ND Miata Skyactiv engine teardown

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Customer had us replace their motor in their 2016 ND Miata, I figured I'd take the opportunity to do a teardown and see how these engines are built. I took the opportunity to do some comparisons to the predecessor - the Ford Duratec - as I'm very familiar with those.

After trying to install performance camshafts myself with no prior experience this video saved my life, redid the timing 3 different times while also checking and dealing with a handfull of other issues (100k mile engine) turns out the little (pump piece) in the rear main housing fell out and the car will NOT start at all without it. I was only able to find out where it went becuase of this video! Just watching through looking for something that looked similar! Now the car runs and drives on the new base map tune!

Love the work. And in HD, i was able to zoom in and see in full detail. I haven't heard of these engines fail on their own, so i was interested to see what went on.

Well considering he got to 70k miles and lots of track day events I would say he did pretty alright. No oil cooler, stock 0w20, and East Texas heat.

Great Video! I like that you don't fast-forward anything. I have a 2017 ND Miata with 80k miles. No track or street abuse. Will it have build-up like the one you did here? Is there anything you'd recommend doing besides regular oil changes? I'm not super knowledgeable on engines. The only thing I did to it is clean out the throttle body and do oil/filter changes. I take it easy on her but is it true that it's good for the engine to get the RPMs to redline every now and then in good conditions? Or is that just a myth?

I just turbo charged my 2016 with the B.B.R 200 cam kit with heavier valve springs, I've heard they can handle up to 7-8 lb boost and 240 lb of torque stock.

After you say you've done cams and valve springs you can't use the word "stock."

Very cool to see this. Is this 2.0L SkyActiv-G the same, essentially as the one found in the third generation Mazda 3? (I know the one for the Miata is higher power )

According to the Skyactiv Wikipedia they are all G motors, so same family.

@@ArmandHindrichs interesting! Upon further reading, the 2.0 and 2.5, despite being part of the same family, do not share bore, stroke, and other dimensions such as exhaust manifold size and bolt spacing. (I figured this out, as a N/A 2.5 skyactiv engine has an aftermarket turbo header available, 2.0 engines like mine in my 2014 Mazda 3 do not.)

So this is an ND1 engine. The ND2 has a few differences, mainly pistons. Did I miss when you said how many miles were on it?

I have very limited mechanical experience, so this may be a dumb question. If an engine has direct injection, why are there intake ports as well?

Direct injection is for fuel, intake ports are for air.

Hi, can you provide the details on this engine? I think Miata ND comes with 1.5l and 2.0l engines, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_MX-5_(ND) So, I assume you have disassembled the 1.5l Skyactive-G, correct? I am interested in the balancer shaft in the Skyactive-G 2.0l engine. I have Mazda6 with this engine, and I am wondering if it has a balancer shaft. From the information in the internet, it seems Skyactive-G 2.0l in Mazda6 does not have a balancer shaft. On the other hand, some people claim, that Skyactive-G 2.0 in Miata does have a balancer shaft. I would appreciate any information. I have Mazda6 2.0l Skyactive-G and I suffer from engine vibrations. Dealers say that all is good, and I would like to understand what is going before selling the car or requesting repairs.

In the USA the ND is only offered with a 2.0L. As stated in the video this is my first opportunity disassembling any Skyactiv motors so I have no prior experience with any other Skyactiv motors whatsoever. As far as balance shafts go I can tell you that many of the FWD platform versions of cars come with balance shafts as opposed to their RWD counterparts.

@@ArmandHindrichs Thank you for the information! Maybe in the RWD cars the engine is more decoupled from the drivers wheel and the floor? But I think e.g. BMW uses balancer shaft in all engines larger than 2.0l, and I think even Ford uses balancer shaft in the 2.0l Ecoboost. According to my knowledge so far, balancer shafts are needed to cancel certain types of vibrations due to connecting rods. This suggests that the vibration is worse in longer stroke engines. I wonder why Mazda does not install balancer shaft in this long-stroke inline-4 engine. Maybe Mazda customers do not complain about the vibrations. But then why other brands bother to install these expensive balancer shafts even in 2.0l petrol engines?

Are you referring to the 2.0L Duratec as a longer stroke motor? The 2.3L and 2.5L Duratec motors do have balance shafts. You'll see me remove the assembly in this video.@@euregiojam
