I been in IT since 1999 when you were considered lame or a nerd if you was working in Tech, especially as a black guy. Now all the influx of people that’s trying to get into it (thanks to social media) it’s almost like selling a dream. We’re in times of instant gratification. People thinking they’re going to get a few entry level certs and then get a 6 figure job with no experience is comical at best😂

That’s crazy people would think you’re “lame” for being in a technical field, bc where I’m from black people who chose to be in IT was very much highly regarded due to the complexity and sort of mystique that came with being technical. And I graduated In 2000. You sure your career choice was the only reason people would have thought you were lame?

Don’t blame them. Blame the dream a lot of these workshops give them. A lot of these folks pay 1500 for a starter course some company sells and they tell a lot of these ppl they can make $120000 startin out. $120+ a year startin out with no experience or degree is impossible. Even with a cert here and there

I have been working in the helpdesk for 2 years and have the A+, Net+, Sec+, Server+, Linux+, CySA+, and Pentest+. I only got invited to interview at 1 company for a cybersecurity job all 2023... mind you I literally had the job offer verbally until they decided to go with an internal employee at the very last minute. I won't lie I wanted to give up chasing the dream after that heartbreak but I'm still just doing my thing. I'm in WGU now for my master's in Cybersecurity. I will continue to keep learning despite being stuck at a dead-end helpdesk job. Hopefully, I get my chance to do something more someday!

It is possible to get the certs in 90 days if you dont have a life, job, or family...120 to 180 days (4 to 6 months) is more doable...but that isnt including building a portfolio or the job search. If starting from scratch, at least expect 6 months to a year to get a new job. I am in IT as a Web Developer...if I had 90 days I would honestly get the Sec+ and the AZ-500 and niche down to cloud security.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from my homework, I think someone new to IT needs a good foundational class before even considering cybersecurity. For me, I decided to start the Google IT support certificate. At $49 a month, I see it as a minimally risky investment, unlike college or a boot camp. Later, I can decide what licenses to pursue if i stay in this field. I would appreciate constructive feedback from IT veterans.

Y’all never off any solutions without us having to dig through yalls page and watch a bunch of videos. If certifications isn’t the way what is? A degree? Labs? What? All I hear is yall constantly telling us what is misinformation but do not follow up with the correct path. It suck knowing yalls target audience is black. Every industry I’ve been in from insurance to trucking everytime I watch or listen to our kind I find their objective is to deter and confuse people. How about you guys provide the solution and maybe we would know these people are lying.

I can understand the frustration and I 100% agree. The thing about it is that everyone’s path is different so there’s no one way to come in. Some people break into tech in 90 days but that just isn’t gonna be the case for the majority of people. From my point of view I think those who are already in tech don’t want those trying to break in to “cheat” their way cause in most cases it will always come back to hurt you. There will be many gaps in your knowledge and fundamentals of IT.

It’s not about the carts and degrees… do you have communication skills? Can you answer and phone and talk to someone without sounding illiterate? Can you build relationships with people? Do you Have experience working with and staying with a company for 3/4 years? … those are things employers are looking for as well.. and they might consider someone with those things over someone with degree and certs. I got my degree and Sec+, doing just fine working my way up doing helpdesk and beginning to lean more towards a security role. If you're not going to put effort into marketing yourself tho, no one will care about you.
