankster in F1 history and the most cynical about everything. He could be a world famous stand up guy but he chose F1. Truly a legend.

To begin to understand who Nelson Piquet was, it is enough to start by saying that of the three times he was champion, twice he was without being champion of constructors... he didn't run for the best team. And that he is the ONLY one to achieve this in 70+ years of Formula 1. If you want to know what it's like to be a champion who doesn't give up, watch the 1983 championship here, on KZread. At least you will respect this gentleman because that championship was UNBELIEVABLE. With 3 races to go, he was only 4th in the overall standings. And he was champion. 🥲

F1 world needs now drivers like him.

I got into F1 because of Piquet. For me he's still the greatest.

Haha great, got a signed Parmalat shirt as an 10 or 11 year old at Zandvoort (80 or 81) and a little chat in the paddock. Together with Lauda one of my all time favorites.

This is a racing legend right here. This dude was giving hell to Senna, Prost, Mansel. Balls to the wall!

I´m a fan of this monster of F1. Thanks for everything PIQUET!

Piquet was the most complete, top driver and car developer, champion with turbos and aspirated engines, champion with 3 different tire suppliers, Bi-champion with a Brabham against richer teams like Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and Lotus and Renault, champion in British team on top of an English driver, the first driver to create the least-fuel-saving (to open rivals' long distance from lighter lane) and anticipate pit stop, the first driver to use the hitherto used "heating blankets Smart, innovative, fast, a real fighter, knew how to manage the car during the race in a time where there were many breaks of an F1 of less resistant cars. Champion without the support of the Brazilian media and Globo Organizations (Midia. And important detail: none of its 3 titles was conquered causing an accident purposely throwing the car of rival in the last race, the race that decided the championship. And the Senna fans get crazy and hate him for all that. PIQUET WAS BRILLIANT. Sorry dear Senna´s widows, but this is the TRUTH.

Always was a big fan of him and Brabham BMW was the coolest team ever with best looking cars 🙌 Remember seeing it as a boy in Hockenheim. That bang when he shifted up on the straight was phenomenal and when downshifting there was this hudge flame spitting out....

an excellent driver. And one that understood the car mechanic like no other (driver).

Never been a great fan of Piquet, but he was a really good sport to do that. Many other drivers would have simply said get stuffed. Good on you, Nelson.

He was our most complete racer driver in all times. Viva Nélson Piquet three times champion !

I love everything about this great man.

Great pilot, i saw him when he won brazilian grand prix in Rio de Janeiro, was amazing and a big party! Great years...

my sporting hero growing up.....was dissed and stained by the english motor racing media out of sheer ignorance...to this day he hardly gets the credit he is due in their 'all time lists'....however when you meet someone or talk to someone who really knows their shit about F1 [i.e NOT the likes of murray walker] then they will tell you just how good nelson piquet was...pre crash at imola 1986 he was simply as good as anyone in their prime...post crash imola still a shrewd driver akin to prost]

mark bradley I agree with everything. The Tamburello crash was in 1987 and he went on the win the title anyway. I really wish he took Ron Dennis’ offer for the McLaren drive in 1988. He’d be a 5 time champion for sure.

@@Sirtuta1 unfortunately he wouldn’t beat senna. Because of his accident in Imola. (He lost depth of field sense, and was never the same, by his own words). While Senna was able to put 1.5s faster than Prost in 88... so, unfortunately due to the sequels Piquet would not beat Senna in his prime. But it would be priceless to watch Piquet in his prime vs Senna in his prime, in the same team. 🔥🔥

+maladsyko Piquet was saying that there was no such thing as having too much power. He made a joke about having "short skin." A way of saying when your body clenches from being afraid, and that this was no a problem for him.

Surprise toy City His English is good. The "problem" (for a few people, only) is the way he talks. Lol It doesn't matter what's the idiom (Portuguese, English, Italian...). It's just the way he is. And I like it. It's funny and unique.

