Big fan of your channel too Uncle Jessy!!
I must warn about materials that you should NOT put to the laser: vinyl and PVC. They release hydrogen chloride gas which, combined with the air humidity, generates hydrochloric acid, and that's not good both for the machine and the operators.
Laser etch a "celtic" pattern into the border of a window, but the "celtic" pattern doesn't repeat and is actually a maze. Edit. Then put this window where the sun will catch it, and project your maze onto the floor or opposite wall.

This video pressed so many happy buttons in my brain.
Don't forget to tell Neil that gorilla duct tape lifted off the tape, wood and plexiglass protection film/cover easier than picking out or scraping out all the bits after the cuts & engravings.

Laser etching the backside of a mirror would be pretty neat.
Great collaboration. Seeing Neil in his home environment as relaxed as he can be with all the energy he contains is a treat. I enjoy seeing Joel going "on-site" to different places/people, really missed that during the pandemic shutdowns. I look forward to seeing the results of Neil's experiments!

DUDE I KNOW. hahahahahah.
You guys need to do more vids together. Period. Full stop. I'd watch them all. I love Neil, and I love people making stuff. DO MOAR! ...plz?
Great video, I look forward to more from you two! Fun materials to engrave include: Cork, Acrylic, Glass, Card, any material with coloured layers so you can remove parts of one colour by engraving it away. Fun but stinky things: Leather, Foam, Felt, Neoprene, Bacon! Personally I never use the tape as it's a pain to get off and inconsistencies in the tape means the laser power that gets to your material may differ. If I use wood, I lightly sand the surface to remove any residue and there won't be residue from engraving metals. Plastics may need a different kind of cleaner if you don't want to scratch them up by sanding. Happy laser cutting and engraving!
I recommend a paper transfer tape that you would use for vinyl transfer instead of blue painter's tape. It's thinner and easier to remove. Sometimes, depending on settings, blue painter's tape melts into the engraving and doesn't come out.
I love the collaboration... I want to see both suiting up
Such a great collab. You two work well together. After all the help you've given, I think it's only fair if Neil gets you a small part in one of his up-coming movies. You would do great as a quirky inventor type character. I'm sure all your subscribers would get a real blast out of seeing you on the big screen.
Grew up on hilarious Neil Patrick movies as a teen. I also love diy and making so this is nuts to see him on yt.
At the makerspace where I work we always like showing how certain cut patterns can make wood flexible. I bet you and NPH could have some fun with that. Other than that, engraving gradients and images is also really cool :D Great video, I love it!

the vidswith you two together are such a joy to watch
Safety first? Eye protection while looking at pew pew light. 1) Try doing a custom engraved/cut card with message and image. 2) Show how how the laser can cut materials to create a 3D box with finger or dovetail joints. 3) Deep engrave one wood material, clean burn out, cut inlay from another material and install and finish.
@jefish

The top glass is IR-opaque. The light you see is the flame of burning material. Not harmful.
Excellent video. I absolutely love the collaboration!
I think I remember reading somewhere that you could use a laser to engrave rubber and make a stamp, would love to see you 2 give it a try!
@nzlemming
2 жыл бұрын
I think that would smell really bad (and possibly be poisonous). I'd engrave wood or glass at the deepest setting, then use that as a mold for silicone to make the stamp. That way, you could make plenty of stamps with only one laser session. That said, engraving isn't very deep so it might be better to use NPH's 3D printer to make the negative mold for pouring silicone into.
Should totally etch a onto silverware for your own custom house logo. Lol, Sir Neil Harris

Aww thank you! I really love being able to bring more people into cool tech things.
There are a lot of things you can do with one of these. One thing that is fun is to engrave a design onto a piece of cast ( not extruded) acrylic and then 3D print a box to mount it in on one edge. Inside the box put a strip of LEDs so they shine up through the edge of the acrylic and it will only show where the etching has taken place. Makes it so your design is floating in the middle of the piece of acrylic. For added fun get a set of color changing LEDs and have it slowly go through the colors as it sits on the shelf.
If you export the silhouette of your family, like people do when making custom photo pumpkins, you can etch faces into things. Also play with the interlocking boxes you can make. Your organizational life will thank you.
Neil should design parts for magic tricks with it or make a large playing card for the reveal of a force type card trick.
I would love if NPH had a KZread channel where he showed himself learning all these new toys and his journey as a maker!
Custom etch the connect four pieces behind you.
I had a bunch of fun making a haunted mansion sign on my Glowforge this Halloween. “Welcome Foolish Mortals to Funhouse Farm(s?)”. Would be a good future project.
I used my laser cutter to make custom scrollwork and embellishments for my MIL's grandfather clock. Given those baroque picture frames you printed, I thought you might like the laser's ability to engrave very intricate embellishments.
Laser engraving 3D printed parts would be fun. I was very happy to wake up and find this video.

