thank you!!! I'm in my second sequence but struggle with answering NCLEX style questions on my exams! For the most part, I feel like I know my information but I'm always "adding to the question" and overcomplicating it, which also makes me more nervous and then its all down hill from there lol. but thank you, thank you, thank you! wish I watched this earlier!

How will we differentiate whether the keyword "first" given in the question is asking for Maslow's hierarchy or for assessment?

A lot of times with a Maslow's question, you'll see a question saying,"Which patient would you see first?" So the question would ask you to prioritize the patients depending on which conditions are more acute (ABCs) and in need of emergent care. With an assessment question, you might see something like, "What should the nurse do first?" This would be indicating that the question is looking for steps of the nursing process. Remember that this is a general rule of thumb and there are always exceptions, but that's a good base!

@@sonikarki2008 Sometimes, you'll see priority questions asking you what is the “best,” “most important,” “first,” or “initial response” by the nurse. This indicates that it is a priority question. So, while all the answers may be correct, it's asking you to choose with the priority would be. This is where you would refer to Maslows (ABCs), and ADPIE.

watching this video 10 times before school even begins tomorrow lol

I immediately started sharing just mid way. Explained so very good. However, the very last question. I want more explanation…so it was either 3 or 4. 3 was my choice because of airway. 4 was my choice because of airway/circulation. At least with 3 their still breathing but that kink in the NG tube, it can definitely lead to something more dangerous. Could you help me as to why 3 was more correct than 4? I may have said it already but I need more confidence in this! Thanks again!

Question on the second question,.... I would not have selected the last option simply because I am thinking that increase hydration has to do with IV fluid admin. I do not have the authority to increase the fluids without a provider order. Sure, I can encourage oral fluid intake, but without an order, how do I know how much to increase the flow to? Can you help clarify this for me? Thx!!!! :)

We hope you find this explanation helpful. With this scenario, we are focusing on the "priority nursing action." First, make sure you don't assume anything when reading the questions or answers. The NCLEX will always explicitly state what the scenario is, and leave little to the imagination. Since a placed IV or IV infusion is not part of the question's stem, then this is not available to us as an answer. Second, the answer states "Increase hydration and encourage oral fluids." If it stated "Increase hydration via infusion," then this may be something to consult a physician for an order. It is really easy to quickly read a question and think one thing. Just take your time while reading questions and answers, and be completely immersed in all the scenario has to offer. This will often result in you seeing the correct answer without straining.
