It always seems strange to me when people drown, especially in pretty calm water. I've grown up swimming in the bayou's and the gulf here in Louisiana where visibility is nil and lot's of trash at the bottom. I was told as child by an old Cajun man to never fight against the water, to always stop, relax and float, and if caught in a riptide, take your time and swim parallel to the shore. Wise words that saved my life many times. When you panic all bets are off. This such a senseless tragedy, my heart goes out to her family.

Naya failed to obey the most basic of boating and swimming rules. 1. NEVER go boating or swimming alone. ALWAYS have another adult (not a child) with you, at least. 2. ALWAYS wear a life vest. 3. NEVER swim or dive when you don't know what is below the surface of the water. 4. Follow the instructions and the cautions that are posted for your protection.

That lake looks too scary to be alone there with just your child. Safety in numbers is still the way. So sorry for this young, beautiful girl.

I feel glad to say I was trained by a Special Forces Veteran in the U.S> Navy when receiving my Open Water Cert. in SCUBA. He yelled at me a lot LOL. Great instructor and one thing he told me during training that I will never forget is that it only takes one tablespoon of water to drown. One tablespoon to go down the wrong pipe and you can lose the only thing to save you and that is your consciousness .

She went out to spend time with her son and didn't make it out . We never know when it's our time. I'm glad they finally found her . So sad.

This shows how unwise it is to go boating without a life vest!

The last memory that little boy has of his mother is her putting him back in the boat to safety and she slips away. No Words for how that will affect him through life. Excellent Vlog as usual Scott.

I’m not trying to be disrespectful, but you can tell by the way she parked her car that she was not too attentive.

Something similar to this happened to my friend’s brother. He swam out into a deep part of a lake to save his daughter and managed to save her but he unfortunately died.

I’m an experienced boater, and I would never go out on that risky-looking lake. Too many variables to stay aware of.

I don't know much about her and I've never seen anything she was in but I'm very sad to hear of what happened to her. It's unfortunate that she didn't have someone with her, going alone on the water with a toddler is a recipe for disaster. I hope others can learn from this very sad situation 😞

Looks like such a peaceful yet eerily quiet and isolated place. I have never watched Glee and didn't know who she was but she seemed like a beautiful young woman. I hope her sweet little boy is ok.

You never go swimming off a boat unless it is anchored!! Soo stupid of her to be out there w/ no other adult and only her little boy!

A tremendous video done in the inimitable Scott Michaels' style. How sad that such natural beauty would be associated with a tragic death. Thank you Scott for investing your time and resources to produce such a thoughtful and informative video. Stay safe and be well.

Hi l’m watching this from Arlington Tx. I grew up in Piru, we used to walk across the bridge everyday there was only 2 houses ours and my Uncles now my cousin built his home next to ours. From what l know she rented the boat for 3 hrs. And when she didn’t return the employees went to look for them they found her son asleep on the boat and he said his Mama went in the water and didn’t come up. So sad. We would always go fishing there and my Dad and 2 Brothers work there part time back in the day. Thank you so much for this.

Sad ending to such a beautiful woman and wonderful mother. Her last moments were saving her little boy's life. May she Rest In Peace. Praying for those that loved her.

This is so awful. Back in the 90s a friend’s nephew jumped off a bridge into the Cuyahoga River, about 50 feet. It was early spring and he became stuck in the sludge and never surfaced until his body came up weeks later.
