NBA Slam Dunk Contest 1976

Спорт

GAME 9: at McNichols Arena, Denver, Colorado, January 27, 1976
MVP: David Thompson, Denver Nuggets
Coaches:
All-Stars: Kevin Loughery, New York Nets
Denver: Larry Brown, Denver Nuggets
In the 1976 ABA All Star Game, the league abandoned the usual East vs. West format it used from the 1967-68 season onward and instead had the league's first place team at the All Star break face off against a team of ABA All Stars. At the All Star break the Denver Nuggets were in first place, which was convenient as the Nuggets had also been selected to host the game in McNichols Arena. (The Nuggets went on to finish the regular season in first place at 60-24 (.714), but after beating the Kentucky Colonels 4 games to 3 in the ABA Semifinals the Nuggets lost in the 1976 ABA Finals to the New York Nets, 4 games to 2.)
Pre-game entertainment was provided by Glen Campbell and Charlie Rich.
Halftime of the All Star Game saw the first-ever Slam Dunk Contest, which was won by Julius Erving of the New York Nets (who took off from the free throw line for his dunk) over David Thompson of the Denver Nuggets, Artis Gilmore of the Kentucky Colonels, George Gervin of the San Antonio Spurs and Larry Kenon of the Spurs.[3]. The NBA later adopted the Slam Dunk Contest as part of its All Star Game starting in 1984 (also hosted by the Denver Nuggets). Denver's 52 fourth quarter points was a record for an ABA All Star Game and capped a ferocious comeback win. This was the final ABA All Star Game, due to the ABA-NBA merger in June 1976. This Slam Dunk Contest was not the very first; it was the first "Official" Slam Dunk Contest. The first actual one took place in front of just over 10,000 at half time at the previous year's 1975 ABA All Star Game in San Antonio - and it was a spontaneous unofficial event that the players simply did on their own. While my memory's a little hazy about all the contestants and I have found no video of the game, let alone its half time events, they were pretty much the same high flyers as in this 1976 video from Denver. What isn't hazy is my memory of Dr.J's winning dunk. Julius started running all the way from the opposite corner with a ball in each hand. I'm not sure exactly where he took off from, but it was somewhere at or beyond the free throw line. While flying rapidly through the air, he turned a slow 180 so that he reached the basket with his back to it. From there he tomahawked each ball over his opposite shoulder, before gracefully landing with knees bent and arms outstretched to the sides, taking in the roar of the stunned & delirious crowd. It was the most incredible combination of speed, power, athleticism, finesse, and ballet-like body control I have ever seen in any athletic event. After 60 years as a basketball junkie, I still watch NBA All Star Dunk Contests. I've seen some great dunks over the years. But none compare with that one, from 25 year old Dr J at his physical peak.
