I thought same. Maybe we'll hear how many would have been on it.. one article said 31,000 cars per day. The CA 1989 earthquake happened during peak rush hour - I remember photos of cars mashed under the collapsed 2-level Nimitz Freeway .. over 40 people died/were crushed.

Dundalk resident here, Turner Station and this bridge are right in my backyard. I go over this bridge twice every day of the work week. I'm in complete and utter shock, still haven't fully processed this. Woke up to the sound of rescue helicopters flying over my house this morning. I’m from Fernandina Beach FL. Another beautiful little island. When I was about 12, my uncle had a graduation ceremony with the Navy Seals and my family went to support his success. Anyways, I know things are a far cry today from how they were in the late 80’s but when we visited I fell in love with Coronado Island. Having grown up on the little southern most sea island of the east coast; Coronado Island felt like home but way cooler. I remember seeing the succulent ladened landscaping along the highway overpass and being so enamored at how lush and beautiful everything was. I fell so in love that I had set myself the goal of being able to move there one day. Unfortunately, life had different plans for me. I’m grateful for the experience and for the fact that I am so fortunate to be a Florida native.

After mum passed 4 years ago my 1 sister tried to forge a relationship with me but she had given me so much grief most of my life I told her I am perfectly ok not interrupting for the remainder of our existence & the next time we see one another may be when we are deceased or dying. She apparently fell ill 2 years ago & I refused to budge until I learned she was moved to a hospice. When I went to go see her she was on a morphine drip & already transitioning. She passed within 48 hrs of cancer. It's been almost 2 years & I have not forgiven myself for being so cruel & stubborn & the grief some days is just unbearable. I am so mentally stuck it's unbelievable. I am supposed to be making an appointment to see a therapist.

I've really been enjoying the local news coverage of this event. It beats the national coverage far and away. I like hearing the local insights, particularly Scott sharing just how personal this tragedy is for him and so many of those who live around the bridge. National News shies away from broadcasting REAL locals who speak like REAL people. All people, no matter how they sound or speak, or what opinion they have to share, deserve to be heard--and this is what local news provides us. Thank WUSA9 and the team for your hard work! I'm from Chattanooga, TN. We have a lot of waterways here, too, surprisingly; in fact prior to TVA constructing the Chickamauga Dam, flooding was a frequent catastrophe that leveled the town every few decades. There's three bridges crossing the TN River (also known as the Mississippi River) into Chattanooga. One of them carries interstate connecting GA to TN (ATL to Chatt), as well as Nashville to Chatt to Knoxville. I can only imagine if any one of our beautiful bridges were to fail. Anyway, that to say this really strikes a chord in my heart. Particularly being a Namesake bridge, after a man who proceeded the forefathers in his belief in the dream of independence. May this bridge be rebuilt, as the Governor said, in memory of the bridge that came before and the people who died. I hope that Baltimore can rally and build a bigger and even more beautiful Francis Scott Key Bridge! Baltimore Strong ❤🩹

Thank you. I agree with your comment about Scott. As I was watching and listening to him I was thinking about what an excellent reporter he is. (I don't watch that channel so never saw him before.) I appreciate your other comments, too. I've lived in Baltimore for decades, but in my heart I'm a Cincinnatian through and through. Born and bred there, I always loved our views of the beautiful Ohio R. My hometown has at least four bridges, maybe five. Unless you fly, crossing some Ohio River bridge is the only way to access the South. I understand your feelings about your Chattanooga bridges. I hope the new Key Bridge is built much, much stronger. (I'm still in shock.)

Baltimore is the 3rd largest shipping port in the continental USA and that bridge is a major connecting point to I-95 that is mainly used by trucks hauling gasoline and hazardous materials. The bridge and port is a lifeline for the east coast and now the port is shut down for the foreseeable future until the wreckage is cleared and that could take months.

Based on several interviews about this tragedy, there must have been about 25 or less crew members on board which is normal for this type of container vessel. Also, the port of Baltimore and US coast guard according to maritime experts (retired captain/pilot and maritime lawyer interviewed) do not require or mandate tugs under or near the bridge. However, tugs could have definitely prevent this tragic incident.

