    When tasting gins I like to pour an ounce and stir it in ice then serve it up. You get that dilution and you get to see how the flavors come out and possibly change as the gin warms up while you sip it.

    Very interesting video, Bobby! I have a liquor store near the house that lets me taste test new gins when they come in. I do so by pouring a little in the glass, swirling it around much like a fine wine, and sipping it neat. I will ask them to sprinkle a bit of water in it next time! Thanks for another great video!

    Hi Bobby, new subscriber from the States here. I really enjoy your review style and energy. Gin is my daily driver (single malt is for weekends and stressful days.) I was surprised by the fact that I didn’t see Nolet in your reviews, but I know there are so many gins out there that it may be a little overwhelming. Hopefully, you will get to it soon. Keep up the great work. Cheers!

    Hey MA, and welcome to my channel! It’s always nice to welcome viewers from the US! I haven’t heard of that one before ? Is it an American gin? I will definitely try to find some and feature it on the channel. Look out for tonight’s video, an American favourite, Seagrams! 👍👍

    When it comes to whiskey, it's a similar mentality. The oils seperate from the water and it ramps up the flavor of some whiskies a few drops can dramatically change the glass.

  • @skraegorn7317
    @skraegorn7317 Жыл бұрын

    For glassware, the bulb glass is great. A smaller wine glass like a white wine glass works nicely, although the Glencaign gin goblet works great. For stemless glassware their Canadian whisky glass works well, but I'd recommend their whisky nosing glass for barrel-aged gins. Just be sure not to make the mistake I did; get the standard size glass and not the wee blender's glass. The water trick is exactly what whisky drinkers will do, usually the rule of thumb is to get it down to about 35% ABV which lowers the ethanol burn and brings out the aromatics.

    Hey Bobby! Just gonna say, first, love the vids. Only seen a handful thus far but immediate subscription. Second, going through the comments and I don't think anyone has said it yet, but the water releases more flavors because a lot of the oils and stuff in the gin are alcohol soluble, thus are "trapped' (for lack of a better term) by the alcohol. The water lowers the alcohol content enough to release those oils and alcohol soluble compounds.

    Hey halo0rap First of all, thank you very much for subscribing and welcome to my channel my friend! Thanks very much also for your helpful comment. I knew that water releases the flavours but it’s extremely helpful to know a little more detail of exactly how that works. A lot of people ask me why I don’t drink it neat and I will definitely add this to my explanation now. Looking forward to lots more contributions in the future! 😊😊

    The problem with that is that you end up with a more flavourful (though I'd argue unbalanced) first sip, followed by a very boring rest of dram.

    What I'd suggest and it lends its hand from Whisky tasting is using the Whisky style Glencairn glass. It has stump and tulip shape glass. Just go to any good whisky review video (Ralfy.com). It let's you get a good nose on what you're drinking. Also taste the gin completely neat, then put the water in and taste to get a comparison. Enjoy your videos, keep it up!

    I love gin and all of the gin out there smells amazing, but gin and tonic, even though you are diluting it, it compliments the bitter tastes in gin which i don't like. Gin is like a spice for me, like mint or rosemary so i mix it with a proper fruit juice, real fruit juice. like minty lemonade, pineapple juice, orange juice, pomagranade juice or even store bought apple juice does the trick.

    That water trick is pretty key for drinking whiskey neat, too. Especially the really complex Scotches. Couple of questions: 1. Ever reviewed/tried barrel aged gins? 2. Do you have any thoughts on Akori?

    I find that it just waters it down from my experience. Even those big 2" clear-ice cubes water it down too much for my liking. I do use them on occasion for an old fashioned, or just on a hot day, but I drink it quick to avoid my booze getting too diluted. With that said, that's just my opinion, and lots of people really like the 2" ice cubes/spheres. But definitely use the large format ice, as regular ice cubes water your booze down waaaay too fast. I personally use the Glacio "clear-ice duo" which makes 2 ice cubes. It only makes 2 ice cubes at a time, but I don't use that much ice and it's not an issue for me. I use them for an occasional old fashioned cocktail.

    Have you ever had to tip a bottle of gin down the drain because it was so bad? I found a bottle extremely cheap. I should have known better because it tasted like methylated spirits. I wasn't even game to drink anymore other than a few sips. Down the drain it went.

    There are those that think 'drinking neat' is some kind of macho thing. I am not one of those. Nevertheless, spirit at 40% is the minimum strength for whisky and it can taste watered down at that strength. For years I felt that adding more tonic than gin was ruining the gin. You take a skilled distiller and water their product down to gin squash with an additional flavour. I want to taste what they make and the only way of doing that is to drink it neat which is how I do it in the privacy of my home. It's very easy to get used to the strength which in the gin world is not particularly high and more abv means more flavour. Use plain water if you need but remember that drinks manufacturers water it down to maximise profit. I'll have a large G&T in a bar in Spain on a hot day but unless it's an excellent bartender it's just gin squash. Learn to drink it neat and you will really discover your gin palate. Drinking gin neat is not badass, it just seems so after decades of conformity. Neat gin will take you to a whole new level of gin appreciation.
