Neighborhood thugs go to war with the road department

Update since filming this! Another one of our neighbors stepped in and took over the road department before we were able to. He's very knowledgeable and experienced in road construction projects so he's a great fit, and Grumpy and I will be helping him out taking care of all the roads in our district. This is kind of best case scenario for us as the old people are out, someone who knows what they're doing is in, and we get to be involved without having to be fully responsible for the entire district.

We HAD back in the 1990's a GRAVEL ROAD that went by our Farm here in Northern Alberta. My Dad GRADED a 5 mile stretch of the road due to how bad it got. The County TRIED to take him to Court for "Severely Damaging a SECONDARY HIGHWAY". Well he was smart to take a camera and take pictures of how the road was and how it was after he was done. Thankfully(due to some weird luck), the Judge was the TRAINEE that my Dad trained to take over his grading Job 30 years PRIOR.

Sounds like the judge should have recused himself. Of course he would rule in favor of his trainer. By not doing so it would invalidate his own education & experience in the grading field, thereby putting his work as a grader into question. The judge had a personal interest in the case. He should have recused himself.

@@INEVURLOSE He did. He got another Judge to take the case. The Original Judge testified on my Dad's side that the roadwork was done in accordance with Road Allowance Regulations. Since i have land in the country and a tow house, i deal with city BS. They chipped and sealed my road which was in perfect condition. Unlike the roads on the ither side of town which are in crater shape! All they had to do was fix their traffic problem they created which turned a residential road into a main road, not purposely, to where its a challenge getting in and out of my driveway. All because people want to avoid traffic! Takes actually less time to go the proper route hitting ever red light! Have to love government politics and screwing up things that were just fine.

Man, this reminds me of my back alley in the city. Our street has cookie cutter houses all the exact same. Our houses all have garages or garage pads with back alley access only. So when it snows the city often runs a truck with a blade down the center of the alley and frequently leaves a nice 2-3ft ice Hill in front of everyone's garages. So if we are lucky 3 of us on the street get our snowblowers out and clear the alley so it prevents these giant ice dams before they are built. I spent 4 1/2 hours one night already this winter blowing snow because it took 3 days before the city got to our alley and most peoples vehicles were trapped in their garages. I can truly feel you guys pain in this. It's frustrating to say the least

I live in Vermont where the law says that if you choose to live on a private road then you are REQUIRED to contribute to its maintenance. The dirt road is about 1/4 mile long and cuts across rugged mountain terrain. The road has twelve culverts and lots of ditching. There have been problems over the years with some neighbors, mostly seasonal people, refusing to contribute to keeping the road fixed. These are the same people who whine that the road is potholed, washed out, not plowed or blocked with a downed tree. There are twelve members of our road co-operative now and we have just laid down about $10,000 worth of stay-mat after having the road properly graded. One neighbor, who thought he was doing the right thing, did a lot of damage to the road with a makeshift tractor-grader and he has been warned not to bring his rig back onto the road ever. I also warned the same neighbor that if he pushes any more rocks into my front drainage ditches he is going to find them piled against his front door. I just spent $1200 to grade and stay-mat my very steep driveway and another $1100 to replace a damaged culvert that crosses the road near the east side of my driveway. I had previously replaced another culvert on the west side of my driveway so the cooperative members took that in good faith and exempted me from the road stay-mat fix. As you've guessed our road is private and no town official is allowed any say as to how we fix it. It is a fifty foot wide private right-of-way and we are taking good care of it. I spend a lot of time every summer cutting brush and trees away from the road so we don't have so many trees down across it in our wicked winters. Road cooperatives CAN work!

This reminds me of when I was living on the farm. We had lots of dirt roads probably more than paved, when one town supervisor retired the next elected supervisor didn't like crowned dirt roads, which are designed so water on the road could run off into the ditches. He came along and graded all the dirt roads in town so they were flat. The next spring with all the snow melt and rain most of the roads washed out and became pretty much impassable. He didn't last long as supervisor.

Now imagine this, you are responsible for taking care of your own road; you want to do the best with the least amount of time, money, and fuel. It seems pessimistic, but the county road workers do not have the same incentive as those who maintain private roads. The worse job they do in maintaining the roads properly, the sooner they will need maintenance and the more job security for them.

