I really love the pacing of this video, Matt! The different section quickly show casing the characteristic of the lens in each category makes it really easy to digest all the way to the comparison. This is the first 50mm lens I started shooting with after I picked up my M240. Optically it is clean and mechanically it is smooth. It is almost too clean like my Canon L glass on my work cameras. As soon as I started buying vintage Leica glass, this along with my 21mm 1.5 has been sitting on the shelf. I had full intension to get a whole set of TTartisan M mount prime and adapt them for video work while using them on my Leica, however, my attention (and budget) has been shifted heavily to vintage lenses. I am sure once I ran out of old fast glass to buy, I will get back on that goal, but right now, it is just too much fun to work with legacy lenses. With all that said, I really do enjoy this line up of TTartisan offerings.

Just going to throw this out there. Matt. I have seen you take awesome shots with such a wide variety of lenses, costing as low as around 40 bucks to thousands of dollars. Sure there have been a few that aren’t as good. Not every lens can be good. But I would say that most of them have produced super nice shots for you. Why? Because it’s more about the photographer and so much less than the lens. Sure. There are a few gems I have seen you use. Bottom line. Unless you are getting paid big money for shots or you are one of your Patrons with a private jet and other nice luxuries why would someone want to pay thousands of dollars for a lens just for bragging rights? Thank you for highlighting these lenses made for normal people. That lens does such a nice job. Most (and I mean 99 percent) wouldn’t know the difference between that and the overpriced one.

I had a TT Artisans 50 mm f/1.4 but sold it after testing it on my Leica digital CL and SL2 about 1.5 years ago. It wasn’t critically sharp at infinity, and exhibited more chromatic aberration than I tolerated back then. IIRC, the rangefinder cam is not guaranteed to be calibrated out of the box. If one has a digital M camera, they can accurately calibrate the lens. If they have only M film cameras, they’ll need to borrow someone’s digital M camera. It was indeed a bit heavy. I also tried three Voigtländer lenses at that time and thought they were a bit nicer. Matt, you compared this lens to a previous Leica Summilux-M 50 mm f/1.4. The latest Leica version (ASPH II) allows closer focusing (0.45 m vs. 0.7 m) and has more aperture blades (11 vs. 9). I recently purchased the new version and love it. It’s definitely pricey. The prices of TT Artisans lenses are certainly low (the 50 f/1.4 is on sale for $314), and I’ll try another one soon (but not the 50 1.4).

The inescapable conclusion in this case and all the others is that you get good photos regardless of what lens you use. As regards the TTArtisan vs the Leica, unless one is shooting for demanding clients, buy the TTArtisan. That means for about 95% or more of us out here the TTArtisan is the better choice. Lens looks good too, maybe a bit too sharp for portraits? Does feel a bit weird that they profit from the legacy and r&d that Leica has invested in, but on the other hand people that appreciate the Leica quality will still flock to it and it's nice to have cheaper alternatives that give more people the opportunity to take great photos ofcourse.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom It's so hard for me to shoot at f/1.4 to f/2.8 here in Texas. My M5 does fine at 500-1000th of a second, but even in the winter I am drowning in sun. I am guessing these ship from China, because nobody in the USA had the same price as the link you provided. I am excited, regardless. My 21 & 35mm's are Voigtlander. I just couldn't stomach another $800 lens just to get a 50mm. You saved me. Thank you. If I don't have a couple frames I can fire off in the M5 then I will do the TTArtisan focus chart with Scotch tape across the open shutter. I'll then snap a pic of the fake ground glass in the back of the Leica with my EOS R5 and a 100mm macro to see where the focus hits on a big computer screen. I think I will do that regardless, because I will then know that if a photo looks out of focus that it was my fault and not that of the lens not having been calibrated.

The problem with these lenses is the calibration. Normally if you have adjusted the lens on a digital Leica M, you do not have to do it again for the film Leica M because the flange focal distance (FFD also known as the flange-to-film distance), is the same : 27,8 mm. If you don't have a Leica M digital, all you have to do is ask a friend to lend you one. Great video as usual.

Very interesting, though the Leica seems to have seems to have higher contrast at the plain of focus, and lower contrast in the out of focus areas. Speaking of filter threads, the Leica’s hood and filter threads are held in place by one very small screw. Mine fell out, Leica USA doesn’t sell replacement screws, but insist that it be sent in to service, really, for the cost of shipping, insurance, and labor, I could buy a TTArtisan…😜

Yes, it's only recently become fashionable to do these. They did the 28mm LTM after I asked many times and Voigtlander have a few now too which is amazing. I have all mentioned LTM lenses. (and from LLL too)

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom But they don't produce the 35mm color skopar in ltm anymore. And finding a used one is quite the challenge if you don't want to import from japan. They could just sell a different mount for most of their lenses, every M-Mount lens is convertible with an exchange of the flange in theory.

what is the point of promoting "cheap" lenses made in china (an autocratic country) ? I would rather pay more for a Leica lens made in Germany and help preserve some industrial activity in Europe. Only Leica lenses go on my Leica cameras. Beware of short sighted thinking ...

That’s Chinese … for us: they are able to copy and even improve some things. It’s their way of making a compliment to the inventors by copying them. Before I buy a lens or other things made in autocratic or dictatorial countries I use what I have, save some money and buy a lens made in Germany, Japan or Portugal ... a bargain is not always an „amazing“ value when you look behind the scenes. Always good light!

@@jensruckert4763 Some (most) of these Chinese lenses aren't good, same as many Japanese and German lenses. This one happens to be a gem and a gem for pennies. The other one worth looking at is the 7Artisans 1.4/28 ASPH in M-Mount which is also available as the FE-Plus edition, optimised for the thicker Sony sensor stack. Many people want the "Leica Look" but can't afford it. Those who can afford it will just buy Leica. I honestly don't think these Chinese lenses will have any impact at all on Leica sales. If anything, it's much more likely Voigtlander and Zeiss are eating into Leica sales, the Zeiss Distagon 1.4/35 ASPH being a case in point. This isn't to achieve the Leica look though. These brands have their own specific drawing style, such as the Zeiss pop. Apart from the TTartisan 50mm, all my other manual focus primes are Carl Zeiss.

People who buy new Leica lenses aren't likely to replace them with TTartisan. Rather, the TTartisan's may compliment their Leica collection. People like me bought this TTArtisan 1.4/50 ASPH in Sony E-mount because it cost £109 Inc delivery, as new, open box deal. It's awesome by the way. Really good.

Always those cheap Chinese lenses... remember: NO social security, NO real income. So Chinese lenses will always be cheap as hell. Iwill buy Leica, because it's REAL pricing for European products. Besides I own 2 Voigtlander lenses but I will never buy Chinese products for my 4 Leica M cameras because of those reasons.
