This is the reason why even though i consider today's players "better" as far as skill goes, they learned that from the past greats. Kyrie may have better handles than Pistol Pete but none of these handlers would exist if Pete and other handlers didn't push the bar to what today's players watched, practiced, and bettered.

For me one of coldest NBA moves of all time near the top if not # 1 .

Dr. J is probably the most graceful player of all time. Could there be a more awkward position to shoot from than at 1:52? Yet he somehow makes even that look elegant. Such a pleasure to watch.

When, he, Jones, Cheeks and Moses Malone were on that 83 team, that was unreal. All four were at least, above average defenders. That team had players who were finishers; not ones that threw the ball around the horn looking for a three point shot. Some people also do not notice that Erving made his plays on that 1.5 step rule rather than traveling to the basket.

Great video of one of the greats from the greatest era in NBA history--the '80s. Watching him go against Bird in the early '80s was intense. They battled in '81 in epic playoff matchup. They competed fiercely and the battles for rebounds in that '81 Celtic 1-3 comeback series were legendary. That was one of the best series of all time. I used to say unequivocally that Jordan was the best finisher at the rim. Dr. J is definitely in the discussion. He couldn't hang in the air quite like Jordan, but his control, creativity, and spontaneity are right there with Mike. Dr. J is one of the small few in the east that was able to beat a healthy Larry Bird in a playoff series, albeit Bird's rookie year. I remember when the computer basketball game "One-on-One" featuring Dr.J and Larry Bird came out and my cousin had it on the Apple II-e--cool times.. What a treat it was for the NBA fan to have the rivalries of Magic and Bird in the west and Dr. J and Bird in the east--today's fans that look back to those matchups on youtube are great fans and I am glad they get to see those old battles. The physicality, the fights, the hurt feelings and pride, the comebacks, the legends..

He is like a Ballet Dancer with a Basketball. His moves are so fluid and graceful. Its nice to watch.

Doc was the smoothest ball player that every played the game!

That reverse lay vs lakers in the finals, and that rock a bye baby dunk was his iconic moments of all time.

70s n 80s best basketball era

I was fortunate enough to watch Dr J play firsthand live both with the Sixers and the Nets. He was a breathtaking athlete. His dunks the greatest ever. Has to be included as one of the top 10 players of all time. He could take over games and shined on the biggest stage.

My favorite player I never got to see play. That behind-the-backboard layup against LA in '83.... magic.

There will never be another Julius "Dr. J. Erving". He was an INCREDIBLE basketball player and one of the greatest to ever play the game.

That rock the cradle dunk on Micheal Cooper was nasty!!

It's a thing of beauty, and the music goes with everything perfectly. Faded footage of a bygone era, yes, but timeless.

Met Doc a few times outside the Spectrum in Philly when we waited for the players in the parking lot (I was a teen). He was always pleasant and easy going...great guy....Same for Bobby Jones and Darryl Dawkins....all fun to talk with after a game....got a laugh out of Maurice Cheeks when we asked him for ride home :-)

Julius Erving had the complete package. In the '70s he had fierce power. In the '80s he had ridiculous moves both on the floor and in the air. He could score at will, rebound with the best of them, play good defense, and intimidate anyone on the court, up to and including first ballot hall-of-famers. Dr. J was an American original.

There would be no Jordan without 'The Doctor'. The original and still the best overall high wire act master of all time(Doc). Can you imagine if J' came in the Internet era like Jordan, his global popularity would've been greater than virtually all of them. The man was an inventor.

It's up there but i disagree, most lists have Clyde "the glide" Drexler Blazers vs Lakers with the best and most beautiful slam of all time. The cameraman captured it perfectly. It was a thing of beauty for the ages.

Dr. J really saved the NBA and the popularity today is largely due to his presence.

When I was young like 8 -10 years old my favorite player was Dr J. His game was the precursor to MJ. He rocked the rim and yet spoke like a professor which got him his nickname. The man was silky smooth, cool, badass and smart. I was pleased to see my son uses him in 3 on 3 playground mode in NBA2k. It got me wanting to watch his highlights and it was so enjoyable cause most I'd never even seen before. He started when I was just born but thought I'd share it cause it's interesting. The ones that are new for me are from a forgotten era of basketball but man was he slick. Thank you for posting that!

In my 45 years of NBA/ABA observance, I believe a few Vince Carter dunks may have superseded the athleticism of those of Julius, but Erving's finesse and dunk versus underhand layup decision-making skill put him at the pinnacle of athletic entertainers of all time!

The thing about Dr. J is he brought to pro basketball a greatly-needed infusion of STYLE, back in the 1970s, before Bird/Magic, Jordan, Kobe, LeBron et al. His leaping ability seemed UNREAL based on what footage I’ve seen, and to reiterate what many here have already said, he was a class act. For such an eloquent man, he seemed to let his actions on the court do the talking.

I always loved the Lakers...But Dr. J was just such a masterful artist on the court !

My Favorite Player

Dr. J was so graceful and smooth on his plays. He must have one heck of a wingspan and large hands to do what he did. Truly poetry in motion.

There is just something special about Dr. J. that no other player in NBA history can boast. He was not just an iconic player, but he rose to the ranks of folklore.

Growing up in the 70-80’s, Dr. J was my favorite player.

Probably the most graceful big man the game has ever seen, he fucking floated out there at times

@@mauricegrant9229 Don't think so. Doc floated in the air longer with the finger roll than Gervin.It looked more smoother than Gervin. Gervin just did more finger rolls because he didn't have the hops that DJ had

J doesn't get talked about enough these days - he was the original Magic. And I have to say that there's a lot fewer travels in this highlight reel than in most. Julius took such long strides that he didn't need to take the third step like most NBA players do now.

The Doctor changing the hand the ball fires from while shooting it, MID-AIR is absolutely amazing; effectively tricking his guard and then executing a beautiful shot. Unspeakable.

I remember a Sports Illustrated cover with MJ on the cover, probably his rookie season, with the caption "The Next Dr. J?" Not to take anything away from MJ, but I've seen Dr. J. . . and you sir are no Dr. J : ) One of a kind. "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh" anyone?

Frank Garcia ...Doc was equipped with vast power and grace. Extremely balletic!!!

First, I respect most of the top players of all time. That being said, I think Doc was the GOAT. Yes, he didn't score as much as others, he didn't win as many championships, but a lot of what the modern game is started with Mr. Erving. Guys like Doc and Michael also show class and grace on and off the court. Again, he's from a long gone era, but the truth is many of today's players would NOT be able to keep up with him in his era, while he could play in today's NBA and still be a top star. Much love and respect to this man.
