To wear crossed anchors takes a very special man, one who lives at sea and not on the land . He stands before you in proper naval appearance, yet his face displays the scars of the endurance, his job is that of no other rate. The Navy simply labels him a him a Boatswains Mate. No matter what the elements he faces at sea. If there is a job to be done, and then done it will be. To wear the crossed anchors is an honor to him and nothing take that from him. You'll never meet a man so easy going, or hear such tunes on the pipe he is blowing. Their days may be long and nights may be cold, but they stick out, the young and the old. To wear the crossed anchors is a to me, knowing that I too am a man of the sea. There are no other men that deserve the respect, than those who trod the cold dark deck, so when you see a sailor, look at his sleeve. He may be on liberty, he may on Leave. That sleeve displays the symbol of his rate. You never know he might be a "Boatswains Mate"

My uncle was a BMSN USS Waddell DDG-24 and one time they had a suprised locker inspection and what his CPO found is that my uncle was a crossdressing while he went on liberty they found his wigs and make up and his sexy lingerie he did wear under his uniform. You know the storys about Navy men on ships are true. The Navy will make a Woman out of you.

It was a great way to spend a career. From starting as a non-rate hanging over the side with a chipping hammer, to operating a Landing Craft Utility with a 10 man crew and being trusted to drive a YTB tugboat at NavSta Norfolk, the busiest Naval Base in the world, as a CPO. I don't know what will become of the rate, but I tried to carry on the knowledge that had been passed down to me. Good luck to all of you who wear the crossed anchors!

When i signed up i could choose between submarine culinary arts (did alot of years in fast food), Machinist's Mate, Seamen Apprenticeship, and Boatswain's Mate. I had a feeling this was right for me. Thanks for the post!

Boatswain mates don't get enough credit as they should without them the ship wouldn't even function think about it who would drive it , who would perform the underway replenishment so the ship could get gas , mail and food to feed you ungrateful people , keeping it in "ship shape "and perform amphibious and helicopter operations on the small boys. To the people that say deck department sucks are just weak little boys that can't handle hard work and challenge!

Without the BM's, the Navy comes to a halt.

I did 6 years in the Navy now my son is joining, since he scored a 34 on the ASVAB he gonna be a BM some BM recruiter told him he won't chip and paint the contractors do that! Lol he bout to get a good dose of reality since he too lazy to take classes to read better and retake the ASVAB!

Yes there is. I'm a student in it now. It's a 4 week A school to get us introduced to everything before we go to the fleet.

Earned my anchors on USS Forrestal CV-59, drove, replenished, swept, swapped, stood many watches, made friends and enemies, wouldn't have traded any of my experience, was a hard but rewarding time, now to all U new FNG's, do what's excepted of U, follow your last order first and don't piss off the E 8, get your anchors or strike out into a new rate ASAP. Earned mine in the submarine navy uss orion AS-18, We only went to sea maybe twice a year, bubbleheads really appreciated us for what we did, while stationed in Lamaddelena Italy some of us were given the honor of a cruise on board a fast attack on a training mission, I didn't go, too scared.

@@Alvy.07, sorry it's taken so long to get back to U, I was with ACU-5 out of Camp Pendleton, was a loadmaster on an LCAC.so supporting the Marines in amphibious operations on my deployments earned me the FMF designator.

I leave in April too and going in as a BM. thanks soo much for this!

Its unfortunate the too many young people consider themselves too good to do such work....i NEVER did. After I served as a volunteer aboard a ship from Denmark and helping the cadets scrub the deck, take out the garbarge and other shipboard work, that was what caused me to want to join the Navy, to serve my country, to ask not what my country can do for me, but what i can do for my country...Even Gen. Powell said there is nothing wrong with doing a hard day's work no matter what you're doing.

Not at all you will see. I made BM3, it is hard work but your expected to be an MMA, Drive small craft, know the QM's job, you will be a part of a DC repar locker, at times you could be a GM, thats the hardest part of the job you could be thrown into many roles in the navy, to many to mention. For me that was the most challenging. Yes we do work our balls off, no question, but you must be prepared to assume any role at any time that is required of you. I scored a 93 in the asvab test, went to an A school, they breached the contract and I chose to be a BM. If i had to do it over, I would have been a lifer. I served from 87-91 things may have changed.

The Mate using the call appears not to have tuned his call. The bowl wasn't collapsed, the pee wasn't in line with the bowl and I doubt that the bowl was primed wit beeswax. I say this because of the whisping in the higher tones. Boatswain CWO2 (Retired).

