Near East: From the Birth of Agriculture to the Rise of the Cities

Ойын-сауық

The story of the early farmers in the Near East is a fascinating period of history, but it is often overshadowed by other historical periods for which we have much more detailed information. In this video, we will explore how early farming communities advanced their agriculture and fostered various cultures over thousands of years, ultimately paving the way for the emergence of the first urban cities and the development of civilization as we know it.

This view of things doesn't take into account the different tasks that women and men were most probably expected to accomplish in pre-historic times. Hunters would bring great, incredibly valuable prizes to the groups diet - from time to time. That lasted maybe 2 or 3 days (meat rottens after 2 or 3 days) no matter how big the catch was. Even when it was a VERY difficult, rare catch, with the weapons they had at the time. While I bet women provided MOST of the group's sustainance with their... gathering. As they were handicapped by smaller strength and care of very vulnerable children, wounded, old. Oh, ok. At least care of the babies, can we agree on THAT? It was the women (mostly) gathering activity that slowly transformed into agriculture, because planting was a far less time and energy consuming, and probably less dangerous. An alternative model of the past. One that IS, just BTW, supported by solid scientic, anthropogical clues. Not my imagination or wishful thinking - I'm not a hardline feminist. But I really believe we owe agriculture and herding animals to women. As it makes sense that when men got that, they slowly changed their roles from hunters to guardians of propriety (including the women best capable of providing food - far less risk for THEM too!). It just makes sense.

Or why, then, are the first religious images, for so many centuries, of female goddesses?
