NCC Q32: What do justification and sanctification mean?

A32: Justification means our declared righteousness before God, made possible by Christ's death and resurrection for us. Sanctification means our gradual, growing righteousness, made possible by the Spirit's work in us.

I do agree Sanctification is a very long daily process for the born again believer, it has been a long one for me since I was converted back in December 2018. I have never been the same though I had a lot of struggles since then, and since after I humbled myself in November 2019 after discovering I had fallen into a deadly trap of bitterness from Satan, sin is now starting to get weakened and become less dominant to me now. Before I was born again on December 13 2018 I was in a very broken and troubled state where I learned I needed to be convicted of my sin and come guilty before God so that I may receive pardon through Christ, after I agreed to be convicted I came under such a huge load of guilt and was made to feel the burden of my sins, of which there had been many transgressions I had committed in my old lost life. What sent me down the way to be born again was an awful tragedy I had to go through with losing my mom and dad to dying who were originally my grandparents at first but then a divorce happened in the family I was born into and I went to live with them when I was just a 2 year old baby I spent a long 25 years of my life with them until September 20 and September 21 2017. My mom was the first to die, and my dad went away dying on the next day and it shattered my heart and I was never the same again, I came to think God had used that tragedy to break my heart over all the sins I had done against Him for as long I could remember. I have honestly been very amazed by the radical changes He has done in my life, since He granted me repentance unto life I had done a lot of repenting since then and have continued to have faith in Him and in His Son Jesus Christ the only Jesus I want is the real One who is able to take sins forgive them and blot them out by His shed blood of which He bled and died on that cross on Calvary to free me from my old life of sin and death and reconcile me unto His Father God Almighty.

I've been in a very intense spiritual battle the past few months - and today the Lord led me to this message and that one verse Hebrews 10:14 literally tore down a major stronghold!! The actual saving faith is mentioned in Galatians 2:20. "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." Without THAT faith, life of Christ will not dwell in us. Most people don't know that point. Only through that faith, Christ will save us. Because Christ wants only us, not our old self or our flesh, which is always in enmity towards God.

"But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they" (Acts 15:11). Did Peter say they had been saved? NO! He said we "shall be saved"... in the future. Paul said we *hope* for, and hope *to obtain* salvation in 1 Thess 5:8,9: "But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ." Did Paul tell them they were already saved! No! Here's another example, in Romans 5:9: "Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him." Did Paul tell the Romans they were saved? No: he told them they were justified, and that they "shall be" saved: in the future. Justification and salvation are two different things, occurring at different times! Those who have been justified and have entered sanctification have the HOPE of salvation!

The comment below says "interesting-and sad- that he never mentions repentance" The message of repentant or go to hell does not save ppl, the Gospel does. In acts chpter 19 we hear Paul asking.."did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They said..we have not heard of the Holy Spirit, Paul said..what baptism did you receive? they said..the baptism of John, Paul explained : “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the One coming after him, that is, in Jesus. On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Repentance is the fruit of salvation, not the root, man still has a hard time receiving a free gift, He still is wanting to bring vegetables as his sacrifice. This is the first time i have heard Mr Piper but this message is right on point, it's not a new message, it's the original.

"Becoming what we ARE" No.Wrong. You are confounding the two. As a child I spread out my arms and ran along with a plane four miles above. Yes the same direction. But a very different flight. God COUNTS me with "the righteousness of the One" ( Rom. 5:18) "unto justification of life". But I will NEVER BECOME that Righteousness. The two will be forever distinct. That graciously imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ will be forever the only source of that "righteousness" in which we can hope to be accepted. (Rom. 5:21) "even so might grace reign through righteousness (HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS)

(HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS) unto eternal life." Our sanctification righteousness will never never merge with that graciously imputed righteousness of our justification. In eternity, though having long not sinned, yet it will still be only ever ever it will be still only "the righteousness of the One" (Rom. 5:18) for which we will be justified and for which we will continue in the gift of eternal life. Our sanctification righteousness--even when we then will have so long walked perfectly-- yet our sanctification righteousness will never contribute in the least to our justification. The two will never be joined or confused. We will never become our justification righteousness. This is kindergarten basic.

Wow! Piper says the evidence of sanctification is that we hate our sin and strive to overcome it daily (second 305). Of course he does not get anything like that from the Holy Scripture. Nor does he get the idea of "being sanctified" from scripture in the context he uses it from verse (He. 10:14). The verse actually says , "them that are sanctified." But, back to evidence, the scripture actually teaches that the evidence of perfection or sanctification is a mind that has no conscience of sin (He. 10:2). Piper evidence, sin in the mind. Scripture evidence, no conscience of sin. Paul said he exercised himself always to have conscience void of offense towards God and man (Acts 24:16). This is the picture of sanctification taught in the Holy Scriptures. In (Thes. 2:10) he said know how holy and justly, unblameably we behaved ourselves among you. And this behavior is exactly what scripture says is his will for all of us (Thes. 4:3). This is the New Covenant prophesied of old, which produced holiness in the heart. (Ez. 36:27) "I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments and do them." In verse 37 it says we are to pray for it. Do you think John Piper is praying for this blessing? I doubt it. People are very unlikely to pray for what that do not want, or what they do not believe they are entitled to. Jesus said be it unto you according to your faith. Those who have no faith in Jesus and His promises will in no wise inherit them, in this life or the next. Unlike John Pipers false gospel that makes void God's moral law, Jesus Gospel establishes God's moral law in the heart. In (Is. 7:9) it says "If you will not believe, surely ye shall not be established." Where there is a consciousnesses of sin is evidence that that person is living under the law. (He. 7:19) says the law makes nothing perfect, but the bring in of a better hope does. (Rom. 6:14) says that sin shall not have dominion over you for you are not under the law. This false teacher says "God's recon you righteous." But scripture says in (Rom. 6:11) we are to reckon ourselves dead indeed unto sin. In other words we are to believe God in Jesus for the promised blessing until we have the evidence of a clear conscience of it. And once you have a clear conscience you know it, you have the witness in yourself. John Piper only has a witness in himself of sin, and he considers this a great blessing. One last thing Jesus came to save people from sin, that is the great blessing.

