NEFL Eagle Cam: "Rocket & Jasper Have a Visitor!"

NEFL Eagle Cam 05/12/2022: Rocket and Jasper are waiting for their dinner order to arrive - but today their DoorDash driver is followed in by another fledgling bald eagle! The next hour provides them with some interesting experiences. There are several other nests in the vicinity where this youngster could be growing up and perhaps seeing Samson flying by with such a big fish was just too tempting to resist, like a kid following an ice cream truck. 😄 Last season Legacy paid a similar visit to another eagle nest down the coast, so you could also use the old saying that turnabout is fair play!
Thanks as always to our wonderful cam-ops!

    Samson has been such an amazing partner and dad - wherever he is and whatever has happened he has given the world 5 beautiful youngsters. He will not be forgotten. It has certainly been challenging to view the recent events, but it looks like a new chapter is opening and we can hope for happiness and hope to return to the old nest-tree that has seen so much.

    I have never seen that in all my years watching eagle cams! I've seen invaders in nest trees or flying around but they were always Subadults! It's a tough world out there for all fledglings and Subadults. This young one was obviously hungry poor little one. I'm amazed Samson left allowing the foster Juvie to be on the nest!Great post and very brave eaglets protecting their dinner and home!

    It's thought that Legacy visited two fledglings in a neighborhood nest last year (a "mystery" third fledgling was spotted in that nest and was chased away, and shortly afterward Legacy came zooming home to this nest with an adult eagle in pursuit) - so it may happen more often than we know! We have so much still to learn about their world. 😃

    Yes it was! I suspect Samson knew instinctively there was no serious danger at that point and the youngsters could indeed figure it out. The visitor appeared quite surprised that there were other eaglets waiting in the nest after following Samson in - like "Oh what have I gotten myself into?" It actually returned the next morning and hung out with Jasper and Rocket for a little bit (all perched on separate branches) until Rocket said "That's enough, you should go now." Eagles are quite social birds when not defending a nest, perhaps they're out there exploring the world together now!

Maybe the Visitor is shadowing Samson to learn how to become a great fisherman, father, and provider for his future family. You might as well learn from the best. I'm going to enjoy putting this on repeat. The silent commentary was so very fitting and made the case scenario much more funnier. Yes Samson clearly chose not to intervene - for one thing it's hard enough to get away with his legs and talons intact when it's just his two hungry kids going for the fish 😄 - and I suspect he knew the fledgling visitor was not a serious threat and that the kids could work it out. If an older eagle had flown in I think we'd have seen quite a different scene! If you see this in time to rewind, the visitor returned this morning, in the nest at about 06:31 nest time and (on Cam 2) perched in the tree along with our two at about 06:59.

I thought Jasper will take the lead and fight with the intruder but no, was Rocky Rocket. I was happy seeing him like this because for his survival he needs to be agresive like his sis. • @cmitchell8106

    @cmitchell8106

    2 жыл бұрын

    NEFL eagles are not banded so the "visit" could not be confirmed by a band, but it sure seemed like the overwhelming probability from the events and the time sequence. The story: Legacy had not been seen in the nest for several days. On the morning of May 1st, the people who live near a nest several miles away called an Eagle Watch nest monitor (who also volunteers for AEF) to report that their two-fledgling nest had THREE fledglings hanging out! Just about the time she arrived to check it out, the parent-eagles at the other nest chased off the third youngster. In just about the right time frame for an eagle flight between the two nests, Legacy appeared back at the NEFL nest tree going full speed with an adult eagle in pursuit. Here's my video from the day kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKSqtbChc6-slZM.html In my original description I was guessing maybe it was a parent following Legacy, but putting the events at both nests together and the speed the adult was going I'm guessing it was one of the other nest's parents saying, "That's right - go home and STAY home!!!" (Or it still could have been Sam or Gabby saying "Yes that's right, come on home and don't bother those other eagles!") Legacy stayed closer to home until leaving for good, and the mystery-fledgling was not reported again at the other nest. (The other nest does not have a cam but the folks describing the events there are reliable.) So no, no 100% proof, but it surely fits together! Interesting info about the Eagle Watch program + a map of the amazing number of bald eagle nests in Florida at this link: cbop.audubon.org/conservation/about-eaglewatch-program

    They're excellent and resourceful scavengers as well as hunters - a lot of their first year while they learn those hunting skills they'll get by on carrion, scraps they can steal from other raptors, pretty much anything edible that they can find. This one already showed some initiative spotting and following Samson - it's learning quickly!

    Does anyone know how far this nest is from SWFL nest? Could this be E20 that departed his nest on May 17th?

    200+ miles, & this occurred before E20 left - a number of people asked if it could be E19, and I won't say anything is impossible with those magnificent wings but it's much more likely it was from one of the "neighborhood" nests along the Atlantic coast that are within a few miles of this one. The number of bald eagles nests in Florida is really something to see - map at this link: cbop.audubon.org/conservation/about-eaglewatch-program 😀

    No, unless they make a return visit to the nest we won't know for sure where they are - we can only wish them well on their journey and look forward to a new nesting season beginning in the fall. Local eagle watchers keep an eye on the area and post updates of any sightings - an eagle that was probably Samson was spotted not far away Monday and again today. (You can see the pictures taken from the ground in the updates box at nefleaglecam.org ) However, if a fledgling was spotted in the area but away from the nest there would be no way to be 100% sure it was one of "ours." The young ones may travel a long way from the nest soon after starting their big adventure - for example banded eagles from the Smoky Mountains have been spotted and ID'd hundreds of miles away, see link for one who went from Sevier County Tennessee all the way to Michigan for the summer 😀: tinyurl.com/yhzh3vm2

    Probably not as the nests are over 200 miles apart - but it's fun to imagine as their wings can take them a long way. More likely it's a fledgling from one of the other nests that are closer to this one. There are more than 1,000 known bald eagle nests in Florida so there are lots of fledglings out there exploring the world right now! Here's a link with a map that shows where nests have been documented: cbop.audubon.org/conservation/about-eaglewatch-program

    The visitor was the one forced out off the right side of the nest on the first visit and it decided to fly off on its own following Samson on the second visit. Our two "held the fort" in their nest - as Samson apparently trusted them to be able to do! 😀 The visitor was back this morning - if you see this in time to rewind, it arrives at the nest at around 06:32 nest time, gets chased away, and then at around 06:59 on Cam 2 you can see all three fledglings perching in the nest tree at the same time before Rocket chases the visitor off again. Looks like this may be an ongoing adventure!

    Looks like a this-season eaglet so too young for Legacy. That was asked in AEF chat this evening and the mods were in agreement that it appears to be a fledgling the age of our current two. Legacy paid a similar visit to a nest a little way down the coast last year and got chased home - there are several active nests in the vicinity this one could be from. Eagles are social birds when not raising their young - but Rocket and Jasper weren't about to open the pantry door to sharing their dinner with this one! 😄

    Too young for Legacy - this appears to be a this-season fledgling about the same age as Jasper and Rocket. There are several other eagle nests in the vicinity with youngsters getting out and exploring the neighborhood. Eagles are social birds (when not eating or building a nest/raising their young) - these young ones may even wind up all hanging out together when it is not a matter of being jealous of their own nest. I feel sure our Legacy is flourishing out there wherever she is, though!
