Some thoughts from a Necromunda player: first off, the Hive War set is a good buy for someone interested in trying out the game, especially if they like the looks of one or both gangs included in the set… BUT I want to add a few of my own caveats to your comments: 1) I’m 99.9% sure that the rule book in the Hive War box is a stripped down version of the full rule book. If you are intending to playing Necromunda regularly, you will need to buy the hardcover rule book sooner rather than later. 2) The quantity of Zone Mortalis terrain in that box is anemic. I’ve built it all and it is essentially one square room’s worth of walls; nowhere near enough for a decent game. The extra scatter terrain/terminal sprue helps but you won’t have enough terrain from the Hive War box for a decent layout on a 3x3 playing area. I’ve since bought the ZM set with the doors and the Gang Hideout box and feel like that’s a decent start… as long as you use it for 2D Space Hulk layouts. If you want to play in 3 dimensions, you will need a metric ton of that terrain which will drain your bank account *fast*. A buddy of mine bought THREE sets of Dark Uprising for the terrain and even that wasn’t enough to build out a decent 3D board with any verticality. Don’t fall for it! Get the gang hideout, but I’d also strongly consider regular 40K terrain or 3D terrain from other companies, or make it yourself. The Zone Mortalis terrain is best for just that: single-story, 2D Space Hulk style scenarios. 3) unit cards: you don’t need them (from GW). YakTribe has gang management tools that are just *chef’s kiss* perfect, including printable unit cards that are all you need. The GW ones aren’t really necessary. YakTribe also provides campaign tools that are fantastic as well. 4) The House books are required purchases. You can’t play Necromunda with the $60 rule book and a $42 gang box. You’ll also have to buy the “House of…” book or you won’t have any rules to build your gang! You’re looking at around $150 to get started no matter how you try and do it, and imho, if you buy Hive War, you’ll still have to buy the hardcover rule book and “House of” rule book for your gang. Until very recently you also would have needed to buy the almost entirely obsolete “Gangs of the Underhive” book, just for the Trading Post rules. Those have finally been made available as a free PDF from GW’s website. The Gangs of the Underhive was a decent purchase until they decided to make codex-style books for every House Gang. Necromunda was my first miniatures war game back mid-90’s and the new edition has a lot of differences. The power of the weapons and the complexity of the rules far out-strips the original version. Goonhammer.com has produced a set of House rules called “Lost Zone” that tones down the power-level of the game and attempts to bring the more down-trodden spirit of the 90’s game to the current Necromunda. It’s a free PDF and they’ve written numerous articles about it. I played Cawdor in the 90s and I’m still playing them now. As I said, the new rules are much more complex, but it’s refreshing that all the gangs are truly different from each other, which you couldn’t have said back in the old days. I’ve got flame templates, the heavy crossbow, long-rifle snipers and Chain-Glaives. I can bring some Redemptionists along too, when I want. The gangs I face off against are pretty scary, but I’ve got the tools to handle them… most of the time, lol. It’s a pretty crunchy game; almost RPG-like in its density of rules and story-telling, but if you’ve got the time for it, it can be rewarding! :-D

MrAndyPuppy yeah! I’ve seen people remove the Ork iconography and turn it into Necromunda terrain here on YT. It didn’t look too hard, so definitely worth considering.

War Hammer Man Studios no worries. I think you’re right about Hive War; it’s the best way to get into the game right now. For the beginner it’s an all-in-one solution except for the terrain. If they decide they like the game and want to dig deeper into the full campaign experience (which is what Necromunda is all about imho), they’ll need additional books. But at least there’s an affordable way to get started.

@@danroberts007 ya i think thats right. i'm not sure which gang rules are included in the hive war book though. i'm assumed it had all the base gangs, but may only have the two included. i know the dark uprising set (which i have). only had the corpse grinders and palanites.

The absolute basic is a gang from eBay and a free pdf of the rules... Then you make your own terrain from scrap for 0 and you're ready to play for a grand total of 20-40 $

I know this video is older, especially with ash wastes arriving, but this set was absolutely an amazing deal for GW compared to AW. Dark uprising was good as well but there was a lot more (minus the rule book). But I think this box set was superior in terms of a great deal for onboarding new players at a fantastic value. I think AW does a better job justifying a $250 price point than DU because it has the rule book.

I'm new to necromunda & like the look of the Mercator Nautica Syphoning Delegation models from FW. Could you plz tell me what battle reports they would likely be in as the more recent reports don't seem to be in??? I'm looking for ideas for gangs with these miniatures in them.

Excellent video mate! I have a question if anyone fancy's answering? I am away to purchase the hive war boxset, what books do i need ontop of this? I shall be using only the 2 gangs in the boxset with lot more 3d terrain so I would essentially like additional campaign rules and all available rules for the 2 gangs in the box set

house of shadow, and house of blades give you the expanded rules for delaque and escher. if you are interested in ash wastes, and vehicle rules/games, you would also need book of outlands. this will give you basically everything for the two gangs you have. cheers
