    Every element heavier than iron was formed in the heart of a dying star so...

  • @Raptor828

    @Raptor828

    5 жыл бұрын

    totally wrong. these elements are not formed in the heart of these stars. And also, they are not always formed when a Star dies. A Supernova doesnt mean certain death, because the star might continue its life as a neutron star. Furthermore, these heavy elements are not only formed in supernovae, but also in the outer layers of lighter stars that are in their giant-phase.

    @Raptor828 You are completely wrong. Elements more massive than iron *must* be formed during the "death" of a very massive star or as a result of beta radiation within a very massive star. Also, neutron stars are no longer "alive". They are just as dead as a white dwarf. Furthermore, thermonuclear fusion can only occur in the core of a star. That means your nonsense (about heavy elements forming in the outer layers) is completely ignorant.

  • @Raptor828

    @Raptor828

    5 жыл бұрын

    @GDI well it depends what you define as death of course. Since Neutron Stars and White Dwarfs still have radiation, they are "alive", just in a different form than before. There are 2 ways to get heavier elements than iron: First, the r-process, where these atoms are created by decay, not fusion. The exact location within a star where this happens is not yet known, but its not at the core, because the core at that time is already in a degenerate state. Second, the s-process, which happens in red giants, where these elements are also synthesized by decay, not fusion. So you are the one talking nonsense here...

  • @Monochromicornicopia

    @Monochromicornicopia

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Raptor828 The entire scientific community defines a star to be "alive" while it is undergoing thermonuclear fusion (converting less massive elements into more massive elements). The exact location within a star where this happens is not a hotly debated topic. The entire scientific community knows it occurs within the core, because we know the conditions required for fusion only exist in the core. Your quote: _"elements are also synthesized by decay, not fusion"_ - Not only have I already mentioned beta decay/capture, but this would also occur within the core of the star or during a supernova.

    Tyson's answer is scientifically more fun. I love him for researching it....But yes, it's magic that keeps that hammer down. There's no way Cap could even slightly budge that hammer if it was all about mass and gravity. Still, again. I love that Tyson looked into it, and just decided(of course he did this on purpose) to ignore a preposition.

  • @LongToad

    @LongToad

    Yeah, it was all for fun. If it weighed as much as Tyson said there would've been some disastrous results over the various movies- with it falling through pretty much everything Thor put it on. Then again, a lot of stuff in these movies don't make a lot of sense- like the god of Thunder being inhibited by a static charge in Thor: Ragnarok.

    Not just falling, the hammer would theoritically have greater gravity than earth. O_O. Imagine the hammer actually pulling people towards it. edit: since it's more denser than earth it would more right to say that Earth would fall towards the hammer.

    Guy Person it was clarified in Infinity War that is not made with the heart of a dying star as a material. The heart of a dying star is what powers the forge of Nidavellir, the actual metal Mjolnir and Stormbreaker are made out of is not known, for now at least. Edit: according to Norse Mythology, is made out of an iron-gold alloy that the dwarven brothers (Eitri and Brokkr) threw in the forge.

Even the old Norse pagan beliefs were loose and varied from place to place. It wasn't even codified (if you can call it that) till Snurri Sturluson in the early 13th century.

But normal unworthy beings couldn't lift it not because its "heavy and dense", its simply because its cast with magic that forbids them from picking it up.

    It's not magic. There is no magic in the MCU. Just because there are things we don't understand yet, does not make it magic. Easy Example: Imagine you were a person from the 18th century and held a smartphone in your hand. Clearly a work of god, right? Well, we know better. In the future, try to look at things from another perspective! :)

    Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Thor in Thor 1: “Your ancestors called it magic, but you call it science. I come from a land where they are one and the same.” After all, magic is just science that we do not understand yet, any magic that is real, is not magic but science. If you refer to the "multiple upon multiple of occasions" as Dr. Strange, watch the movie again and again until you understand what the "magic" actually is, because it is in fact not magic. :) And I was refering to Thor's hammer and the spell on it, just because we don't understand, does not mean that it is beyond. What they could refer to as magic, could just be advanced technology beyond them. Again, I want you to really dig into the meanings of magic and science and how they stand to each other.

    As speculated by other science Geeks, it's believed Thor's hammer contains a hence undiscovered particle called a graviton. This is what allows it's mass to change at will. For instance, its mass can be very small and light as Thor spins the hammer. Then the mass can become absolutely huge and heavy and it will propel Thor through the air. It's only through Thor's immense strength and durability that the hammer does not rip his arm off as he goes flying through the air. Neat stuff.

