Navigating the Tidal Rapids of BC's Inside Passage on a Small Sailboat | A&J Sailing S2Ep.10

Sailing North along British Columbia's incredible Inside Passage, some of the best cruising grounds in the world lie just beyond a series of challenging tidal passes.. the Discovery Islands are a labyrinth of beautiful forested islands, inlets and anchorages between Vancouver Island and the BC mainland coast that are surrounded by treacherous tidal passes that make sailing here difficult. The strong tidal currents create rapids and whirlpools that can be prrretty scary if you don't time the tide right.
This week we navigate our small sailboat & floating home thru the last of these treacherous rapids on our way to the incredible cruising grounds of the Northern BC Coast

    This week we navigate the last of the tidal passages of the Discovery islands, ending with Whirlpool rapids! Although cruising guides and Navionic's notes indicate that it is possible to ride this rapid at anytime, we discovered that is indeed not the case! Stoked to be on the other side of the gateway to the beautiful Broughton Archipelago! Thanks for being here folks :)

    Living in Juneau, Alaska and just stumbled on your channel. Nice episode and yes, those rapids can be quite fun! I've been down the inside passage twice as crew and I've boated here for 33 years. I currently own a nicely restored Catalina 27 and am retired so I visit a lot of places around Juneau. Looks like you're on a Catalina 30, which is a great little boat and pretty fast for their size! Lots of space for a 30' boat! I'll subscribe to your channel in a minute and I also have a channel under my name, Wade Rogers, with a lot of drone videos and some sailing vids as well.

    Ahoy, that’s awesome! We love hearing from other folks out sailing this coast on similar boats, there’s a pretty great community of us out here! I bet you have heaps of information about your area you could share, we’re excited to make it up there & check it all out! Yes we have a Cat 30 tall rig, she’s pretty sporty and we enjoy how spacious it feels! We’ll sub & check out the footage on your channel as well! So glad you found us ☺️

    @@AllisonandJamesSailing Thanks for the reply! Yeah, my Catalina 27 made it all the way from the California factory to Juneau Alaska in 1977, believe it or not! Must have been quite the adventure! I've owned it for 12 years now but it's the 2nd smallest sailboat I've sailed (I've crewed on 50' monohulls and 38' catamarans, etc). Hopefully we can meet up when you make it this far. My boat has some custom interior features that make it more like a larger boat, like a slide out cutting board, slide out cabinet drawers, two bunk extensions, a linear custom galley, a half enclosed cockpit, etc. I've enjoyed your vids so far, especially the info about the tides and how they come and go in those areas, the drone footage, and the high production value (I started doing video work in high school in the late 1970's 'back in the day'). That high prod value is what keeps me watching someone's channel. See you on the next video!

    We haven't done a video dedicated to anchoring per say, but we do talk a great deal about it in most of our videos since it's definitely the most difficult aspect of cruising in these parts! Some examples.. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pIpnrsZ8eaTVqqQ.html In this video (towards the end) we chat in depth about anchoring in uncharted areas using alternative anchoring techniques. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gp-Xxrd6mru_haw.html This video we set up a 'fishermans mooring' to overnight in a deep fjord kzread.info/dash/bejne/k4url9aLqNbSk7g.html In this one we 'unsnag' our anchor at the head of a remote inlet.. Hope those are helpful, cheers!

    I was wondering a couple of things about your boat. We have the same boat type, and I was curious if you found the 16hp motor adequate to navigate the currents where you've been? Also as I've been thinking of replacing my engine due to an untimely watery death of the Universal M-25XP , and would like to know what type of transmission you have and if it is 2.5:1 or 2:1? Also the prop size and pitch? I know its a tall order and frankly some of those things are hard to find while in the water(the prop). Though if you know any of it, or all of it, I'd love to know so my boat can move again. I am looking at the Nanni 14.5 hp 2 cylinder.

  • @AllisonandJamesSailing

    @AllisonandJamesSailing

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Allyn, we have a beta-marine 14hp coupled with a ZF 10M transmission that has a reduction ratio of 2.05:1. Not sure about the prop size or pitch off the top of my head but it’s a 2 blade prop. We’ve never had issues navigating the current, the trip up bute inlet we had 2knts against us and we’re still able to make 3knt/hr SOG at 1800rmp. I sent you a message on FB messenger that’s a bit more descriptive. Best of luck with you project and I’m sorry to hear about the untimely death of your M-25xp