I'm very happy you found it! I like this idea - in fact - I have some purge blocks that I had an idea with. Going to flood them / cover them in resin. Then, slice into thin shapes, that then get connected together for something. I know Joe at Breaks n Makes did something like this, but without the lasering. I need to laser these :)

@@3DPrintingNerd there isn't a single thing that can't be improved with lasers! I'm always joking with my team that everything can be improved with lasers and magnets. We do use lasers in some places for our product manufacturing. While developing our latest product we were struggling with something and ended up solving it with some laser processing. That made me doubly happy. Problem solved, and lasers!
You can Laser etch a pane of glass with a family portrait. Put it in a shadow box and light it from behind.
I've seen people do some awesome stuff with ceramic tiles, depending on what you want you can paint them and do a reverse image that burns off the paint leaving the white underneath, one guy used 2 layers of paint, and was able to burn off just the top layer which was black, and then more power to burn off the second layer which was a green, leaving it with a very cool tri-color image. that unit might be powerful enough to actually etch a white tile on its own.
I've met Joel, and NPH was in a movie with Kevin Bacon, so my Kevin Bacon number is now 2. Totally how that works, right?
tumbers look great too, his logo might go great on a black coated stainless tumbler.
Mirrors are cool to do. Had a friend in the mid 80's that chemical etched mirrors, then would put colored film on the back of the mirror surface. He would light the back of the mirror. You can use runes and Keltic patterns to make magical mirrors. You can use different colors for different runes ect. (Added) You can chemical etch the glass after cleaning the laser passed glass. This will rough up the surface of the glass, it will diffuse the light better and give the pattern a glowing look to it. Use a test piece of mirror to check and see if the etching chemical will remove or blur the mirror backing edges. Have fun with your new toy!

I really, REALLY like this idea.
I love my Glowforge especially now you can get them in the UK! Sharing this to my Glowforge UK Facebook group! Loved you in Starship Troopers NPH!
Joel, thank you for never referring to it as a laser printer. 👍
(For Neil Patrick Harris) Alright, here is my suggestion to laser cut. Laser cut the whole stage and all characters from your 2013 Tony Awards opening and then reenact the whole performace with all your new miniatures :P. To this day I just absolutely love that opening!
And old trick I learned when I was a kid (Navy brat so learned to move/clean up from moves) is to get firm (not rock hard) to use an art gum eraser and it will take the stickum off and since it is a GUM eraser (no abrasive) it will not harm wood finish (if you do NOT go crazy with the pressure).

@@tiffanysandmeier4753 You can get a CNC router or FDM printer, and get a laser add-on for it. You'll need glasses, as you won't have an enclosure, but it'll be a lot cheaper.

@@S_Roach I don't trust those. Most are only powerful enough to engrave, and they really need an enclosure and exhaust system.

You and me both.
Etch a family photo on plexyglass (cast acrylic sheet not rolled) and put it on A lighted base. This will make the etching glow. The reason for using cast sheet is to prevent cracking or shattering during the etch and cut phase, rolled sheet has stresses locked into the crystalline structure of the polymer that can release during cuts/etching.
Images on the connect 4 pieces behind you. First that builds the complete picture wins an ice cream.
Hey Joel! Hey Neil! Awesome collaboration! There are so many things you can use. There are some that can be a danger like a few have commented like PVC, vinyl, etc...Maybe come up with the most requested list on the video, twitter or instagram. The real question is how would you benefit with the Glowforge by making your own creations for whatever projects you haves coming up.
Now we need Joel and Neal playing laser tag.
@3DPrintingNerd
2 жыл бұрын
OMG YES.
The thing I did recently was I laser a path around some lettering on acrylic that was enough to score the protective paper/plastic and then I peeled that off. Then I airbrushed the lettering that I had removed because the rest of the surface was effectively masked off. I gave it primer, paint and a protective acrylic coat then removed the rest of the protective cover. I was able to get super fine detail that I would not have been able to with something like vinyl lettering
Why is this so wholesome??
You know..... I would love to see NPH laser etch a large version of the NPH Playing cards I got from Theory 11! That was a really beautiful deck of cards. I enjoyed the "Magic" included but unfortunetly for me, I was a few years late to the party and missed out on the "Prize". It was still a fun journey tho!! Thank you NPH!! So, imo... A GIANT NPH Playing card on a full sheet of Cherry would look amazing!

You could Etch the glass side panel on a computer or even the metal panels... You could make some amazing drink coasters with metal or cork or both. I'd love to own one of those. It's not to overly expensive at 5k.
I could never afford a Glowforge but the one thing that I really like about it is the camera, too line up your material, like that jar lid, perfectly. With my lasers there's a little guessing involved and it's not always exactly where I want it.
@3DPrintingNerd

The camera COULD be a bit more precise, and I'm not sure if it needs more megapixels, or if the routine to unbend the wide angle image needs a little tweaking. That said, it's VERY GOOD, but there is always room for improvement.