    If you mean gravitonium (the element that creates graviton in AOS) then yes it could well be a factor. It wouldn't be the most ridiculous theory. Maybe the dying star is needed to melt the ingots as shown in infinity war with stormbreaker but it could also expel some very small quantities of gravitonium from within the star which would then be infused/contained within the hammer? if you wanna go down the more realistic road rather than "it's magic bro"

    The hammer can weigh 1 pound or a 1000 pounds but what allows a person to lift the hammer is the fact that their heart and their will to protect the greater good must out weigh their own personal greed and desires. Such as how Captain America chose to save the greater good instead of having what he desired the most, the right dancing partner.

    The problem with the idea of Mjolnir being Neutronium (Neutron Star Matter. Basically, all the protons, and electrons fused into Neutrons, so it's a massive nucleus) is in The Avengers "Hulk couldn't lif it." In the hanger of the Helicarrier. I don't think it's Mass, because suddenly taking the extra mass of 18 thousand billion tons when he set it down (And therefore somehow it reverted to it's normal Weight) then the Helicarrier engines would probably have to work a bit harder. Remember, this is the scene where 1 of the engines is being restarted by Stark, and if they lost another, they would be flying like a cartoon Anvil? (How do you think they get up there in the first place?) Well, that's when he set down the hammer, Hulk couldn't lift, and added an extra 18,000,000,000 tons of mass to the ship that could barely stay in the air as it is.

    Iron is death for a star. That's ultimately causes it, fusion gets to Iron, it can't fuse any further, and collapses. Carbon is in there too, but Steel is Tempered by Heat, and Pressure. So, it could (Hypothetically, we're talking about a comic book adaption of a myth here) just be very dense-ultra tempered steel.

    I don't see why people are claiming it to be a magic hammer. It's obvious a miniature space ship with some added artificial intelligence that determines who can use it. It can be seen flying around in space by itself in the movies. Given the engine strength required for this kind of flight, it would be super easy for the hammer to stay stationary if it wanted to, no matter how much you jank at it. The engines is also why it's such a powerful weapon; it assists with the swings.

    I always thought the hammer had sentience and could detect when someone "worthy" came into contact with it, at least that's how the comics and cartoons always portrayed Mjolnir. Giving the hammer meaning and a scientific explanation in a way takes the mystical properties of the hammer away and just leaves it as a really heavy hammer from space. But you can tell Neil's having a blast attempting to make sense of the already confusing as fuck Marvel Universe.

    Well, according to Doctor Who, Dwarfstar Alloy is so dense that it halts the flow of time itself. Coat your ship in it to carry a load of time sensitives as slaves and you have the heaviest ship in existence, getting stuck in a rapidly-shrinking spatial anomaly (Warrior's Gate episode, old series).

    They’re both right. It’s a trick question. The hammer is Tyson’s calculated weight if you are *not* worthy. Not accounting for the movement of the planets, the hammer cannot be moved from its point in space unless you can lift Tyson’s calculated weight. However, the hammer is around 40 pounds if you *are* worthy.

  • @josephevans711

    Thor's hammer has always been about the strength of someone character and worthiness of the soul in order to lift it, so it would probably paralyze one muscle and making it seems heavy and unbudgeable when an unworthy soul would try to lift it, It was never really about its weight, but at the same time in the first Thor movie, it seemed to be about its weight because not even a bulldozer could budge it.

    It's not that Thor's hammer is heavy. I mean, it's a big dense chunk of metal, it's got some good heft, but the reason it can't be lifted is because the hammer chooses not to be lifted. It anchors itself in its location in reality via magic. Also, formed IN a dying star, not OF a dying star. As in, the forge is located in one so it can use the star's heat to make cool things like magical hammers.

    yes it is made out of uru a metal that has a boiling point so high that it can only be achieved in a dying star. but the reason that no one can pick it up is bcz of magic. Mjolnir is enchanted just like Storm Breaker. only the worthy can pick it up, being worthy depends on some comics but generally not being evil is worthy. but thats not always the case lol. i recommend people read Thor comics he is one of my favorite marvel heroes and has many many amazing stories and adventures in the comics.

That said, I like how Tyson makes science both interesting and fun. I'd like to see his explanation on the binding of Fenris.
