Neck shot reaction .223 rem. - Roe deer hunting

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Usually I aim for the heart and lungs, as it is a bigger target. This time, I aimed for the neck. A neck shot should only be done at close range and when the shooter is in a stabile position, and is capable to take a precise aim.

Jessaroo Make sure your rifle is shooting at least an inch at 100 yards by bullet group size. Use partition soft points for meat body shots. If all you have is hollow points aka ballistic tips then neck shots only. They make a big mess tearing up the meat otherwise.

To all the people who say "it's unethical to hunt deer with 223".... Just look at the smoke exiting the other side of the deers neck. That thing was dead instantly. You can take deer 3 times the size of this little one easy inside 100 yards.

A couple questions, if I may? Does a shot like that break their necks? It sort of looked like it did. Curious if the indirect energy transfer (hydrostatic shock, temporary stretch cavity - whatever one might call it) from a really fast round like that can cause stout bones like vertebrae to break even when the bone was never directly hit. Pardon my ignorance; I don't hunt but I am interested in terminal ballistics so sometimes watch hunting videos to learn about different calibers. Also, from what I understand it is commonly accepted that the kicking around is indeed an autonomic response of a dead animal, as opposed to the thrashing of one that's still alive. But in a few hog videos I've watched, I've noticed that a hog killed with one of the bigger calibers (6.5 Grendel or larger) will drop and never move again half the time or more, where smaller rounds (.223/5.56) result in a thrashing animal almost 100% of the time. Are both the still animal and the kicking animal equally dead, but the larger caliber is just more likely to sever the CNS between the brain and the body, preventing nerve impulses from a glitching CNS causing movement? That's what I'm guessing, but I also wonder if maybe .223/5.56 ain't quite enough caliber for hog or deer and it does risk unnecessary suffering more often than not. 'Cause it certainly does seem the more stout the round, the less likely the animal will buck around.

  • @MortenSchultzHunting

    @MortenSchultzHunting

    3 жыл бұрын

Thanks for your comment, I will try anwer my best. Sometimes a deer will kick and sometimes not. I have shot pigeons head or neck completely gone, but they still flap around. A neckshot from a fast moving round will usually have so much kinetic energy, that the animal will get knocked out, like a high shoulder shot. To answer your question on caliber. For larger deer species, I would not use a 223/5.56. It can be done, but a small caliber and a large deer, leaves less room for error. Here in Denmark, the .223 is legal for roe deer and smaller game. Larger deer like fallow or red deer. You must use larger calibers, with much more energy.

  • @hummerstk

The kicking is the rest of the spinal reflexes. If the spin is hit, the neurological path from the brain to the muscles is cut. So if you would shot the heat, then there is still a working connection between the “brain” (even if it’s damaged) and the rest of the body. There is the likeliness of kicking very low, because the brain still tells what to do (the same to the elongated spinal cord) right behind the brain. So when you hit here the right position, then you have the typical extension cramps of the animals. These are kind of signs of destruction or male function in a certain area of the elongated spinal cord, the pyramidal track. If you cut the spin and the transmission there in the spinal cord below these areas and it is disrupted, then a spinal reflex takes over, because the brain can’t control the body anymore. This is the lowest of all reflexes even we have - the step reflex. It works so long til all oxygen in the cells are gone, it is to bring you in safety if you cannot move willingly. But necessarily it needs a working biological infrastructure! If you use bigger calibres then you could destroy the nerves along the spinal cord and no reflex is possible anymore. No movement is the best, then kicking, then extension cramps because this all (no movement not) needs energy and produces lactate. So the taste and the quality of the meat can be different.

Super video.

I actually just took a 90lb doe with my 12.5” 5.56 @ 60yds using the 64gn federal power shock round. I used this round because I tested it with a dozen others over the chrono and into water jugs and from that 12.5” it has the best results as far as velocity (2670fps) and expansion in the water jugs. Had a small 22 cal entry and a .5 exit wound. Deer dropped in its tracks and never even flinched once it was down. A lot of ppl discount the 223/5.56 as a deer hunting cartridge but with the proper shot placement ammo selection and reasonable distance they will absolutely get it done. Nice shot btw. Did you get an exit wound with the v-max? I have a 60gn v-Max hand load I was thinking about trying. It’s going 2990fps from my 14.5” barrel and about 80fps slower from my 12.5”.

The .223 is very under-rated, in my opinion. Here in Denmark, the law requires 800 Joules energy at 100m from the muzzle for roe deer. The .223 has typical 1600 Joules at the muzzle, and still 800 Joules at 200m. As you say, as long as you keep a reasonable distance, and use a good expanding bullet, it is fine. The V-max made a fist size exit hole on the neck. For a normal shoulder shot, I use 55 gr. GMX.

As a hunter, I just want to say that it is possible for an animal to be shot, imediatly fall onto the ground, and kick not because of unconscious muscle twitches but because it hurts so bad and there's no way to run away from the pain. You can't say that that doesn't happen. Always check to see if you really hit the central nervous system and if not, refer to a dissection so you can adjust your aim next time

Why not head shoot ? neck chuck meat the best in slow cook camp oven cast iron pot roast, we only head shoot all our red and rusa deer for meat, furtherest shot 320mt. So far. Usually 120mt to 200 mt with .243W 87gr Hornady VMax.

A lot of really good meat in the neck. Not a % shot. Much prefer the double lung.

A double lung is what I aim for 99% but in this case, the Vmax bullet and the tall vegetation, I took the neck.

Bonjour a tous du Canada Here north east Canada ( Q.C.) we can't hunt deer with .223 rem by the law for big game begins at 243 win. or 6mm remington and forbiden to use dog on big game

It's funny how different the hunting regulstions are. We can only use 223rem for roe deer. For the bigger deer like fallow or red deer, we can't even use .243, but must use 6,5x55 .308Win 30.06 or bigger. Here you must have a dog if you shoot birds with a shotgun, on land.. And if you shoot at a game and can't locate it, we have special trained dogs you can call for a small price.

60 lb is about the maximum size of a mature roe deer. This was a young one.

kinda scared to use a 223 for deer. i can see it working up to 100 yards on a lung or neck hit, but you gotta do a morning hunt incase it runs far. cant spend 5 hours tracking a lung shot deer in thick brush at and after sundown unless ur a hardcore son of a bitch