Yep, I feel for ya. I live on a 1200 foot access road that three homes must maintain. I am the oldest of all the men and when I was working 12/14 hour days, I was the only one willing to keep the road in shape. I have lived here for 25 years and for about 20 of those I did 95% of the maintenance, even though the one neighbor has a small tractor like yours. The only thing he would do is scrape snow off during the winter. I did get the neighbors to pitch in and bring in 20 yards of gravel and leveled it all out with a hand rake. The road was looking pretty good if I do say so. Then I fixed up my own 200 feet of driveway. When the first snow came, about 6", the tractor neighbor got out there after I told him to not scrape all the way to the gravel and scraped a bunch of the gravel to the side of the road. THat was about 5 years ago, and I now only work my own driveway. I am done working on that access road and someone else will have to make repairs. I am 73 and have a very bad back from a couple of serious back injuries. Those younger guys are going to have to get off their butts and take care of it. I tried to explain to the tractor guy, we can drive on two inches of snow, you don't need to remove the snow all the way to the dirt and in the process scrape the gravel off to the sides. We have more gravel on the sides of the road than we have in the center. grrrrrr!!!!! Yes, I know just how y'all feel!

Although I get that working together against a common enemy builds loyalty and a good neighbourhood, it really sucks that the so called road department made such a mess of it. I was already wondering how you guys were going to deal with those fumblers! But yes, taking it over might not be the worst way to deal with that! Good luck getting that plan to work! (And I resent that remark about 50 year olds and starting up in the morning: I'm (just) over 50! ;-) )

I worked for an outfit that did the city's street paving plus the installation of the infrastructure beneath the street, water pipes ,sewer lines, storm pipe etc. I enjoyed the way you described the subtleties and importance of a proper subgrade. Having a good foundation is the only way to build anything that you want to last. Throwing stupid ( non-existent) money at your District's road problems won't solve them. It's good that you and 'ol Grumpy have the camaraderie and equipment to keep your section passable. Too bad you have to spend your time and resources trying to undo what the knuckleheads did. With that being said, on the subject of subgrading ,I'll end with a quote from my old "motorgrader yogi," Bob was his name. Bob told me " Pete, don't ever dig a hole to fill a hole." " 'cuz now you have another hole to fill up." "Go scratch you some dirt off a high spot."

Casey something people do not understand that as the transition point is the breaking and acceleration is at its maximum the sub base needs to be more stable. I cannot believe they did not put any tail out drains along the road and most of all they did not use a grader. Good job and excellent explanations once again.

My family lives on a horrific road, low spots became holes that grew across 90% of the road to where its basically washed out now, rutted, full of holes and mud. My brother in law has been using his tractor to fix it as best he could but no one who lives on the road will help him, and no one will buy gravel and we are too poor. He had a heart attack a few years back and cant do it as much. Without rock, it just falls apart after he grades it. State refuses to fix the road no matter how bad it gets because a few of the land owners on the road refused to sign a petition allowing them to, most of which do not actually live on the road anymore. Its so easy to lose faith in humanity with neighbors like this.

Your dirt and gravel road is smoother than the paved roads in my neighborhood in a unincorporated area of Tucson. In 50 years the road has never been repaved. It's just a quilt of filled potholes and patches.

Seeing the thumbnail for the follow up video saying: "We're in charge now!" with some heavy machinery, got me exited to see what should have been done in the first place!

The hiway crew in the Yukon use to put gravel down on my driveway in spring and plow it in winter because I let them park their equipment at my cabin when they're out there working! My driveway was one and a half miles long! They didn't have to worry about vandalism of the equipment! It would be sitting there for 2-3 weeks at a time!

Where I live we have boulders protruding out of the road and the county wont touch them , so we drag and fill where needed and hope for the best. There are places where when it rains, it turns into a swamp withb10" of slimy muck. Everyone here must have a high clearance 4×4. Great vid. County plans never make things better.

In my home county the townships or divisions of the county were in charge of the gravel roads. Some of the gravel roads were county roads and the smaller roads like the one in this video were township roads. The county set up a county garage in each township and Gravel and tar roads were maintained. Snow removal in winter and gravel in summer along with junk pick up and disposal. It costs money and the townships are the place to start placing responsibility for infrastructure of road maintenance equipment and the hiring of crew and mechanics. But, it is sometimes hard to get bureaucrats to agree. It takes some sort of a political movement to make these things happen. Congress and State senate need to be involved. There might be a certain amount of federal and state money appropriated for these things. Bridges, guardrails, signs, etc. People with skills need to be in the positions to make sound road decisions.

My dad got tired of driving on a crappy road and stole the township blade before he had our 5 miles fixed the board members stopped him and asked if he wanted a job 27 years later he just trained his replacement the best people for the job is farmers or people who live on the roads and understand where the water needs to go and how to get it there not government officials hell even the county engineer couldn't figure out if you put a culvert straight across a road where a ditch hit it at an angle it wouldn't work when replacing a small bridge
