I've been doing the same thing for a while now and it all depends on where you live! More trash in cities than in suburbs, more in suburbs than rural areas. As for washing, a high grade detergent/degreaser like Super Clean will get everything clean enough to handle pretty quickly.

Disagree with the rural areas. Here, people love to litter and can't drive, so plastic is abundant. I've been too focused on getting it just right from the start. I think I'm going to start glueing stuff together and then covering the ugly parts. Maybe find a plan somewhere in the middle. See how that goes.

I'm certainly no car guy but I'm pretty sure most if not all of that roadside plastic is the bottom coverings from cars (skid plate/splash guard). It's the first thing to break off when you get a lot of potholes and ice chunks, and can come in some crazy shapes.

Genuinely more effective than "actual" recycling. Instead of -rotting- _failing to rot_ in the same landfill as the common trash, or going to join the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (now so large and permanent, it has its own ecosystem), you can make productive use of your plastic waste.

LOVE this method for collecting some good and properly random stuff! I don't get a lot of weird waste hard plastic in my household, so this looks like a good way to *quickly* pick up good shapes to sterilize clean and use! I have a scifi diorama I'd been building and you always give the best ideas for greebles and panels, and how to use things. Luckily for me, I DO have old hair elastics for my own long hair, and when they stop being stretchy this is a good use.