The Catholic doctrines on salvation make so much more sense than this. In trying to simplify “the gospel” you have to say things that are illogical like we spend a lifetime becoming what we already are. How does authoritatively stating an illogical doctrine help anyone. Jesus established a New Covenant with us on the Cross by sacrificing His Body and Blood. His salvation by His Grace through our trusting of Him is what we do to sign our part of His Covenant. We Trust Him (which is a work). The next day we wake up and do good works so that we can Trust Him all the more. And he gave us the Sacrament of Holy Communion so that we could be reunite with Him in a personal way every day if we are able. Baptism is the sign of that free grace he gives us without any “work” on our part. That’s why it makes sense to Baptize infants. If you have to wait until you are older to make a profession of faith, isn’t that a work? All of the Sacraments, the Mass, the Rosary are all ways the Church had instituted to help us Trust our Lord more each day. What a blessing! The Protestant Church is so busy trying not to do works, they have thrown out the baby with the bath water. Christians should look different than the world! We should focus on deep worship of our Lord. We are not a social club, but a religion which tries to help people humbly submit our wills to His will. The Catholic Church us a beautiful thing.

Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; I guess God got this wrong. According to John Piper it should say sanctification not salvation. Romans 2:13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. Another mistake, should say sanctified. You see we are not justified once and forever. We are cleansed all our lives. Christ was raised for our justification, it does not say sanctification. Those that are being sanctified and are sanctified all their lives are the only ones who are perfect by the blood. Those who sin and do not walk in the righteousness of the law, obedience of faith, of love, will never enter into the kingdom and will not be perfect. James 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? John Piper and the Calvinists claim Christ performed the very obedience of faith for us, the very good works that God created us for is not required of us?

Interesting - and sad - that he never mentions repentance. Jesus said in Luke 13:3,5 "except you repent, you shall all likewise perish." Point is this: we are not justified to God unless we have chosen to change our mind about remaining in sin. It is sin that earned us all the death penalty. Jesus died to make a ransom payment available - a payment of our death penalty - *_if_* we'll choose to turn from sin... turn from sin that earned us the death penalty in the first place. Jesus did not die to make it okay for us to continue in sin! Would God grant remission (forgiveness) of sin to someone who chooses to remain in sin? Would you pay your kid's speeding tickets if he/she chose to continue speeding? Of course not. Even Satan believes Jesus died for us, but Satan will not repent. So is Satan a believer? Paul stated that God "now commands all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:30). If we'll believe and obey - repent - we will be justified or made right with God. But we are still the same sinners by nature, and that needs to be fixed. How? We are promised the holy spirit: God "gives his spirit to them that obey him" (Acts 5:32). The purpose, the function of him dwelling in us is to guide us into righteousness, learning not to sin. That's sanctification. Jesus finished making the ransom payment on the cross, but His work is not done. Even now He guides, corrects, and leads those He loves into continued repentance and overcoming. Note what He says to the churches: "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent" (Revelation 3:19). That's sanctification in action. Sanctification "yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby" (Hebrews 12:11). What's the purpose of sanctification? God wants family: sons and daughters He can live with forever. He is *_creating_* them now through Jesus, working with any who will choose to repent and seek His righteousness. He is the Potter, we are the clay; He can not work with us if we are unrepentant, inflexible, unmoldable. This is why Paul wrote that we should each "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" (Phil 2:12). This is why Peter wrote "Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall" (2 Peter 1:10). This is the "narrow way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it" (Matthew 7:14).

Wesley ,i believe, was the first who split sanctification and justification. Error. Sanctification means ''set apart'' . So when you are justified you are set apart too ,ONCE FOR ALL by the blood of Christ hebrew 10,10. So then the abondant life of Christ, who's inside us , is manifested through you gradually . It isn't progressive sanctification. You are not more sanctified than others if you live more years than others. The criminal on the cross was a saint without ''doing '.And our rigteousness is based on what He has done on the cross 2 cor 5;21it is not a gradual progress in righteousness Having begun by the Spirit , are you now perfected by the flesh ? Nothing changed since galatians epistle as i see

We never become that graciously imputed righteousness. It will always be a gracious imputation. It is our identification with Christ. By sanctification we will never be considered more holy or more acceptable. And we will NEVER grow into our justification. It will never FIT us. Our progressive sanctification is on a different plane, in the same direction, but we will never by sanctification BECOME what we are by grace accounted. "Becoming what we are"--no sounds good but you need more study.
