NB Mazda Miata - Cheap Sports Car - Too Handly? - Test Drive | Everyday Driver

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

An old Miata certainly matches their Cheap Sports Car parameters, and the guys have driven them before. This Special Edition NB-generation is slightly modified with Konis, Falken tires, and a sway bar. Although it’s set up primarily for autocross, the guys rediscover how good (maybe too good) that properly set-up and maintained cheap Miatas can be.

All the issues they talked about is what I love about the car LOL. I’m a new car owner and I love that the Miata is slow for my liking, reliable, and I’m very short so I fit perfectly snuggled in my car. 😌💅🏻 I also drive a base version of the Miata. I don’t plan on changing it honestly. I like mine just the way he is.

I had a 2000 Special Edition just like this one. I reupholstered the seats, installed a header, midpipe, and exhaust, and put it on coilovers with wider tires. It was bliss. I thought I wanted more, so I sold it for a 981 Boxster. Another wonderful car that I deeply admired. It wasn't bliss like the Miata though; it was almost sterile by comparison. I test drove an ND2 and immediately bought one and sold the Boxster. The ND2 is every bit as blissful as my old NB1, but even more. The only mod I've made to the ND2 is to put a RoaderSport axle-back exhaust on it, which adds just the right amount of sizzle. I just might be buried in my ND2...thirty or forty years from now. I know with certainty that I will have a smile on my face.

My Mx5 NB2 is quick. Not fast. But keeping the RPM's high like they should and it's a quick little car. Quickest car I've ever owned. I don't come from a background of porshe and dodge challengers. But this is the fastest car I've owned just because of the way I can drive it.

I'm so SO happy I bought a miata. Mine is quite similar to the one featured here- an 04 LS. It is an objectively slow car, (funny enough, same 0-60 as a base '22 civic) but it's a blast to drive. These things let you drive like an absolute hooligan wherever you go. No hyperbole, you can floor it, shift gears up to about 4th or 5th depending on the situation and you're not getting a ticket. Then, when a turn comes up you tap the brakes JUST A BIT before hucking these guys into the corner. with practice you can learn how to kick the tail out on normal corners. If you don't already know how to heel/toe downshift or really row through the gears, these cars will teach you. If you already know those things, it's exceptionally precise and rewarding to feel that sense of control. *sidebar* as a 6-foot athletically built guy, these things are pretty small to sit in. However, you can spend about an hour performing a "foamectemy", removing foam from the seat. This is free, not very difficult, and allows you to quite literally tailor the seat height and position to your desire. In other words, don't let that be a deciding factor on whether you should buy one.

I have a 1999 NB 1.6, so the even slower one.... but that is enough for the narrow B roads that I drive on here in Germany (Eifel). Mine is silver with no fancy leather or extras other than the touring package and the car is so simple and I love that about it. But I also have the advantage that my daily driver is a 60 hp VW up! that has no power at all and then when you get into the Miata at a nice sunny weekend, it's a night and day difference. I treat the Miata like a classic British sports car.

Slow car fast. Its all about momentum. That requires lots of clutching / shifting. The kind of things enthusiasts should WANT to do ! Mazda gave a super light clutch & short throws so the driving is easy. Keeping momentum is like a video game. Twisting roads are where nirvana is found.

In Aug 2023 I spent $7,491.00 CAD ($5,508.09 USD) on a NB2 2003 Mazda Miata MX-5 Orange ext and Black int, with 73,800 miles on it. I got it three days ago and had to drive it about 800 miles home in two days. That was fun, but mostly highway and no AC or cruse. My wife of 46 years said I have to get an automatic because if anything happens to me she would have to drive it. No arguments we have a four speed automatic and we are fixing it up to go on week long trips. I'm cleaning drains, adjusting clamps, new brakes and rotors, Dunlop tires (nixing the Chinese ones on it) and timing belt water pump (don't know if it was done). Summer 2024 off we go. Also great videos, thanks a bunch for all of the information you have given to me...

Drove a '94 (NA) for 16 years. LOVED it. Would I buy another Miata? No. After living with the downside for that long, I could never go back to the "smallness" of the car. At 6'ft, I barely fit in.. I even had the gas pedal moved with a "Big Guy Mod" which allowed my right leg to extend better. I miss the responsiveness. I don't miss the lack of horsepower and cramped interior. So basically - a "love/hate" relationship. Now, if only Mazda built a larger Miata for us "big guys" and added a V-6 with some torque. They are missing the boat here... Just build it MAZDA!