He would be one of the people who boarded these massive ships to bring them in and out of the harbor. I talked to him, and he said it was the power going out. Once you lose power, you can not steer the ship. They even dropped the anchor to try and stop or slow down the ship.
@blitzmom2674
Ай бұрын
If the bridge was so vulnerable that one impact could bring it down, why weren't tugs accompanying the ship in case the ship developed problems? Sure it would add expense to the ship, but think of those lives. And the impact to Baltimore and the port and the cargo and shipping in the interim.
@NoelG702
Ай бұрын
@blitzmom2674 Tugs did bring it out to a certain distance. It's on the ship traffic data. No bridge would have withstood a direct hit on a main supporting pillar from a ship that large. That's not just me saying that, but lots of structural engineer experts. The bridge was completed in 1977. Cargo ships are double the size today that they were in the early 70's when the bridge was planned and building started.

How was it that if the bridge was so vulnerable that one impact to a pier would bring it down, why were there no redundancies? Shocking how one impact brought it down that quickly.

This was was predicted by the Simpsons cartoon back in 1996 episode
I am curious about who is the pilot of the ship?? Based on several interviews about this tragedy, there must have been about 25 or less crew members on board which is normal for this type of container vessel. Also, the port of Baltimore and US coast guard according to maritime experts (retired captain/pilot and maritime lawyer interviewed) do not require or mandate tugs under or near the bridge. However, tugs could have definitely prevent this tragic incident.

Its hard to believe I'm not from MD my my grandmother lived in Essex I took it every year, hard to believe its gone..
I live in Anne Arundel County, and while I haven’t needed to use the bridge every other day, I’ve used it plenty of times. Crazy to think about.

Yes, I'm now hyper aware of all the times I take bridges over water, pretty much every day. (We have 3 lakes and a river within 10 miles of me.)

@@user-wh5ir4fo4r The odds of this happening are very rare, but the odds of it happening with any one particular person on the bridge is astronomically rare. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
This is just so sad. I've lived in this area all my life and drove over the Key Bridge hundreds of times. My uncle is a former Baltimore Harbor pilot for 40 plus years, now retired. He would be one of the people who boarded these massive ships to bring them in and out of the harbor. I talked to him, and he said it was the power going out. Once you lose power, you can not steer the ship. They even dropped the anchor to try and stop or slow down the ship.

If the bridge was so vulnerable that one impact could bring it down, why weren't tugs accompanying the ship in case the ship developed problems? Sure it would add expense to the ship, but think of those lives. And the impact to Baltimore and the port and the cargo and shipping in the interim.

Maine has a bridge that is used in the same way and reason. The Cape,NH, Ma, and RI as well. I'm sure there are others. It's very concerning.

The two comment replies here are creepy. SUPER creepy. Goes to show there’s thirsty weirdos even during a tragedy. One guy even claims to know what her insides look like… Like what?
It’s has stop production for the warehouse I work at . My prayers are with the family’s 😢
We are sorry for this disaster,..hopefully there will not be many fatalities & no similar negligence will ever happen again. May God grant safety Amen😭😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏🙏

Very sad ☹️
What’s on the ship???!!!? Concerning. God bless all the people effected. This is unbelievably tragic and unimaginable. 🙏🏻😰

It is a typical container ship--you know, with containers on it with their customer's cargo inside. 😐
How was it that if the bridge was so vulnerable that one impact to a pier would bring it down, why were there no redundancies? Shouldn't there have been tugs to support the ship till it got PAST the bridge? And why were there no redundancies on the bridge structure itself? Shocking how one impact brought it down that quickly.
Scary thing to wake up to. I use that bridge regularly. Tragic. Prayers to all families impacted. Surreal that bridge isn't gonna be there. Our traffic is gonna be so screwed indefinitely.

I can only imagine how you all feel. As far as re-routing traffic for a long time, in a busy area, it's going to be a real challenge and hardship. 😢
Just another good reason for making the stuff America needs in America! Made in the USA means something for American citizens!
How horrific it must have been for the people on the cargo ship once the power went out & they realized that they were going to hit the bridge, causing mass casualties & near impossible rescues
This is so disastrous to the Maryland, Washington travel and military access. Probably why the cargo ship „accidentally“ rammed the bridge at night where no one could see it target the structure. How does a cargo ship miss the middle.
A boat took out the brige to a major population city? OK.
I was near there about a week ago!!! 😮
Prayers to all the construction workers and their families, dangerous enuff working on the highway at nite, then some idiots run a ship into the bridge!!!
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I bet they felt I. Last week neighborhoods had tree cut down an when it fell we heard it an it shook our whole house an we across the street
That cargo ship looks massive compared to that bridge!