Oh, and I'm starting as a BM3 since i went to college

Ok all you watching this Video and think you are going into the Navy from Boot Camp as a Boatswain Mate...sorry to disappoint you but you don't get the designation of "BM" because as far as I know the only way to be designated BM...is by working in Deck and what we call "Striking" for the rate. You were probably told from your recruiter that you would go into the Navy "if not guaranteed" an "A" school that you would go into the Seamanship program which means if going to a ship you would be in Deck Department but you WON'T be designated BM. You will have to work for that Honor I am happy to say. I was both a Navy Recruiter..though some years ago and I retired BMC(SW) after 24 years of service so, unless you were lied to and I would go back and ask your recruiter what are the steps in becoming designated BM...you are going into the Seaman Ship Program as an "SR, SA or SN" and strike out or strike for Boatswain Mate. Oh and if you are weak of mind and weak of strength...strike out of Deck...there is no room for you...

As a former bm2, I recall the disrespect me and my fellow bm's received, being called a "deck ape" was something I personally hated, and I'm sure it still occurs today.

Deck apes are not the only rating with nick names. I was a SFM and worked in the ship fitters shop. Because were responsible for all the piping and plumbing, when a sitter got clogged up, we had to fix it. Therefore we were called turd chasers. Ask any current or former sailor what hospital corpsmen are referred to and what Quarter Masters (QM) means.

if you are, than how do you have access to the internet? I didn't have access when I was in boot camp in 2002. And if you are in school, its called C school, or seaman's school where you learn how to tye knots and line handling...Bosun mate is a job you learn OTJ.

While I have great respect for you old salts, those Bosun's in the shitty looking coveralls were not slacking off. they were enjoying their lunch meal. I wanted real Bosun mates who looked like they were had been working so they looked believable. I was lucky to get to interview them on camera. I did not want Bosun mates that were all clean looking and not had been working. I strive to portray the truth, not propaganda.

Jennifer Glenn im currenly a BMSN in the navy. so the differents is you are going to be apart of the deck department. which would make you a deck seaman and we do all the work. once we make E-4 or BM3 we mostly will supervise and learn management skills needed for each evolution.

You can work in the office if you play your cards right. Dont be an e4 supervisor. You still have to work. E6 shouldnt be afraid to work in deck.

well good luck dude because I joined when I already had a BA degree and couldnt get a job just because I lacked experience and or couldn't fill a raciaL quota...now after serving my country and having tons of experience, im STILL asked that by employers and they still deny my employment.. sorry to hear that. sounds like a really bad command. there is someone you can complain to. I hope you get a much better command. When my grandmother died, I was told right away.My only gripe was the fact that my supervisor was sexually6 harrassing me by calling me a fag and lying on my evals about what a poor worker I suposedly was. On my next command, they gave me a Navy Achievement Medal because they recognised my hard work that I did. The Navy in general is not a bad career.

well i know what its like not to ahve the upper chain of command not listen or take complaints seriously. When I was in Afghanistan last year, an Army SSGT was calling me gay just for being in the Navy because he believed our bellbottom service dress uniforms somehow were gay. or made us that way. He said these comments in front of an Army Colenol who was in the office and somehow never heard them...and yet hte liberal media thinks there has been no problems ever since the repeal of dont ask...

awe..sounds like someone just doesn';t like doing a little hard work. maybe they should permamantly reassign you to work in the galley for the next three years so you can be up to armpits in subs in the deep sink...hey i'll buy you the worlds smallest violin to play for you while youre doing your hard work for the next three years.

You do a lot of chipping and painting. CONSTANTLY. You don't show anyone hanging over the side, hanging from King Posts. You don't also address the bullying that goes on in Deck Dept. How uniform items are stolen, how advancement is denied to deserving sailors. How junior petty officers are treated like overpaid non-rates. Oh yeah and being a BM does not translate to the outside world at all. You become a Boatswain's Mate 2 ways...#1 you choose to not go to an A-School. But you still have to take an exam to make the rate the E-4 exam. But when i was in you sign your name and you passed. OR you fail your A-school and get sent to fleet. They will put you in Deck Dept. There it will be very difficult to get into any other rate and you will basically be forced to take the BM3 Exam. And then the bullying games get worse as the y try to bust you back down to Non-Rate. After 4 YEARS you just feel relieved when your contract ends.

Based on what you said Nick, you were probably a shitbag in the fleet. BM translates directly to the merchant marine and Military Sealift Command...where unlicensed (non-officers) in the deck dept can make $80,000 a year and get their own cabins! Do better research, junior...

Uniform items stolen and sailors subjected to weekly seabag inspections, DC stations messed with so the DCPO will get busted. Coursework for advancement conveniently thrown away and never submitted to the member's service record. Constantly given the midwatch. Constantly placed on side cleaners where the people in charge walk away with the member over the side. Dunking the member into the sea with haphazardly tied ropes for both safety and bos'n chair/stage. Evals given progress toward- that's stealing money. Maybe you were the one doing that crap and thought it was funny huh??
