All depends on your profession. I dropped out of college back in 2015 and never went back. I was going for Network & System Administration at the time. It gotten way too experience plus i wasn't learning anything sittng in a classroom. I felt i learned best on my own. I built my first server homlab back in 2013 that ran Windows 2008R2 and Ubuntu Server 10 way back then. Now i work with Linux on the job today with no degree or certifications. I'm already half way in-between a Sysadmin and a Deskside Technician but my goal is move more towards Cloud. Without my homelab, i probably wouldn't be working in IT today which is how i developed my practical hands on experience and skill sets.

In america, college isnt needed in order to achieve a college grad income. This is something many immigrants dont realize when they come to america for school. Still, i wouldnt shout down someone who went for a formal education, college etc. i built nice relationships in college, but everything else was a waste of time. What i learned there i couldve learned on my on (mainly after the internet boom). I think if u plan to be an emplyee, then the degree may be helpful. If u want to be a boss, it isnt. To become a Boss, i just had to learn how to network. My social skills took me further than my sat score

Major Key for college grad and tech enthusiast you definity can use those capstone project and labs youve done in a interview. I used a couple of my projects and a let me explain what I did to justify why that tool etc is on my resume....worse thing you can do is put wireshark for example on your resume and they ask you...WHAT IS A PCAP? I've never pull that on the job but I did in a lab and I explained why that information is useful. Who care if you did it once.

I guess people rather stay at the warehouse for 10 years. And don’t get me started on the young people, they always end up getting fired for stealing or just goofing around. Should I drop these certs and do something else or do you guys think I should get them. I haven't taken any cybersecurity courses yet but was able to pass the technical interview due to me doing research and studying on my own time. I am also in a it club and was able to talk about my competitions I have went to dealing with networking and security. My question is should I be going for different certifications so I could stand out more since I already landed an internship btw I graduate in December 2024. I really just want to be the best candidate for a company so I can get an offer before I graduate or possibly get an offer for the company that am going to intern for they said they are looking to hire post grad.

Usually Cloud and DevOps is not entry-level unless you are trying to find a Cloud Support role. A Cloud Engineer or DevOps Engineer often comes from a Sysadmin background as you are doing System Administration tasks in the cloud. You have to know a LOT of skills, From Linux, Networking, Databases, Security, Programming, Scripting, Automation, knowledge in Databases, Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform, Configuration management tools like Ansible, Kubernetes and Containers, Knowledge in building pipeline. This is some petty hard core stuff. Not something you can learn over night. I use Ansible and the SaltStack in my role as both a Sr. Desktop Support Tech and RHEL Linux Admin. I also use Bash and Powershell which are all transferable skill sets.

@@TechTualChatter Depending on the role. But I'm talking about building foundational knowledge such as Linux, Scripting, Networking etc which is needed to work in a Cloud Engineer role. It can take some time to build up those skills esp if some one never worked with Linux before or Scripting which all IaC stuff is done through a Linux Terminal.

I disagree with this glorification of no degree jobs. Do you know how many people are competing with you with degrees, experience and certifications? Tons! Certifications are not enough. I started at a CC than went to my state university for Computer Engineering for free as a state resident. I graduated with projects and a ton of certifications. If college is too costly, go to a community college or a public university. Stop going to these private schools and these shitty schools like WGU. 😂😂😂😂

@@TechTualChatter let me guess you attended WGU? WGU does not provide a real college education. It is more of trade school at college prices. All the tech programs that are taught at WGU can be done for free at a local bootcamp or community college. In 10 years or so, there will be people coming out the wood work talking about how WGU is scam. I know they push their students to create youtube accounts to market the school. Also, they wanted me to work for them and I flatly declined.
