NBC Mystery Movie (cover)
This is my cover of Henry Mancini's theme from the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie (also used for the NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie).
How old were you when this show aired? When you heard this theme, did that signal "bedtime," or did you get to watch the movies?
In the history of television, there are a handful of themes that stand out as being memorable... and perhaps even catchy... for one reason or another. Perhaps it's the show itself, or maybe it's the tune.
This is one of them.
I personally count this piece as being quite memorable because it was a great tune. The movies, however... I can't recall the plot of a single one.
This was the launching point for shows like Quincy, M.E. and Columbo. The rendition is an expanded version of the theme and the video portion includes many of the titles that aired under the Mystery Movie umbrella.
The theme as aired went through at least a couple of different arrangements. I tried to choose instrumentation that stayed true to the original theme while being a little less "piercing." I hope you enjoy it at least as much as I enjoyed (re)creating it!

I remember watching this growing up. Brings back memories.
This is a great take-off on a still-partially-appreciated artifact of the Golden Age of Television. A lot of folks today either forgot, or are too young to remember, that Columbo, McLoud, McMillan & Wife, Quincy, etc. were not separate television series from 1971-77. Clever of you to mix so many into one presentation like this and still make your music flow around them as if it was all supposed to be that way. And thanks for including the old NBC logo at the end like we're actually about to watch another NBC Mystery Movie. Interesting music. Sounded like we were back in the Disco era for a moment.
Could I love this any more than I do? I don't think so! It sounds gorgeous, includes all the unique characters from over the years (Tenafly!) and doesn't have the annoying voiceover at the end! Thank you for creating, and for sharing! 100/10
As a 70s kid I always wondered if the guy with the flashlight found what he was looking for.
Excellent! You captured it perfectly.
Well done!!
So glad you included all the intros. We've been watching Hec Ramsey every Sunday and I've just been playing a random version of the Mystery theme before each episode. From now on we'll use this one.
Sounds from my youth, meant my pareints were in the family room watching TV on the color set, while I was upstairs watching on the portable b/w.
😂❤bought back memories with tears
some of the standard and favorite I remember, but the other one's I remember but did not see them that often. The Snoop Sisters, Faraday and Company, and Tenafly. Wish some of the nostalgia channel or streaming would show those classic show.
This was absolutley wonderful!! It reminded me of when my sisters and I would gather in our grandparents bedroom to watch these programs. Thank you for the wonderful walk down memory lane.
Well-done, really! I have fond memories of this music, and this series. Henry Mancini did it again! Part of the good old days, when you had a variety of prime-time dramas involving actual filmmakers and actors; rather than “reality” competitions, match-making, talent contests, and game show remakes. (CBS and ABC followed suit with their own revolving mystery shows.)
well, hell Neil, that was actually pretty good (still listening) i hope you spliced in at the end the classic voice over "Tonight starring Peter Falk, as Columbo"
henery will be proud of you
Glad some of these programs air on Saturday mornings through afternoons on COZI TV.
Tonight! Starring Peter Falk As Columbo!
wonderful
Not bad! I like it 😊
This version seems to have all the characters 😃😃😃😃
Neil, what keyboards are you using here? It sounds great! Thanks
