Extremely close call with a blind truck driver.
Context: This was over 4 hours into a 7 hour trip. While I was letting OpenPilot keep the car in lane I was able to keep my eyes on my surroundings. This happened very quickly and I might not have reacted quickly enough if I was tired or distracted in some other way even with a hand on the wheel. Driver monitoring helped keep me attentive and facing forward. Without OpenPilot this may have been a bad situation.

Out standing save bro, I’m glad u didn’t crash and are safe. Hope all is good
That truck, besides trying to drive you off the road, is going way too fast for being so heavily loaded in the rain. I wish highway patrol would go after these kinds of dangerous drivers instead of camping out where speed limits change to make easy money for the court system.

"I wish highway patrol would go after these kinds of dangerous drivers instead of camping out where speed limits change to make easy money for the court system." It won't happen until 1-click emergency reporting on openpilot is a thing. Time from incident is definitely a factor. Too long and people won't care and forget. 1 click and it gets tweeted to the local police department, 911 gets texted a video link with GPS, etc. Automate all the things!

uhhh... you def should have called the cops and called that truckers company to report this
Amazing video man! Glad you're all right too, nice reaction time!
The truck driver disliked this video
The trucker was testing openpilot - in reverse.
Glad your okay
KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING!!!
Wow! Good save on your behalf.
Please upload more, i am addicted
That happened to me before with a truck coming up the onramp for the freeway and I almost got crushed between him and the guardrails.
guys don't forget its single-camera operation, it just the following lane, the system has no idea what the truck doing on the side, eventually, cameras will be all the way around engaged with software, in that case, we can give a fair rate on this system, that is one of the reasons why the driver has to make sure surroundings!
Dude you need to use rain x on your windshield
my main worry about sever weather and open pilot is can it be truly safe so these are great videos i really like the system just does not work with my Audi a4 yet and really love having a convertable
Though to me it shows how important it is for a autonomous car to have sensors and cameras all around the vehicle, you could have die if you didn't pay attention to your surroundings :(

My view is that, even with the sensors, you still should be paying attention to your surroundings, if only to avoid being ticketed for "distracted driving".

That's a liability in my 2017 Prius too--the lack of sensors for the left and right sides of the car is a problem. With Toyota Safety Sense alone I've had near misses when inattentive drivers leave their lane and enter mine and nearly side-swipe me. Safety Sense didn't even detect this and I've had to hit the brakes by myself. Even OpenPilot can't solve this if Toyota won't put sensors all around the vehicle!
no lane change signal, no attention paid by driver = 911 call to police for dangerous driving
I feel like that was the truck fault
Awesome camera view, where did you have it mounted?
Wow! Now you have scared Andy!
Damn! That was close! Doesn't the RAV4 has blind spot detector/indicator? I didn't see any orange light on the side mirror. 😱

It’s a Corolla and doesn’t have BSM.
it did warn you on left bottom corner of the phone? It seems like you dont have blindspot warning sensor on the back mirror but Openpilot still warned you.
the problem is that it cannot see behind and side.
Holy! That was close…
what a save
You gotta understand those truckers are on meth and other stuff most of the time. If you see a trucker overtaking you... You are going WAY too slow if you value your safety.

Did the truck cross lane lines? It happens to me with trucks and motorcycles that’s lane split on my open pilot.

You shouldn't rely on the vision system in heavy rain. it can't see clearly.
should have flashed high beams - the truckers CANNOT hear that horn in the cab

Hands on the lap when it is pouring raining?!? Risky to trust cameras (and even radar) like that. Takes a relatively long time to move your hands (vs hands lightly on the wheel).

With openpilot it keeps you in the centre lane. If you were driving yourself in that weather then who knows you might have been doing the same as the truck did. So in a sense openpilot may have saved you.
The lorry Driver is at fault Clearly!
Terrible title. You make it sound like the comma was at fault while driving without holding the steering wheel on a wet highway. Glad you are okay.
@LoganLeGrand
7 ай бұрын
The title is a description of what happened. Nothing in it suggest comma or OpenPilot is at fault for anything. It’s level 2 driver assist, the driver is always responsible for controlling the vehicle and taking avoiding action.
Many factors can impact the performance of openpilot ACC, causing it to be unable to function as intended. These include, but are not limited to: Poor visibility (heavy rain, snow, fog, etc.) or weather conditions are interfering with sensor operation.
@MylesV

From the way I interpret the description OpenPilot didn’t fail here, the truck did.
Horrible title but your also going 55 in a 70 So it’s obvious you were holding up traffic. If your scared of the conditions you shouldn’t be driving in them.
@martinbrah906
12 күн бұрын
You must be the truck driver. If the weather was fine, sure. But it was raining heavily, and 70mph might not be so safe, considering the risk of standing water and aquaplaning. It doesn't seem like there was much traffic going in his direction, so he wasn't holding up anything. And he was in the first "slow" lane.

You are relying to heavily on the driver assist. Pay attention to your surroundings.
@LoganLeGrand

I was paying attention, that’s how I avoided an accident. The driver assist allowed me to stay alert to my surroundings. It was the other driver not paying attention.
You should've crashed to learn how to stop holding traffic, you making a semi that weighs 16 times more than what you go around you because you don't feel like driving on a highway should be a crime. Specially on that weather. Incredible selfish of you
@LoganLeGrand
3 ай бұрын
You comment on the conditions but blame me for going a safe speed for the conditions? The semi was going too fast clearly because he didn’t even see my vehicle. I was in the slow lane and not holding traffic. The passing lane is clear but you need to pass safely. Semi driver shouldn’t be on the road if he can’t see the cars around him.

@@LoganLeGrand My man you are doing 55 mph on a 70mph, you are 15mph below the speed limit !!!with no hands on the steering wheel!! because you are playing with your new toy. He obviously saw you to move an 40 ton machine over to not crush you because you can't drive in the rain. what cause most accidents on the road are vehicle forced to change lane because people like you decide the own the lane and everyone else following the speed limit needs to go around you. You are putting your self at risk and everyone who needs to slow down or go around to avoid hitting you because you don't know or care to learn how to drive and wants a machine to do it for you. The same way its a crime to go over 15 mpg the speed limit and cops write tickets for I don't see cops writing tickets for people like you going 15 below, usually people like you that dies or cause major accidents. Learn how to drive first so at least you can set the equipment right to drive it for you, stop being too lazy to even want to step on the brake to be on toy. That's the real reason people go that much below the speed limit , if an 40ton semi truck can go at 70 your corola can do it too. 70 it's not fast and you are not being safe by doing 55 and turning your hazard light on
Their tire smacked your mirror. Technically they hit you.
