NEA Jazz Masters: Richard Davis (2014)

One of the premier jazz bassists in history, Richard Davis is widely recorded, not only in jazz settings but also in the pop, rock and classical genres as well. In addition to his prowess on bass, Davis is a noted educator, having been a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1977. More information: www.arts.gov/honors/jazz/richard-davis

I studied with Richard almost forty years ago, and some of the things he said to me then resonate still. Now, I get to pass those approaches along to my students. I attended the ceremony last evening, and it was a thrill to see Richard be recognized not only for the talent he possesses, but for the person he is. Among the warmest, most generous-of-spirit people I've ever met. Congratulations, Richard.

He was my teacher in the early 70's in N.Y... He said one of the greatest moments in his life when recording with Stravinsky with NY Philharmonic Stravinsky shook his hand and thanked him for being there..... He said he didn't wash his hand for a week... Thank you and RIP Richard Davis.

Richard Davis played mainly jazz, but he was a session player on some rock albums. See Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks" (1968) and Bruce Springsteen's "Meeting Across the River" from "Born to Run" (1975). Well done, sir. RIP.

Hi Ran, I studied with you briefly at NEC at your home in Brookline. I also studied privately with Richard before NEC and thanks to both of you there are things that are making more sense to me now with the help of both of you. Thank you.

I really would love to know what that performance was at the end, with the vocalist imitating trumpet sounds, and where I can watch it! I searched for "richard davis live at sweet basil wisconsin public television" but didn't find it.
