Navigating Hateful Comments: Tale of an Ugly Wartortle

Фильм және анимация

Art and social media don't always mix well. Using these platforms can be a great way to get your work out in the world, but it can also come with a lot of negativity.
In this video I'll go through some of the comments I received on one of my latest pieces and discuss how I approach them and how I try to interact with people online to improve my work.
P.S. Although all comments in this video are real, I have cherry picked them to make a point. the vast majority of the communities I interacted with were very pleasant and helpful, which ultimately resulted in a better final piece.

I liked the evolution of the design. A friend of mine who worked on the detective Pikachu movie told me some interesting wisdom, that "Appeal, Environment, Intention and Character" is important to a design which is funny cuz we kinda learnt that when we were at university years and years ago XD but It does ring true tho.

it's ashame that wartortle got such a... reaction from people, after all the work you put into it. however, i'm glad you turned this around into a learning experience, not just for yourself, but for us all! that being said, the new design is awesome! looks a lot more beastial, which is great for realistic pokemon! thanks you for all your hard work, i love watching your process in blender, and i love pokemon so hey win-win! :D

Hehe, it's not always easy being told your two months worth of work isn't enough, but I definitely feel the extra time was worth it. Plenty more Pokemon stuff still to come :D

There is an old saying for giving feedback that goes Kiss - Kill - Kiss Positive comment leading into the negative issue and then another positive comment with suggestions or looking at other aspects with a positive eye.

Nice. This sounds really similar to the "compliment sandwich". Which again is - something positive on the bottom, the critique in the middle, and another compliment on top. It's a very effective method for both encouraging what's working and helping fix any issues.

Hey there Jamie! Awesome work on your Wartortle! The new face pulled it right out of the uncanny valley. I'm really envious of your texture work btw. I wish I could sustain an realistic artstil like that, but I'm to impatient XD I also love how you teach some lessons here about feedback. To filter out information and not taking things personal is not easy in the creative area. It's a pretty similar take how studios manage their feedback. Sometimes it looks like this as an example: - Say what you like or love about it - Say what was unclear or confusing about it (not what is bad) - Make a suggestion how to make it clearer / stronger I'm curious how you will improve over the next year! Keep it going like that and you rock your next challenges with ease 👍

Thanks heaps CG ;) You're quite right on the texturing - it's mostly about patience. Realism is largely just building up layer after layer of detail. Base colours, scales, dirt, algae, sweat and all the various bumps and roughnesses that go with each. It's time consuming. Although Substance Painter really does speed it up tons. Almost all of the feedback strategies involve giving some sort of compliment as part of feedback. It's just really effective. And I think you can always find *something* nice to say. Even if it's "Wow, this is the first time you've tried that? That's really good!".

Thanks heaps Manila. There were certainly a handful of comments that were just not very nice. But there were mostly comments that were trying their best to be helpful and it’s worth our time learning to interpret those 😊

A great improvement! Although If I can provide my own feedback as an artist, I think a useful improvement in all of your work is applying more of the function over form rule. In your wartortle, the shell part around the shoulder would prevent him from putting his arm above his head. The 2D concept you are working from dealt with this issue by making a gap between the front and back shell at the shoulder joint. There is also no earholes on the ears. Another common improvement that could me made is showing less "white" of the eye. If you look at your pet, you'll notice its pretty rare to any white in their eyes, because humans are the only species with obviously visible eye whites. So giving your pokemon human eyes might make them look a bit uncanny. So my main encouragement would be to spend more time on underlying anatomy of the models - making sure to look at real-world animals and how their bodies are constructed (since pokemon are based off real animals). Your Finer details are perfect as they are, so no need for improvement there! :)

Yeah I completely agree. In this case I chose to follow the original game model design, which has the shell go all the way around. It's only once I've started animating him I've realised just how restricting it is. Fortunately for the animation I'm planning he'll mostly be sitting around a campfire. But if I ever want him to do battle I think I'm going to have to revise how the shell connects.

Hello there Jamie, I want to ask your opinion about using multires to bake out wrinkle map based on Blender Studio realistic human workflow. If you have the time or interested, it will help me a lot to talk with someone more experienced like you.