5:20 It wasn't '82, it was in '84 and I happened to have attended both races. I remember sitting next to him at the paddock (an improvised shack) in Montreal after the race and his right foot was bandaged up, but he was as happy as a clam. This was the race immediately after Monaco, when Senna did his thing in the rain, and I teased him before the race in those (improvised) open air pits, to get him worked up. I also remember NP and Lauda hanging out and just chatting every chance they got, and that was a great sight to see. Despite the fact the 53 was incredibly fast in '84, and NP have made nine poles, and led many races, the BMW broke down a lot that year, robbing him of certain victories, and the only two races he won were Montreal and Detroit. Montreal was a walk in the park (despite the burned accelerator foot...), but Detroit was a seriously dramatic race from the get going, when he crashed at the start and had to switch to the reserve car (those were the days!) since the race was red flagged. The end was also intense, I believe when he got chased by (Alesi on the Tyrrell?) hard on the last laps. A cliff hanger.

Fantastic story. It was Brundle chasing him in 84 Detroit. Nelson remains underrated. In my opinion he was the best overtaker of 80 s. He rarely had crashed always walking the thin line between aggression and calmness.

It gives me chills: The accident that forever ruined his career, happened on May 1st, 1987. EXACTLY 7 years before Senna's fatal accident, on the same day, on the same circuit, in the very same Tamburello corner.

Simply the best all round F1 driver maybe ever barring Fangio, better than Senna, yes better.

It’s a shame he weren’t British, because he would be idolized beyond belief being a 3 time champion. Most likely knighted.

It's horrible that the Tamburrello curve was never changed until after Senna's death. They didn't bother to change a thing on the Circuit even after Piquet crashed there in 86.

@@andyelliott8027 Patrese, Alboreto, and Berger also had huge shunts there that they were lucky to survive. (Berger was never quite the same.) It was a death trap. There's a difference between bravery and stupidity.

Back in the day the British press didn’t give props to Piquet and the only reason they gave Senna his credit was because he was possibly the greatest that ever lived. But even to this day the Brits hype up their own drivers. Nigel Mansell, Jenson Button and Damon Hill as examples. All good drivers, but not on Piquet or Prost level.

PK was unbeatable in his time.

No, it was 1982 Canadian Grand Prix - he was in development BMW car, whilst Patrese was still using Cosworth (that's how they split first half of 1982) so extra incentive to stay ahead.

You can tell that even today Nelson is perhaps still a little bitter about how the Driver's championship was effectively handed to Prost in 1986. Can't blame him. However, in fairness, Williams always considered the Constructors championship as the primary goal and they still achieved that.

Prost was not biter that he won 3 races in 1981, the same as Piquet but reliability cost him the title or 1983 when Prost won 4 races, Piquet 3. In fact Prost could have had 7 or 8 titles but for bad luck and the silly points system that gave Senna the title in 1988. 1986 It was only Prost who could have won in the McLaren, he made the car look better than it was So if any driver has a reason to be bitter it would be Prost but he isn`t, he has 4 well deserved titles and Prost even said in 1983 after a collision that may well have cost him the title that he was glad Piquet won. I like Piquet and have no problem with his being 3 times world champion.

Thank you for pointing this out. There are many new "Senna" fans that don't even know that Prost had Senna beat on points in 1988. They just kiss his ass and weren't even old enough to watch the races when they were originally aired. Senna was big back in the day BUT nowhere near as big as he has become once he died

And again the comments are rushed by people that still insist in comparing Piquet vs Senna... Piquet was brilliant, remarkable. He concluded his great career, achieved 3 WC, legendary performances. Senna had already achieved 3 WC when he died - but he was in his prime and would still conquer 2 or 3 more WC (probably 95, 96 and 97 with Williams). Not to mention he already had the double the victories, blew away the pole positions record, laps in lead, consecutive wins, everything else. Piquet is such a legend. But Senna was one-of-a-kind.

No. Nelson was arguably the best driver of the 80s along with his fellow Brazilian senna and Prost. Nigel only became world champion because of the Williams in 92. Prost comes in the next year, smokes him in the same car.