I give Todd and Paul credit for being so fair to the MX5, because if I were 2 inches taller I doubt I would even consider a Mita. Hopefully, Paul sketches a Miata for taller people someday.

It's simple: get a bucket seat that bolts to the floor (now you have all the headroom you want), throw on a good turbo kit (now you have all the power you want), and upgrade the suspension bits (now you have all the handling you want). You're still out for well under the price of a used Boxster/Corvette/whatever and have zero compromises. It's a 20 year old car, so don't talk to me about silly things like warranties as they don't apply. The Miata is plenty safe (when done right) to turbo to ~200 hp, especially on a 6 speed.

Wonderful video! It could be that, just like the guys' size is not a match for the Miata, those wide-open roads with wide-radius curves are also out of scale for the car. The Miata would be more at home on narrower roads with more frequent and tighter curves where narrowness, shortness, lightness, and nimbleness are at a higher premium. Bring the Miata to Kentucky!

What is also interesting about the older Miata's is that when they were new the stigma attached to them was that they were a hairdresser's car and that men drove anything else but this. However, as this car has aged it seems to have gotten away from that perception and developed into more of the British roadster type fellow with the collared shirt and Irish tweed driving caps or tuned with coffee can exhausts, turbos and engine swaps of every brand and kind; funny how this little car, the best selling sports car of all time has changed from something it never really was into something it always was, fun!

Pretty sure that all Miata generations have something that can lower the seat height some. Whether it be lowering rails or 'foam-ectomy' or what have you. My point being you can usually shave an inch or two off call Mama and if you're going to buy one, you may wish to consider that in your calculations. I've only ever driven the ND Miata. The hard dot on the top of my baseball cap was brushing the roof on the RF version, while I did fit in the soft pop version. I'm 6 ft 6, and equally proportional between legs and chest. As mentioned, they do make lowering rails for the ND and I believe NC. I did have to lower my eyes a bit to see out of the top of the windshield.

My 6'3" or 6'4" tall buddy has owned his NA Miata since the early 1990s, and has run the car frequently competitively in autocross and racetrack events since that time. His seat is all the way back, and has been extensively foamectomied. I don't think he'd want to take the car on a 8 hour drive any more, but the compromises in seating position has never detracted from his love for the car nor his success in competition.

I think slow is relative. It's no beast, but 7.5 to 100kmh (60mph) is relatively brisk. It about equals the 325i of the era and I don't really see people calling that a slow car. Slow to me is over 9 seconds and really slow is over 11 seconds, 6-8 seconds to 100kmh is more than enough to blow your license and more than enough acceleration for the road

Love the review but one thing I’d say. Yes: it’s low on power, but: I couldn’t help but notice by sound and what I see in the rev counter that you guys aren’t revving it Enough. These small sports car motors are made to rev, these, sr20des, 3sges, b18s, 4ages etc. most of these kinda motors aren’t going to be even close to the power below 5-6k rpm. If the engines designed to rev close to 8 then you’re probably supposed to keep it close to there to go fast. You guys are driving it like a bigger motor like online 6s or v8s etc where you kinda shift before 5/6k rpm because all your power is down low and you don’t need to rev it.

@@LoLsaladz Actually, before Covid, a good one with high mileage could be had for x2 the money. Both are great cars.

Todd looks about ten inches too tall for the car to see out of it. Maybe if you removed the seat... The miata is really for women about 5 foot 4. To drive size wise.

Sounds like you got dumped by a 5'4" woman who drove a Miata and are still bitter about it.

Todd can take this one on the chin, and leave this car for us sub-5’9” guys, thankyouverymuch. There are many, many more amply proportioned cars that Todd can enjoy.

What mount are you using for the forward facing camera seen at @6:20 what’s it mounted to?

6:20 is an interior shot while sitting still. Those are done handheld or with a slider. If you mean the shot out across the hood while driving, it’s a GoPro inside the windshield.

@@TestDriveVideos thanks for the response! I mean the one that’s kind of mounted right in front of the trunk/behind the wind breaker looking forward between the two of you and through the windshield
